VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital

VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital We treat every client as though they were family and every pet as if they were our own. We’re glad you’re here, and we hope that you’ll stay.

VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital was first established in 1972, and has provided 50 years of quality pet care services to families in Portage and Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A mainstay of the area and an active organization in the greater Kalamazoo community, our practice has been under the sole ownership and direction of Dr. Del Heckaman since 2001. Dr. Heckaman started at OVH back in 1986, became a p

artner in 1990, and in the decade since his inception as owner has been working with our veterinary staff to further the hospital in accordance with our original mission statement. We have always believed in being a warm, friendly and inviting practice that is able to meet all the medical needs of your beloved pet family members. But while it is necessary that we remain capable on the technical level, we feel what’s really most important is our ability to get to know our clients and their pets – forging real bonds with patients and their owners throughout their lives. When we take on a new client to become their pet’s regular veterinarian, we’re in it for the long haul. Our practice’s strengths shine when we get to care for a patient throughout the lifespan, puppy-hood to adulthood. Our mission is simple: to provide the very best quality care to patients; to accomplish this by maintaining a caring hospital that is a reflection of an informed and considerate staff; and to treat our clients better than ourselves. We aim to provide the best medical and surgical care to our patients, with the continued awareness that clients are our friends as much customers. We value your business, and so we will always treat you with courtesy and patience.

This week, we're recognizing Client Service Representatives (CSRs) and the pivotal role they play in delivering hometown care in our hospitals.

CSRs help ensure that pets get the important care they need from the moment they come through the door. They're the first and last hug of every visit and are there for moments of joy and tears.

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week!

According to the ASPCA, it is estimated that over 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year. It is important to remember that any dog can bite, and certain safety tips should always be adhered to when approaching an unknown dog.

🌟 Ask first! It is always important to ask the owner prior to reaching for, or petting, their dog.
🌟 Go slow! Allow the dog to sniff your hand before petting their chest or shoulders.
🌟 Don't touch! Don't touch a dog that is sleeping, eating, or chewing a toy.
🌟 Stay away! Stay away from a dog who is barking or growling.

Say hello to Dani, the sweet pup of our team member, Sam! 🌟

Recently, Sam noticed that Dani wasn't quite herself - she was feeling weak, lethargic, and had lost her appetite. After receiving fluids and taking a nap with her circulating warm water blanket (yes, we spoil all of our patients with these!), test results showed that Dani had Addison's disease.

Also known as hypoadrenocorticism, Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands don't produce enough essential hormones. These hormones help regulate stress, metabolism, and electrolyte balance. When levels are too low, dogs can experience lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea, and more. This can also be known as an Addisonian Crisis, and many dogs with this disease are not diagnosed until they are in crisis.

The good news? Addison's disease is manageable! With lifelong hormone replacement therapy and regular check-ups, dogs like Dani can go on to live happy, healthy lives. Dani is already feeling much better and back to her normal self. If you ever notice similar symptoms in your own pup, don't hesitate to check with your vet - early diagnosis can make all the difference! 💝

Our Story

VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital was first established in 1972, and has provided 40 years of quality pet care services to families in Portage and Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A mainstay of the area and an active organization in the greater Kalamazoo community, our practice was owned and directed by Dr. Del Heckaman from 2001-2018. Dr. Heckaman started at OVH back in 1986, became a partner in 1990, and in the decade since his inception as owner has been working with our veterinary staff to further the hospital in accordance with our original mission statement. In 2018, we partnered with VCA and Dr. Heckaman has assumed the role of Medical Director. Our day to day operations and mission to support our clients and patients has not changed since the change in ownership.
