Thank you all for your prayers for Maxwell. I took him to the vet and he has a slight amount of fluid in his lungs. (pulmonary edema). No abdominal fluid thankfully and liver and kidneys look good. Follow up visit next week.

The conflict between humans and animals is at the centre of today’s celebration of World Animal Day with the theme: “shared planet” — remembering that humans aren’t the only ones relying on earth for life.

Poaching and snaring happens largely out of poverty, with people struggling to feed themselves resorting to trapping animals for meat or illegal trade. Khanyisa was caught in a snare intended for large game, laid illegally by poachers. It almost ended her life.

As much as communities face challenges in life, and especially in third world countries like South Africa, we have to remember the place of animals on earth too.

Today and every day we honour our elephants and all the wildlife we share our home with here.
