VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital

VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital We treat every client as though they were family and every pet as if they were our own. We’re glad you’re here, and we hope that you’ll stay.

VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital was first established in 1972, and has provided 50 years of quality pet care services to families in Portage and Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A mainstay of the area and an active organization in the greater Kalamazoo community, our practice has been under the sole ownership and direction of Dr. Del Heckaman since 2001. Dr. Heckaman started at OVH back in 1986, became a p

artner in 1990, and in the decade since his inception as owner has been working with our veterinary staff to further the hospital in accordance with our original mission statement. We have always believed in being a warm, friendly and inviting practice that is able to meet all the medical needs of your beloved pet family members. But while it is necessary that we remain capable on the technical level, we feel what’s really most important is our ability to get to know our clients and their pets – forging real bonds with patients and their owners throughout their lives. When we take on a new client to become their pet’s regular veterinarian, we’re in it for the long haul. Our practice’s strengths shine when we get to care for a patient throughout the lifespan, puppy-hood to adulthood. Our mission is simple: to provide the very best quality care to patients; to accomplish this by maintaining a caring hospital that is a reflection of an informed and considerate staff; and to treat our clients better than ourselves. We aim to provide the best medical and surgical care to our patients, with the continued awareness that clients are our friends as much customers. We value your business, and so we will always treat you with courtesy and patience.

Meet the staff Monday!

As part of our continued commitment to deliver world-class medicine with hometown care, each week we will be highlighting a member of our team who helps to provide exceptional care to your furry friends.

Victoria joined the team in November 2024. She is currently working toward obtaining a degree in Veterinary Nursing through Purdue University to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Her current pets include her leopard gecko, Daroga, and her Labrador retriever, Kizzy. In her spare moments, she enjoys spending time with her growing number of animals, playing the violin with the Kalamazoo Philharmonia, reading, and writing. Her off-beat obsession includes anything related to the Phantom of the Opera. Other than her creative pursuits, her greatest passions include environmentalism/sustainability and educating/promoting better animal-care habits for exotic and companion animals.

Next time you are in the office, make sure to stop and say hi to Victoria!

Nicole grew up in Holland, Michigan and has always dreamed of working with animals. She graduated from Calvin University in 2011 with a degree in Biology. She worked 8 years as a veterinary assistant at Hamilton Veterinary Clinic in Hamilton, Michigan and worked as an assistant at VCA Oshtemo for 2.5 years before beginning her management role. Her favorite part of veterinary medicine is the ability to help care for the furry family members of clients and that every day presents new opportunities to learn. Nicole has a loving family made up of her husband, Andrew, and two young boys, Sam and Will. Their furry family members include a black Labrador, Duke, a golden retriever, Captain Jack Sparrow (Jack), and a cat, Tinkerbell (Tink).

Next time you are in the office, make sure to stop and say hi to Nicole!

Meet the staff Monday!

As part of our continued commitment to deliver world-class medicine with hometown care, each week we will be highlighting a member of our team who helps to provide exceptional care to your furry friends.

This week we are highlighting Dr. Scherger: Born and raised here in Michigan, I obtained both my Bachelor of Science and my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University. I have lived across the entire southern part of Michigan from St. Joe to Grand Rapids and Lansing to the greater Detroit area. I am thrilled to be back on the west side of the state. While I enjoy all aspects of general practice, my areas of interest include surgery, diagnostic imaging, and feline medicine. I also have a background and interest in honey bee medicine and hope to start my own apiary soon.

I share my home with my husband, Jon, our cats, and our two Australian Shepherds, Chewie and Woodhouse. Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, hiking and all sorts of seasonal outdoor activities provided here in Michigan. Most importantly, I enjoy spending time with family and friends.

I am looking forward to meeting the four-legged family members who complete your household and providing great service to both you and your pets.

Next time you are in the office, make sure to stop and say hi to Dr. Scherger!

Sam has been with VCA Oshtemo since April of 2024. She grew up in Vicksburg, Michigan, and currently lives in Kalamazoo with her boyfriend (Phillip) and her two dogs (Dani and Ollie). She has spent much of her life around animals, from horses and cows, to dogs and cats, and even a three-legged deer. Her family's farm started her love for all animals, big and small. Lately she has had the opportunity to help foster special needs dogs from a local rescue, and it has filled her heart with so much joy. She has always had a passion for working with animals and helping others, and loves that she has found a position that allows her to do both every day. She is looking forward to seeing what her future holds at VCA!

Next time you are in the office, make sure to stop and say hi to Sam!
