Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue

Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue We are a 501c3 rescue that is dedicated to helping Bernese Mountain Dogs and Berner mixes in need.
(2)

The mission of the Michigan Bernese Rescue program is to take in purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs that are in shelters, or whose owners cannot care for them, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor for Bernese Mountain Dogs that might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Meet Victor!
He's a 1.5 yr old neutered Bernese Mtn Dog.
🐾 Are you the perfect home for him to kick off 2025 in?

He's one BIG goofy boy at 84lbs and still growing. His Dad was around 100lbs so by the looks of his paws he's still growing into them.

He's good with everyone. Happy with kids of all ages to hang out with. He will require a fenced yard. He often comes when called, but is not reliable so a fenced in yard will be required at his furever home.

- He appears to be great with other dogs, but will need a meet and greet with other dogs in the home to ensure they get along.

- He has done a wellness visit at a vet to meet cats and did fine there with them.

- Victor has full run of his foster home 24/7 he does not go in a crate. The longest he has been left alone is about 4 hours and he did just fine!

- He loves to play with his toys, run after balls in the backyard, play tug of war with his rope, going on walks and being outside he loves all that. He also just loves to be wherever you are as Berners tend to do.

Victor is still very much a puppy with a lot of energy and some training to work on. His perfect family is a family that is active and willing to take him on walks or play in the yard and one that has the time/resources to work on training would be perfect for him. Fosters have a very loud house with a 2 and 4 year old and the noise does not bother him at all. He's also great with the kids. He does whine at the door when they leave and is extremely excited when we come home so we do think he would prefer a home where he isn't left alone too long/too often.

His fosters haven't come across much that scares him besides common things like the vacuum cleaner and fireworks (we had neighbors celebrating Diwali). He does bark a lot when he sees other neighbors/dogs outside. It also takes him a little while to calm down and welcome friends/family into our home. The longer he's been with his foster family, the better he is at taking cues from them that our guests are friendly, but he does still bark and take time to warm up.

He is so polite around the dinner table/when food is out! Occasionally he will come up to the table and beg while they are eating, but all it takes is simple "no, go lay down" and he'll leave.

Victor is doing soo well at his training and will make a great companion.

He is up to date on his vaccines.

He is located in Carmel, IN.
If you are interested in Victor you will have to arrange a meet up at his fosters home.
Adopters must be willing to meet him and pick up at his foster home. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange transportation to forever homes.

She needs a family whose patient and willing to give her time to settle in and blossom into the dog that she can be, and also needs a home with a female primary or co-owner - she takes longer to warm up to men.

Please share and let's get this girl her Christmas (or other winter holiday) miracle!

Pupdate - Carter has been adopted.

🎁🎅🎄🐾 Looking to add some warmth and magic to your home this holiday season?

Meet Carter, a fun 3yr old Bernese Mountain Dogs who is ready to start her next chapter with a loving family. This sweetheart is a bit shy, her gentle soul will need a patient and understanding home to help her grow in confidence, trust, and joy.

About Carter:
🌞 The Sunshine in Your Day
A snuggle enthusiast who adores gentle hugs and affection.
Loves outdoor adventures like squirrel-watching or exploring trails going on walks.
Always happy to bring her cheerful energy to brighten your life.

Her Ideal Family:
Carter is looking for a family that understands their shy nature and is committed to giving her time, space, and love as she settles in. With your guidance, she'll learn her surroundings, proper Bernese Mountain Dog manners, and the joy of a forever home.

🎁 This Christmas, give her the gift of a loving home—and let her gift you with a lifetime of devotion.

🔸 Carter appears very comfortable around all dogs and makes friends easily.

🔸 She has been good home alone. No crate needed. Before you go away pick up non-toys as she may take them thinking they are hers.

🔸 Favorite things - Enjoys lots and lots of snuggles, chasing squirrels, walks around neighborhood and loves to run on a trail or in parks.

🔸 Her perfect family would be a family that she can just hang out with as she's pretty low maintenance. She loves being with her people.

🔸 Carter is eager to share her love and might even jump up to give you a big hug and wrap her paws around you. Because of this we feel she should be around older kids over the age of 10.

🔸 She wants to always be part of what's going on. She is 75lbs and best with kids over 10 that aren't easily knocked down due to her not understanding her strength & size.

🔸 FENCED YARD IS REQUIRED as she is easily spooked still in her new environment and may panic.

🔸 She has not been tested with cats, but she has a low prey drive and we suspect she'd be alright in a home with them.

Just like her namesake, Carter loves to Keep On The Sunny Side.

Carter is located in Bloomfield Hills, MI. This sweet girls new family must be willing to travel for pick up. Adopters must be willing to pick up at their foster home. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange transportation to forever homes.
She is spayed and up to date on her vaccines.

If you are interested in Carter you can apply through this link.

FOSTERS NEEDED

The holidays are tough for many people, and unfortunately, we get a lot of surrenders this time of year.

We need safe, warm temporary (or permanent!) homes for these dogs both now and after the New Year.

Our biggest needs are in MI, OH, and IN. We can also work with Chicago/Milwaukee and Pittsburgh folk!

If you have any questions about fostering, just ask here.

There Is Still Time to Help!!!

We are still trying to reach our $10,000 goal for this year's . Without your support, we cannot continue to rescue dogs like Cordelia.

Cordelia is our hospice puppy who will live out the rest of her life in her loving foster home. Cordelia came to us with significant neurological and orthopedic issues that she had since birth. She has seen many veterinarians and specialists. Surgery will not give her the best quality of life. Right now she is a happy pup who is entering her teenage phase and we plan to keep her as happy as we can. A donation today will help with her medical and foster care.

Big or small, all donations matter ❤

🐾 Help Us Help Dogs 🐾

In 2024, our rescue spent over $170,000 in veterinary expenses saving Bernese Mountain Dogs. We don't turn dogs away with medical issues. We want every dog to be given a chance at a happy life. We need your help to keep saving dogs!

This Giving Tuesday, your contribution can help provide life-saving medical treatments, behavioral training, and foster homes for Bernese Mountain Dogs in need. Here’s how your support can make a real difference:

$30 can cover the cost of essential vaccinations for one dog.
$50 can provide the first round of treatment for a dog in need of urgent veterinary care.
$100 can help provide a month of food and vaccinations for a rescued dog.
$250 can support the life-saving surgery necessary for some dogs to transition into loving homes.

By donating, you’re not just giving money—you’re giving these dogs the chance they deserve to live a life full of love and comfort. We have a $10,000 goal for this . Help us achieve that goal by donating below!

The Power of Rescue: A Second Chance for Izzy

The rescue process is not just about finding these dogs a new home; it’s about restoring their faith in humanity. When they are rescued from neglectful situations, the transformation is remarkable. From medical care to rehabilitation, every Bernese Mountain Dog who enters the Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue needs time, resources, and a community of supporters who are willing to help.

Meet Izzy! Izzy has been with our rescue for over a year. She is a sweet 5 year old female who needs our help. Why has she been with us for over a year? Izzy began to yelp when using the bathroom outside. It has taken a long time for vets to pinpoint the problem. Izzy has a bulging disc that seems to bother her when she is in certain positions.

The road to Izzy being pain-free for the rest of her days is a costly one. She is in need of spinal surgery to take care of that bulging disc. A donation to our will go towards the cost of her surgery.

❤ A Heartfelt Plea for Bernese Mountain Dogs: Join Us This Giving Tuesday to Make a Difference ❤

As we approach the season of giving, there’s no better time to reflect on those who need our help the most. These majestic dogs, often born into hardship, desperately need our support. With your help, we can offer them the love, care, and second chance they deserve.

We have set a goal of $10,000 for our rescue this . We have several dogs in need of surgeries to being their road to recovery and their forever family. Can you help us achieve this goal? Every dollar, every share, and every act of kindness brings us closer to a world where these dogs can experience the love and care they’ve always deserved.

Our Story

We are a group of Bernese Mountain Dog lovers dedicated to helping Berners in need. In 2017 we had about 60 needy dogs come through our program. We are all volunteer and are a network of foster homes. Every dog that comes in is a member of our family. They stay in foster homes, are fully vetted and receive all the love and care they need. We are always in need of volunteers, donations and foster homes. If you would like to help please let us know!
