No good deed goes unpunished! Talked to a woman who left a voicemail for training help. Has an 8 week old rott pup. Not vaccinated to come to Training yet so we discussed potty training, crate training, building a bond, etc. -all the stuff she should be working on right now. She’s explaining about the dog not being able to hold it’s urine. Sounded like more of a management issue than a physical issue, but I told her if it’s really concerning to bring her to the vet and have her tested for a UTI -turns out she did have a UTI & started meds for that. One day on medication and she’s contacting me again to ask if I will take the dog for training explain to her the dog is too young to do a board/ train, blah blah blah. Talked about training options. Next thing I know she’s contacting me again for “Boot Camp” explained again that the dog is too young. Next correspondence she is “rehoming”. Honestly, you can’t make this stuff up….
Really hope she would contact the Breeder to see if they would take the puppy back, but odds are it’s a backyard breeder that isn’t placing dogs responsibly to begin with or she would’ve never ended up in this home.
I’m sure this is not falling on the ears that need to hear it but people need to research the breed they are seeking and make sure it is suitable for their lifestyle. In fact, taking on any puppy is a commitment in time, money, effort, patience and training.
Back to the dogs… have a great day! ♥️

Great day of training today. Started off loading up day training camp and board train dogs to work on some public manners. Spent time in Farm and Fleet, FCA, and Jimmy Jo’s BBQ. Worked on public access with a couple service dogs here in training. Brooks, Gus, Tiger, Maicey, Beatrice, and Piper all did great-got many compliments on their behavior.

Those chattering teeth….it’s not JUST the cold

The next time you’re in your dog’s mouth (you do brush his or her teeth, right?) notice the bump on the roof of his mouth just behind the two front middle teeth? It’s called the ‘incisive papilla,” and near the center of it is a hole that leads to a duct that leads to the “Jacobson’s organ.” The Jacobson’s organ is a very cool thing. Put in “See Spot Run” terms, it allows your dog to literally taste the air by combining taste and smell.

Dogs use their Jacobson’s organ to experience sexual markers (pheromones) left behind by other dogs via urine, or when coming across the scent of a bitch in season. While dogs don’t have a Flehmen response seen in many other animals (throwing back the head, and raising or curling the upper lip which helps open the entry slits into Jacobson’s Organ), dogs will “chatter their teeth” instead. A dog might hold his mouth in a quasi-open position that looks a little like a grin, or he might even lick the air. And you thought he was just happy to see you.

One theory holds that the Jacobson’s Organ could account for a dog’s ability to identify and recognize other animals and people. It’s also believed that it’s this organ that enhances a newborn’s ability to find its mother.

Working on more advanced equipment training skills with a “leave it” in our E collar class Saturday. The remote collar is a great tool when used properly, unfortunately, I see so many dogs get very confused and even ruined by improper starts with inexperienced handlers and garbage equipment.
