It's a beautiful day outside! Did you know that a whopping 12% of a dogs brain is dedicated to processing scent? Compare that to humans who only use .01%. This means that the more a dog sniffs, the more they are using their brain and wearing themselves out (much like me doing math problems). Take advantage of this beautiful day and bring your dogs on a "sniffari"!

4th of July can be a scary occasion for dogs. Big booms, bright lights, strange vibrations. Keep your dog safe by joining them any time they are outside, and only bringing them out when necessary for bathroom breaks. July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. Have fun this holiday season!

Training tip: Puppy Socialization (continued)

When socializing your new puppy with other dogs, be selective. It will be tempting to bring your new friend to the dog park, but the best thing to do is to invite over new dog friends who are well socialized and have all their shots. This helps ensure your dog has a controlled experience. Many times new puppies can be traumatized at a young age by unruly dogs at a dog park, which can cause reactivity to other dogs in their older years. Dog parks can also be a breeding ground for diseases that your pup has not yet built up immunity to, such as Parvo, which can be deadly.

Training tip: Puppy Socialization

Does puppy socialization consist of introducing your new fluffy bundle to many new dogs? Well, sort of, but it's so much more!
Puppy socialization is one of the best ways to give your new friend a great start to being a confident, happy dog.
So what is it, you ask? Well to put it simply, puppies should be safely and positively introduced to as many new stimuli as you can manage. This includes things like dogs outside of their home pack, kids, other animals, men in hats, the oh so dreaded vacuum cleaner and more.
