It looks like we've got a surge of Carolina Wrens around the homestead this week. Maybe a few of them decided to seek refuge here after the recent hurricane in the South. They've found a great home in our aviary, with plenty of water, food, and safe spaces to explore. Welcome, little wrens!

It's been a busy September and we're rolling back into a Homestead Farmstand rhythm with some tasty treats for you. Some familiar favorites like our Kitchen Sink Cookies. A new recipe using Butternut Squash from our garden and rosemary. And some delicious tried and true Banana Walnut mini breads. If you're lucky you may even get here in time for some fresh baked Homestead Bread or free-range Garden girl Chicken eggs. See you soon.

Our journey as DIY partners began about eight years ago with a humble picnic table. An impulse buy at Lowe’s, it was a $49.99 challenge that nearly broke us—literally. We lacked the right tools, snapped drill bits, and contemplated quitting countless times during that grueling day. But we persevered, and the pride in completing that project was immense.

Since then, we've transformed our outdoor space with pallet fences, a pergola-covered patio (where the infamous picnic table sits) and a 25' x 15' spacious chicken run. This weekend's 15' x 8' metal roof addition is perfect shelter for our feathered Garden Girls flock.

If you ever doubt your abilities, remember this: we started with a picnic table and are now building a small homestead.

These tiny little squash tendrils will grasp onto anything. Here's hoping their blossoms invite all the pollinators so these arches will soon hold Butternut, Acorn and Honey nut squashes.

She's not hendicapped, she's hendicapable. We have a special needs chicken. Her name is Cardamom and she's a Cinnamon Queen. A few days after we brought her home, we noticed she was different. After battling a case of wry neck, we realized she definitely was a little different. After consulting with a special needs FB group, we have learned there are others out there! Cardamom probably has a birth defect or scoliosis. She cannot lift her head like other chickens and kinda resembles the Hunchback of Notre Dame. We knew what we needed to do - we needed to love all over this little gal and give her the best life she can have. After a few modifications to our outdoor run, Cardamom can now do all the things the other chickens in her flock can do. Just yesterday, she flew down from a 3' roost all by herself! Proud chicken momma's over here! 🐓🐔

Curious to see if the future of home selling will lean towards lower-maintenance, sustainable options. Would no-mow yards, raised vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and even chicken coops become the new must-haves? It's an intriguing thought.
