The end of yesterday's lesson. Should have recorded the beginning because he was over it at this point. Working on forehand turns without using the lead, adding speed to the side pass, and lining up to the mounting block (that you cant see).

Went down the road for the first time today! He was an angel, spooked for a second when the first car went by but was fine with the second (low traffic road so unfortunately dont know what the 3rd car would have been like 🤣)we met 2 other horses that were in a feild, and went by a barking dog. He handled all the new things wonderfully!

Did you know?

Some say women started riding sidesaddle as early as 1382, and some say it was even earlier. In 1382, Princess Ann rode sidesaddle to marry King Richard II. This style of riding was considered the only way to properly preserve a woman's virginity, so from there on out it was the only way for a woman to ride. Ironically it wasn't until the middle ages that the idea and concept for a specially made saddle for this proper type of riding was even considered. This new saddle would offer support, comfort, and allow them to control and guide their horse better than ever before, and be able to ride without a man.

As the years went on, many saddles were created and invented to help a woman ride more comfortably, but in 1830 with the addition of an additional pummel, the tables turned for women riders. This provided the most security and freedom in their movements than ever before, allowing them to freely gallop, ride for longer periods, and even jump if they wished. They could now hunt, race, and keep up with their male counterparts while still being in control of their modesty. But what about the lower social classes? Of course, they rode out of necessity, but as a form of physical activity and fun and appropriate behavior, it was only acceptable for women of the wealthiest class to ride until as late as the 1850's. It took almost until the 1880's for a specific riding outfit to be designed and considered for a woman to ride in. Up until that point, a woman was wearing her normal day wear, which if too long, could prove to be very dangerous for the rider. This fashion quickly changed and by the early 20th century women could wear pants to ride. With this change in fashion and with the rise of the Suffergets side saddle riding slowly began to decrease in popularity. By the time the 1930's arrived, women were finally riding like their male counterparts after almost 550 years.

The thousand piece puzzle.

I look at horse training like a puzzle. Some come together pretty easy, the pieces are large, the colors are obvious, everything just seems to fit! Those are the kind that make us look good, the ones that make us seem and feel like we know what we’re doing! Sometimes it seems like you could throw one of the pieces and it would still go into place as if it were a magnet.

Then there’s the 500 piece puzzle. You can still sort by color but it takes a little more effort to find the pieces that fit. This one keeps your mind working but still gives you glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes you want to give up but then you find another couple of pieces that get you one step closer to your 500!

It’s the thousand piece puzzle that will truly test you. This puzzle is a challenge from the very beginning. It’s overwhelming from day one and you kind of want to quit before you even start. But because you crave a challenge you decide to keep going. You begin strategizing and sorting. This one requires you to look at each piece in great detail trying not to overlook anything. This is the puzzle that tests your craftsmanship. While it takes a lot more thought and effort, when the pieces start coming together the reward feels different. This one makes you feel resilient and gives you the willpower to keep going! Sometimes you feel like you have it figured out and other times you’re pretty sure there are pieces that must’ve been lost for good! But you get up and try to find them anyway because you know the puzzle deserves to be put together!
