Shorty isn’t sure what to do with all the attention of being an only horse. The vet assured us that, despite not having another horse, he will likely do fine as he is still part of a familiar herd. He is now king of the goats.

If we happen to find the perfect fit for our farm, we may give him a friend. Until then, his old self can carry my old self at an amiable amble around the farm.

Yesterday I didn’t want to be a farm girl. I didn’t want to look at the barn, feed any of the animals, or go to the garden. I wanted to pretend like I lived somewhere else.

Because yesterday was hard. We had to say goodbye forever to Tango, our kind and gentle horse.

He taught our girls how to ride, never once took a misstep on purpose, had infinite patience and is so deeply loved.

We knew this day would come. You see, we were blessed with Tango about 8 years ago, and he was already in his mid-twenties. His teeth weren’t great, but soaking his grain was a small price to pay for his wisdom and steadfastness.

As with all herds, we had a clear pecking order, and Tango was a benevolent leader. Yesterday no one left the barn, because he wasn’t there to lead them out to the pasture.

There is an emptiness here, as he filled such a great role on our farm. Tango-Bango was the first to gallop up for dinner, kept any rude and pushy goats in check with a swish of his tail, and always requested a belly scratch after a meal.

Shorty, his herd mate for the last 15 years stood at the gate and called for him. All day.

We are thankful his death was gentle. There was no prolonged, intervention-ridden battle with illness. Tango went like he did everything else we asked of him- willingly and with ease.

Tango colicked, as older horses are more prone to do. Our trusted vet, who has treated him for many years, said it was time.

We could have thrown him in a trailer, hauled him to state, tubed him, ran IV lines, the works. Left him in a strange facility with strangers caring for him. She didn’t think it would save him.

Instead, he was laid to rest, peacefully in his pasture, buried under dappled sunlight from tall pine trees, near Sugar and Patches, horses that lived on this farm many years ago.

I am so thankful we had Tango in our lives. Even if it was only for 8 short years.

The barn is going to feel empty for a long time.
