Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue

Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue We are a 501c3 rescue that is dedicated to helping Bernese Mountain Dogs and Berner mixes in need.
(2)

The mission of the Michigan Bernese Rescue program is to take in purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs that are in shelters, or whose owners cannot care for them, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor for Bernese Mountain Dogs that might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

*** ADOPTION ALERT ***

Gucci, a 5 year old retired mill momma, is an incredibly loving dog. The perfect house would have one or more people who would shower her with attention. She still has shy tendencies and will require one or more confident dogs in the home to teach her how to “dog.”

She has never been in a crate longer than 4 hours. However, she should not be left alone unless she is crated. An ideal situation would be someone who works from home so that she is crated only sporadically instead of every day for a full workday.

She loves to be near you and/or other dogs. She’s very intelligent and food motivated. She loves instigating and playing with dog pals. A perfect family would be home frequently. Her ideal day is to lay on the couch while you putter around the house or sit and pet her.

She still needs to learn about respecting respecting fabric. She loves eating socks and gloves. When left to her own devices and bored, she will tear (and usually eat) any fabric she can find. Her adopters will have to be diligent about putting away fabric and training her to stop eating it.

She doesn’t aggressively steal food, but she is still learning boundaries about what she is allowed to take. Food on low tables and the edge of counters is fair game for her.

She has a high prey drive for small critters.

She LOVES people of all sizes and ages. She will do fine in a bustling kid-filled household or one that’s more sedate.

If you are intersted in Gucci, please submit an adoption application at https://michiganberneserescue.org/application/ If you have an application on file within the last six months or are already approvved for adoption, please send us a message to share your interest.

Gucci is currently living in Indianapolis, and potential adopters will be required to travel there to meet her.

Gucci is pictured with her foster brother (not available for adoption) and Freya, who will be posted for adoption on Tuesday.

We wanted to give a BIG thank you to everyone for sending Clarence these warm clothes and supplies. He's much happier now and his tail is always wagging!

His skin is still really irritated but has healed a lot! Poor boy is missing a part of his ear that you can see in the picture.

More amazing news! Clarence has a fantastic family waiting to adopt him once he's fully recovered and healthy! It will be a couple weeks at least and we keep posting updates on our senior boy's progress.

Good Morning from Clarence. He’s doing well. Thank you to everyone that sent him supplies. His wish list was filled fast and look how styling he is. He’s soo much happier now all warm while his wounds heal. These really help
so he doesn’t scratch himself.

🐾‼ Adoption Alert ‼🐾

🌼 Daisy 🌼

Daisy is a 5 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. She has been stealing the hearts of every person she has met since coming into the rescue. She is a petite Berner weighing about 60lbs. She has likely never lived inside a home before and was kept in a barn for the first 5 years of her life. Daisy is looking for a calm and patient home that will show her the love she deserves. ❤

Things to know about Daisy:

- She is a quiet girl who takes things at her own pace. It may take her some time to warm up to her people but likes to be around them and enjoys their company from a distance at first.

- She must have another confident dog friend in the home. She may not be interested in playing at first, but she loves having dog companions to follow and learn from.

- Daisy has a prey drive so a home with small animals or cats is not preferred.

- She is still adjusting to living in a home. She gets scared easily and will run if given the chance. She requires a home with at least 6ft tall fence.

- She is very sweet in nature but is still shy. For this reason, we recommend homes with older, dog savvy children only or no children. It will take her some time to be ok with loud noises and rambunctious children.

If you are interested in hearing more about Diasy, please fill out an adoption application. Her caseworker and foster home are happy to answer any questions you have.

➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
Daisy is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines. If you can give this beauty a forever home, please fill out an application. She is currently located near Indianapolis, IN and you must travel to her current foster home for a meet and greet and to pick her up.

We are an all volunteer rescue and do our best to get through applications in a timely manner. It may take up to 3 weeks to notify applicants.

❗️ If you have an application on file within the last 6 months, email us at [email protected] (not Facebook messenger)- please do not apply again ❗️

Please VOTE and share to continue to get votes. I just looked and Cordelia is in second place...lets keep the Berner loving going and get her in first place.
The rescue sure could use the $10K.
Happy Friday Berner family.

Cordelia sooo deserves this cover feature.
She came into rescue last March at 4 months old. We got a call of a puppy that was wobbling and having trouble standing. Some of you may remember our posts on her. This girl is defeating the odds with her neurological condition. We chose not to do surgery due to the risks but she's a spunky girl that is now a year old. She gets around with her wheels to help her back legs and will remain in our care for as long as she chooses. Everyday is a gift with her and she has an amazing spirit her foster Mom says.

Cordelia is a rescue out of a puppy mill from Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain dog rescue. She has a shiny and bright personality!

Clarence update! Thank you everyone for your support of this sweet senior boy! Last night Clarence was kept overnight at the vets to receive treatment. This poor senior boy was so severely matted and his skin so infected that he had to be completely shaved. His head is covered in wounds, his ears are severely infected, he is positive for Lyme disease and at least 20lbs underweight. His skin was so incredibly painful he went under anesthesia to be shaved and treated. While he was out he had a dental, bloodwork and was neutered. This sweet boy has had a very eventful day but is still wagging his tail and loving people. Here is a video of him leaving the vets.

Clarence has a long road to recovery. Our donation ask for coats and treats for this sweet boy has been answered! 🙏

A huge shout out to our amazing volunteers! When we got notified Friday night about a 7 year old Berner boy living outside during this frigid weather our amazing team mobilized quickly and we were able to get him indoors, safe and loved in less than 24 hours. This boy is one of 3 new intakes this weekend and he is going to need a LOT of TLC. He is horribly thin, you can feel every bone in his body and he has a wound on his face that needs medical attention. He got his first bath today and was a true gentleman. He is going to have a lot of vet bills coming up and we would really appreciate any donations to help with his care. Despite his neglect he is a true angel, so we have named him Clarence.

Pupdate - Victor has been adopted. We received so many appliactions for him and will be reaching out to applicants to follow up. Please have patience as we process these.

Meet Victor!
He's a 1.5 yr old neutered Bernese Mtn Dog.
🐾 Are you the perfect home for him to kick off 2025 in?

He's one BIG goofy boy at 84lbs and still growing. His Dad was around 100lbs so by the looks of his paws he's still growing into them.

He's good with everyone. Happy with kids of all ages to hang out with. He will require a fenced yard. He often comes when called, but is not reliable so a fenced in yard will be required at his furever home.

- He appears to be great with other dogs, but will need a meet and greet with other dogs in the home to ensure they get along.

- He has done a wellness visit at a vet to meet cats and did fine there with them.

- Victor has full run of his foster home 24/7 he does not go in a crate. The longest he has been left alone is about 4 hours and he did just fine!

- He loves to play with his toys, run after balls in the backyard, play tug of war with his rope, going on walks and being outside he loves all that. He also just loves to be wherever you are as Berners tend to do.

Victor is still very much a puppy with a lot of energy and some training to work on. His perfect family is a family that is active and willing to take him on walks or play in the yard and one that has the time/resources to work on training would be perfect for him. Fosters have a very loud house with a 2 and 4 year old and the noise does not bother him at all. He's also great with the kids. He does whine at the door when they leave and is extremely excited when we come home so we do think he would prefer a home where he isn't left alone too long/too often.

His fosters haven't come across much that scares him besides common things like the vacuum cleaner and fireworks (we had neighbors celebrating Diwali). He does bark a lot when he sees other neighbors/dogs outside. It also takes him a little while to calm down and welcome friends/family into our home. The longer he's been with his foster family, the better he is at taking cues from them that our guests are friendly, but he does still bark and take time to warm up.

He is so polite around the dinner table/when food is out! Occasionally he will come up to the table and beg while they are eating, but all it takes is simple "no, go lay down" and he'll leave.

Victor is doing soo well at his training and will make a great companion.

He is up to date on his vaccines.

He is located in Carmel, IN.
If you are interested in Victor you will have to arrange a meet up at his fosters home.
Adopters must be willing to meet him and pick up at his foster home. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange transportation to forever homes.

To apply for Victor please use the link below.

Please be patient, as we review all applications. Their new home will be chosen based on who can meet needs the best.

Our Story

We are a group of Bernese Mountain Dog lovers dedicated to helping Berners in need. In 2017 we had about 60 needy dogs come through our program. We are all volunteer and are a network of foster homes. Every dog that comes in is a member of our family. They stay in foster homes, are fully vetted and receive all the love and care they need. We are always in need of volunteers, donations and foster homes. If you would like to help please let us know!
