Kora came to Fetch Cares overweight, had a thinning & patchy coat, injured tail and great difficulty walking. Both of her ankles had severe hyperflexion. When we took her to the vet they concluded that she probably had injured both of her ankles at some point in her life and they were never cared for properly causing the deformity. She also had significant muscle loss, especially in her hind legs. Given these issues we thought that she had degenerative myelopathy. However, as you can see in the video, she is doing SOOOO much better now. She has gained so much muscle and strength in her legs that her ankles are now probably positioned, she is running, hiking and doing everything any other dog can do. Additionally we also discovered that she had hypothyroidism and got her tail bandaged hoping it would heal on her own. Unfortunately, after two months of unsuccessfully trying to get her tail to heal we needed up having to get it amputated. Her hypothyroidism was stabilized quickly and has not been causing her any issues since. She will need to take an inexpensive daily medication for the remainder of her life for the hypothyroidism. Emergencies can happen at any moment! Timing, persistence and luck were on our side yesterday! The Lerner family was volunteering at Fetch Cares when they noticed that Mumford started choking on his food. They immediately jumped into action and got help from PJ & Tori. Mumford quickly stopped breathing, lost consciousness and his heartbeat was fading away. For about 5-6 minutes we worked on him as a team. It was terrifying and we got more desperate with each passing second.
THANKFULLY they were able to get the food dislodged using a child size Dechoker and get Mumford breathing again. Mumford was rushed to Powder Paws where the veterinary staff immediately cared for Mumford until he was stable enough to be transported to MedVet in SLC. He stay at the hospital overnight being monitored closely and receiving oxygen. To everyone’s surprise Mumford was doing so well that only after about 24 hours since the incident he was able to go home @fetch_cares . He is on restricted activity and being monitored closely for the next several days but the vets are confident that Mumford will make a full recovery. We are so thankful for everyone’s help saving Mumford. Especially Abby, Evelyn & Jessica Lerner who were right there with him when he started to choke and immediately took action. He wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them!
Once Mumford has been fully medically cleared he will be ready for adoption and he is looking forward to meeting his forever family #2 ( @fetch_cares will be his family too). We encourage everyone to learn dog first aid and CPR because you never know when an emergency may happen.
