Thankful that Congress has officially acknowledged this important day in history. We have a long way to go, but equity should be celebrated and encouraged, every single day.
Happy Mother's Day!
May your Breakfast in Bed be warm, your homemade cards filled with love, and every moment of your day jam-packed with relaxation, joy, laughter, and peace. No matter what circumstances made you a mom, may today be the day you deserve.
Do we have your attention yet?
Ticks are gross, we know. And more and more, they're becoming a real pest when it comes to parasitic infections in our area. In the last year, we've diagnosed more than 130 cases of canine Lyme disease. The year before, we diagnosed 68, and the year before that, we diagnosed only 19 -- so this represents a very real and growing issue in our area.
But what is Lyme disease, anyway? Transmitted through tick bites, Lyme disease is currently the most common vector-born disease in the U.S. Lyme disease can lead to all sorts of issues for your pet -- fatigue and lethargy, loss of appetite, swollen and painful joints, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. But left untreated long enough, and your dog's heart, kidneys, and nervous system could be affected.
The good news is that there's an effective preventative available. We offer annual Lyme disease vaccines, which are quickly becoming part of our core vaccine recommendations. We also strongly recommend year-round flea/tick preventative such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or Simparica Trio. These medications kill the tick before it has a chance to infect your loved one with Lyme disease.
Ticks can be active whenever the air temperature is above freezing, so stopping prevention in the winter months is not recommended in our climate zone. Treating Lyme disease can be quite costly, so prevention is key. If you have questions about Lyme disease and your pet, please contact us today.
Today, weirdly enough, is "If your pet had thumbs day." So if your fur-kid had opposable thumbs, what would they use them for? Would they get a Thumbs Up or a Thumbs Down for the way they use their new digit? Best answer wins a prize pack on us!
Our next Black History honoree hasn't just helped animals. Henrietta Lacks has done more to advance modern medicine than anyone else in existence -- and she did so without her consent or knowledge. Her story is both fascinating and heartbreaking, and we owe her more than we can probably ever fully understand.
It's time to post those pictures! Today, we're not celebrating the BIG GAME. There's plenty of that going around already. Instead, we're celebrating one of the greatest pop culture events in history! So if you've got a pet named after one of the Beatles... now's your chance to show off your pal!
ATTENTION:
We will be closing at noon on Thursday, December 23rd and will remain closed until Monday, December 28th. We will also be closing on New Year's Eve at noon, and will reopen on January 2nd. Please make sure you order any medication or prescription pet food early, as there won't be anyone available during the holidays.
It's the most wonderful time of the year... and that often means emergency trips to the vet. So follow these tips to help keep your furry friend healthy and happy, this season and beyond.
February Tick.
***Urban Mythbuster Alert***
Fleas and ticks are active year-round, whether the temperature is low or not. Take a look at this tick we pulled off a cat’s ear, this afternoon. He was lively and looking for lunch, while the temperature hovered right at the freezing mark.
We have seen an astronomical bump in the number of dogs testing positive for Lyme disease, this year, from 23 cases two years ago to 70 this past twelve months. Flea and tick prevention is critical to keeping your pets healthy, long term, and though it may seem like it isn’t necessary in the winter months, the proof is irrefutable.
We’re celebrating our fantastic staff, all week, and *some* of them are enjoying the festivities more than others. (Josh Beaghan)
