Flying to visit anyone in Seattle? Have visitors coming from there?
Paws Across Water Hawaii -Pawhi has a big favor to ask. We have crates building up with our good friends and rescue partners that we really need to get back. Crates would be dismantled and zip tied so that they count as one item of baggage- if you are a frequent flier and get free bags great, if not we are glad to pay the fee. Some crates are only 5" away from the airport and ready to go. Others need to have a coordinated pick up in advance of your travel. Please email [email protected] and please share with your traveling friends.

These two wonderful Animal control dogs have been getting intense socialization but are not going to fly with the Paws Across Water Hawaii -Pawhi program to mainland homes. Action 4 Animals has been promoting them but has not had luck with fosters.
Here is some information that might make you decide to give one or both a try.
Oreo and Hana are both young- 7-9 months old. Oreo is black and white and Hana is brown and white. They came from the same household where there were multiple litters of different ages on the same property. They get along well with other dogs (tested with larger/smaller/male & female).
Both are timid around people. Hana initially would stay far back in the kennel or evade eye contact. He now runs up and actively seeks pets. He is learning to walk nicely on a lead and his confidence is building daily. In the play yard he romps well with young obnoxious puppies without being a bully. With larger dogs he yields and is more submissive. He has nice recall and comes right up to everyone in the yard for pets.
He is not resource possessive. He is learning indoor spaces and doorways are good. He can be touched everywhere with no sensitive areas.
He thinks he is a lap dog and is quiet. He will jump gently up and set his paws on your legs.
He should not be an only dog and will eventually need an active human for his forever home.
Oreo is very sweet but takes time to warm up. She wants to sit next to you and be petted in the safety of her kennel. She loves to come out and play gently with puppies and smaller dogs. She does nicely nose to nose with a larger female dog but we have not yet progressed to free play in the yard.
She is not resource possessive. She tolerates hands everywhere as long as you go slowly. She is quiet and does not jump.
She too should not be a solo dog as she is more comfortable with dogs than humans at this point. A stay at home couple with time on their hands could bring her out of her shell.
I am glad to discuss these dogs with potential foster or adoptive homes. [email protected]

This is what the Paws Across Water Hawaii -Pawhi rescues for the next two weeks looks like. A stack of crates and travel bags ready so that the 16 matched (wow) County of Hawaii Animal Control dogs and puppies can make their way to the wonderful mainland rescue partners and their forever homes. This is what the donated crates you give us get used for. This is why when you sign up to be a flier we can get dog (dogs) out.

Please continue to support PAWHI as COH dogs with no other viable home in HI get to leave.
1. Donate your airline approved dog crate- size 300 & 400 please.
2. Donate leash and collar sets - every dog we send has to have one and they never are returned.
3. Donate a pets airline flight fee -$150 per crate
4. Donate a pets health certificate and rabies vaccination - $140 per
5. Sign up to accompany a pet when you fly on Alaska Air to the mainland direct.
6. Offer to bring empty crates back from Seattle.

Donations can be made through the secure Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary web site. Paws Across Water Hawaii -Pawhi is a program of 3RR and your donations can be designated to the dog rescue program.

FLIERS to SEATTLE urgently needed in the next few months. Anyone in Kona who is heading that way or having guests visit from there and flying on Alaska Airlines can be the lifeline to getting the Animal Control shelter pups to the mainland where rescues are waiting to get them into forever homes. The Big Island shelters are filled so this is the only option for dogs not lucky enough to be selected by the wonderful local rescues.
Being a flier is easy to do, we do all the work, you just meet up at the airport during check in and meet the rescue once you land at baggage claim. It's that simple.

Please email [email protected] to sign up or learn more. And do share.

Aloha and Welcome to the new PAWHI page.

I'd like a chance to fill you in on what PAWHI is and what we have been up to in the two years since we formed the program.

PAWHI works under the Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary 501 C 3 umbrella. Founded in January of 2022 the Paws Across Water Hawaii -Pawhi program was created as a way to save the lives of County of Hawaii animal control shelter pets who were not being selected for local placement by Big Island rescues.

The shelter animals are carefully evaluated for behavior to see if they would make an adoptable Aloha pet for one of our mainland rescue partners. The list of rescue partners is below.
Once a shelter pet has been behaviorally evaluated - passes a very detailed series of tests to be sure it is going to thrive - that pet goes into our approved animal file. Mainland rescue partners have specific acceptance criteria. Some are only able to take smaller dogs, some mature, others puppies and some breed restricted. But all must have excellent dog to dog and dog to human behavior.

Then here is where the volunteers come into play. Getting these dogs to mainland rescues requires us to pair them with an Animal Flying Companion (AFC) who is someone that is already flying on Alaska Air (or Hawaiian) to the mainland. We add a dog to their reservation at no cost to the AFC. We accept the dog from the COH shelter in advance and make sure it is ready to fly. This includes the health certificate exam and rabies vaccine. On the day of travel we collect the dog from the shelter or private boarding facility and meet the AFC 2 hrs pre flight to check the Aloha pet in. Once the Aloha pet is checked in the AFC flies as they normally would. Upon landing the AFC heads to baggage claim and meets the mainland rescues Hero volunteer and hands off the paperwork.
That's it! Now the Aloha pet is on its way to the new shelter or foster home before being quickly adopted into a forever home.
Most pets fly in the cargo hold but occasionally we send a cat or small dog that can qualify as carry on. AFC do not need to do a carry on pet but those can be flown on other airlines.

Crates are broken down by the mainland rescue and other volunteers who are flying this direction offer to bring them back as baggage.

We have mainland rescue partners in LA, Bay Area, Portland, Seattle and now in Chicago.

Please share this page and if you are planning a Big Island visit or live here and have mainland guests coming. Do let me know in advance of your travel so maybe you can save a life or two.

If you have leashes or airline approved crates we can always use those.

Many thanks
Ann
