Retrieving drills take on new meaning as fall gets closer!
Raven loves nothing more than retrieving.
On this Saturday, May 11th from 11am to 1pm, I will be participating in a local author book signing in New London. I would love to meet and chat with you about my 3 books, and 4th book, Country Journal and Old Man’s Musings, due to be released this fall.
Hope to meet and see you there!
After 50 years of raising gun dog puppies, we have decided to retired from breeding cockers this year. Thank you for your interest in our kennel and to past owners of Eau Pleine shorthairs and cockers, thank you for your outstanding patronage.
Eau Pleine Millie getting things done in the grouse woods!
And an update from Marty in Antigo on his boy Amos.
“Hey Ken, Amos is about 2 1/2 now and thought I would drop a line with a report. You know how much I liked him from the first day in the woods retrieving wood ducks at 5 months. The report today is that nothing has changed. He is still and absolute pleasure to own and hunt. Not just as a bird dog but everything from the couch to the field and everything in between. Hot temps today but he hunted his butt off and brought back two for me. Now he is in his spot on the couch enjoying some well earned rest. ND in a couple week for his first pheasant hunt. Thinking he will do very well. Marty/Antigo”
One of this year’s Eau Pleine cocker pups named Millie, getting it done duck hunting in western WI. Her folks said, “She loves to retrieve! And crazy prey drive!!”
Check out what Alaskan Eau Pleine Mojo did. Three species of grouse in one hunt. Ruffed, Spruce and Sharptail. Way to go Mojo!
Another generation taking on daily chore responsibilities at the kennel. Two months on the job and doing great jobs!

KENNEL NEWS
Do you want to discover the magic of owning a field bred English Cocker Spaniel? Here’s your chance to bring one into your life. All but two male puppies from our 2023 litter left our kennel this past weekend. Four of five sold have gone to repeat owners of Eau Pleine cockers.
As you can see on the accompanying certified pedigree, these pups are well bred with a long lineage of proven and tested cockers. Their mother’s father, Fallen Wings Buster of Eau Pleine, graced our kennel for twelve and a half years, and produced scores of outstanding cockers - for the field and as family members. Their father, Eau Pleine Raven Prince of Gates is the grandson of Mallowdale XFactor, winner of the 2015 National Cocker Championship in England. Raven’s mother, Mallowdale Bush, was imported by Diane and John Rex Gates of Tennessee.
But these pups will speak for themselves as they develop into outstanding companions at home and the field. Check out the accompanying photos of their older brother from our 2021 litter.
If you are interested in one of these solid black pups, call 715-218-1566 or e-mail [email protected]. Full price is $1,000. Pick up at the kennel only.

“Hey Ken, just dropping a line to let u know that my Amos dog from u is an absolute pleasure in every way. I could go on and on but we will just say he’s a keeper and then some. Couple recent pics and a trail cam clip that caught us on a wood duck hunt.”

The sire, Raven, is the grandson of Mallowdale X Factor, A Field Trial Champion who won the 2015 Cocker Championship in England. The mother is our Eau Pleine Mitzie.

March 13th and no end in sight for cold and snow. Could the month “leave like a lamb”?
Boy, Mitzie sure looks like her daddy, Buster.
This is our "Raven", grandson of Mallowdale X Factor.
Winter is here at the kennel for sure!

With the recent loss of our beloved Buster, having his daughter Mitzie sure helps ease the pain.
It’s official, says Susan Trosvig, owner of Eau Pleine’s Sweet Greta - now with an AKC Tracking Title Certification. Congratulations Susan and Greta!
THE FINAL RUN
On Sunday, he hunted woodcock for an hour with us one last time. On Monday, the last day of the season, he remained in the truck while we hunted with his daughter. He took one last lap - the final run around our field by the creek that evening. He collapsed from exhaustion 100 yards from the house. We rested for a while and he climbed the front stairs of the house. On Tuesday evening, he napped on my lap one last time. He fell asleep forever on the floor by my side an hour later. My friend and constant companion for the past twelve and a half years, Buster, is gone. Please don't despair, but join me in celebrating his twelve trips around the sun.
From the day we brought him home from Schroeder’s Fallen Wings Kennel, my wife and I knew we had one special dog. She cuddled him in her lap and declared English Cockers were perfect lap dogs compared to our kennel full of sixty-pound German Shorthairs. That fall he traveled with me to Saskatchewan, followed by many years to North Dakota, northern Wisconsin grouse camps and of course just about everywhere else in our home state. Over the years woodcock, ruffed grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasants, sharptail grouse, quail, ducks and geese all met their match in Buster. I’ll never forget the time he dove underwater to retrieve a wounded wood duck.
His exploits over the years gained him a bit of notoriety in my weekly outdoor newspaper column and entries on my kennel’s Facebook account. He even earned a chapter in my book, Wisconsin Bird Hunting Tales. And he became the inspiration for a novel I am currently completing entitled Chequamegon, Moon River - a northern Wisconsin murder mystery. It’s a story of a boy, his cocker spaniel dog, coming of age and falling in love.
Over the years, Buster sired over sixty pups, much to the delight of over sixty new owners. His offspring made their way as far as Alaska, Tennessee, Georgia, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, South Dakota and Nebraska. Much to my delight and comfort, three of Buster’s daughters remain with us and God willing, two will carry his bloodline into the future.
I buried Buster yesterday down by the creek. Under the shadow of a pair of walnut trees that sprung up from seeds I planted years ago. Near a “johnny house” that currently houses 19 bobwhite quail - that sing every day for others of their kind released in the training field. Buried next to our female cocker Belle, who passed last year. And a stone’s throw from the creek that bisects our forty acres.
When I die in my 99th year, I will have left instructions for my family to spread my ashes over Buster’s grave. It’ll be a fine place to spend eternity with my friend and constant companion, Buster - on the final run
Our captive covey of quail make for good training for our bird dogs and grandkids alike. Here No. 1 granddaughter Peyton handles and releases another quail for the dogs to locate later.
Old-timers Finn and Buster. Finn enjoying early November warmth and Buster watching the sky for geese.
From another satisfied Eau Pleine Cocker owner;
Hi Ken. Just wanted to let you know that Greta got her tracking title today. She was awesome! She’s a very enthusiastic tracker. Hope you are well.
Sunset over the kennel tonight.

Amos is a pup I sold earlier this year. At 15 weeks old he’s showing great promise. From our Raven x Cassie litter. Video by his new owner Marty Benes.
Winter routine includes daily runs in the exercise area while I clean the runs, shovel snow. Here the Cockers take their turn.
7 weeks old today. By next weekend they'll all be placed in their new homes. Gone will be their pleasant puppy chatter and constant wagging tails. Blessed to be sharing that with the new owners soon!
The cocker gang is past the weaning stage and are on their own now. Mother Bingo is enjoying her new found freedom. Imagine these guys wanting a drink from mom? 5 weeks is long enough!
Week 3. The weaning process begins later this week with the introduction of soft, warm "mush" dog food. Mother gets daily breaks from pups. By week 5, they should be about done with mom. Yesterday, they played in the pen while their whelping box got cleaned. Enjoy the video!
Two of the newest additions to our kennel. "Magic" and "Cassy". Magic is an Aspen Thicket GSP and Cassy is one of our home grown field bred English Cockers. A romp in the snow this morning, a scene that may be short lived as spring is knocking at our door, the snow disappears and our back 40 training field reappears.
