Dec 1 Report— all vanilla to date: 1 pound in condition stage. 22 pounds (what you see here) in sun drying stage. Still many more pounds remaining to be harvested on vines. No flowers to date.

On a side note: residents and visitors are traveling daily
towards the new lava flow of Mauna Loa. A once in a lifetime experience! Be safe and enjoy! 🌺

Vanilla is the only edible fruit of the orchid family, the largest family of flowering plants in the world.
There are over 150 varieties of vanilla plants. Just like grapes that make wine, no two vanilla beans are the same in flavor, aroma, or color.
Less than 1% of vanilla flavor comes from actual vanilla orchids probably because Vanilla is the most labor-intensive of all agricultural products because the entire process of vanilla cultivation, pollination, and harvesting are done by hand.

Vanilla is an orchid. These beautiful flowers bloom for just a few hours in the early morning. If they are not pollinated during that time the will close up and fall off the vine, producing no bean. One pollinated flower produces one beautiful bean!! 🌱
