This week the Riverside County Animal Services had a special transport with Wings or Rescue. 38 dogs flew out to various states to find their furever home. Among the 38, 2 were our longest stay residents, Jupiter and Cosette.

We are always grateful to work with partners who help us make space in our shelters. We are so excited to see these pets leave our shelter system and find their way to loving homes.

Great job everyone who helped find them their new home! To learn how you can help, visit https://rcdas.org

A team of six Riverside County animal control officers (ACO) deployed to Los Angeles in support of the Palisades fire emergency response from January 16th-25th.

Riverside County was the first operational area in the state to respond to the request for assistance and extend an offer of support to the City of Los Angeles under California’s Emergency Management Mutual Aid (EMMA) system. The team was tasked on January 15th, giving them less than 16 hours’ notice to prepare and depart. Once on scene, the ACOs immediately coordinated with several agencies and began responding to the public’s calls for help evacuating, searching and caring for lost or injured pets.

Working alongside other animal control agencies, the team responded to an estimated 180 calls and helped over 100 animals. Originally, the team was tasked to stay for five days but their presence was crucial, and the assignment was extended an additional four days.

“A lot of us have experience evacuating horses and livestock during fires and are familiar with going into unsafe areas to try and help animals who have no one else to turn to,” said Lieutenant of Field Services Kyle Stephens. “Seeing all the devastation and loss of infrastructure was really unbelievable, but we knew our efforts could bring some comfort to people who lost so much.”

The Riverside team consisted of Lt. Kyle Stephens, Officer Michael Cox, Officer Jennifer Setler, Officer Justin Mays, Officer Mary Salazar and Officer Yesenia Dorado.

Today, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors appointed Mary Martin to take the helm of the Riverside County Department of Animal Services (RCDAS), which has been without a permanent director since September of last year.

In her role as RCDAS Director, Martin will lead a department with a $34 million budget that operates four municipal shelters. Last year, the department received more than 40,000 calls for field service, worked with partners to save more than 20,600 animals, and performed more than 14,000 spay and neuter surgeries.

As RCDAS Director, Martin will directly oversee the scope of work and deliverables by Outcomes for Pets, an outside consulting group. The Outcomes for Pets team will deliver a strategic plan aimed at the following areas: prevention, education, and diversion; safety and humane treatment of pets; positive connections with our communities; a healthy and capable workforce; and meaningful relationships with partners. Martin will also lead the RCDAS team to implement the actions outlined in the strategic plan.

Working in collaboration with RCDAS leadership, the Outcomes for Pets team has already begun work to increase spay/neuter access and pet support promotions, helping more lost pets get reunited with their families, providing additional safe and humane opportunities for pets at risk of euthanasia, expanding dog foster and other lifesaving programs.

Martin’s experience leading municipal animal shelters includes her current role as assistant director with Dallas Animal Services, as well as former leadership roles with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society, and Animal Care Centers of New York City. During her tenure with Maricopa County, Martin took the shelter from an 80% save rate to 96%. In Santa Fe, she took the shelter from a 65% live-release rate to a stable 94%.

What does it mean to be a responsible pet owner?

February marks the start of Responsible Pet Owner Month and Riverside County Animal Services wants to offer these important tips on how to be a responsible pet owner.

Pet owners should care for our pets medical needs by ensuring our pets are microchipped, spayed or neutered, up-to-date on all necessary vaccines, properly groomed, protected against parasites and visit the vet at least once a year for a check up.
Pet owners should also keep their pets healthy and happy with regular exercise, fresh water and food, and love and affection.
There is a call for pet owners to be a good neighbor by picking up after their pet and walking them on a leash with an ID. collar and tag when walking in the community.
