Great lease opportunity at HVF for the summer and beyond:
Cash is a retired Western Pleasure show horse. He is calm, quiet and easy going. Cash's owner is unable to ride on a regular basis and is interested in finding an individual who wishes to do a partial (flexible) lease to ride Cash.
Cash must remain at Hollow Valley Farm; we have a large outdoor grass arena with poles, cavaletti and dressage markers, fields for hacking around, and space in the tack room for your gear.
The ideal leaser is an experienced, kind rider who is looking for a strictly pleasure horse to enjoy several times per week. Cash can ride English or Western. Lessons are available to help establish a relationship with Cash. This is a great opportunity to ride a really sweet horse in a friendly, supportive environment at a private farm. Leaser must have riding and horse handling experience. Contact the farm page for pricing info.

I have a gelding available for partial lease at Hollow Valley Farm near State College. He is 16 years old and coming back into work after a few years of semi-retirement. "Reese" is a beautiful mover with dressage and fox-hunting experience. We are looking for a responsible, intermediate adult rider with references who is willing to follow a back-to-work program for Reese.
HVF is a small farm with an emphasis on holistic training. Please PM me if you'd like more info!

I love groundwork in its many forms: lunging, rope halter work, free lunging, long lining. All of these practices are excellent training tools, and, when used effectively, translate to your riding practice.

If winter is putting the squeeze on your riding game, or you want to improve your relationship with your horse, try some groundwork.

(Idk if it also improves human relationships, but I definitely used to lunge the neighbor girl when we would play make-believe-horses. I promise she was in on it, too.)

It's no simple task to make wellness and feeding decisions for your horse, and I applaud all of my horse friends who are navigating winter with their horse's well-being and happiness as a priority. Keep on trusting your intuition and believing in your horse's natural ability to thrive in all four seasons.

Whether you blanket or not, train all year or take the winter off, use metal shoes, hoof boots or no shoes at all: you are doing the good work of caring for an animal that relies on you.

Horse people are my favorite people. πŸ’œ

aka Bivvers is loving the fall weather (and so am I). We are really proud of this sweet mare, who is proving herself quite a brave and steady girl.

Thanks to for helping me bring Bivvers along, and to for being able to fix literally everything on the farm and for playing ring crew with me.

This is a summer of many improvements at the farm. New fencing, barn renovations that added 2 large run-in shelters, an awesome new boarder, an expanded jump field, and more time spent riding with friends. Arena footing *might* happen this year🀞🏻🀞🏻.
Our village is growing, and we are thankful for everyone who continues to cheer us on and lend a hand.

We had an amazing time hosting a horsemanship workshop for the kids of the Youth Center. We talked about safety, calm energy, and motivation. Disco got to show off his stuff in a free-lunging demo, and wow'ed the crowd. Such a special day. πŸ’–

We started the plot for our today. This is similar to raised beds, but requires no framing.

My inner nature nerd is pretty excited about this process. Hopefully, we have a decent first yield. Updates to come (with Rubie the camo-doggie supervising, of course).

Putting in the groundwork basics with the sensitive and thoughtful Miss Bivvers. We are working on using increasingly subtle cues for transitions. Under saddle is coming along, too! Love this mare.

is starting some conditioning work after a cold winter. Like all things with horses, this is a gradual process. I've consistently used reward-based training (positive reinforcement) throughout the winter when riding was limited, and it's paying off now. I use pressure and release, too (negative reinforcement), and I find value in both methods. You can reward with food, comfort (rest, and the release of pressure), and companionship (the herd). Finding the right rewards to motivate your horse, and using them with good timing, is key to building a great partnership. Happy almost-spring!!
