This is why having a reliable recall and "leave it" command is important!
Despite his PFD, Monday didn't have the stamina to finish the retrieve. Notice that he even started to turn back toward shore, before my recall/leave it, but then started back toward the ball. He knows that recalling and leave it is above all else. This wouldn't have been possible with only "force free" techniques.
Was he too far out? Not really, but I'm coming to terms with his age and limitations. So to avoid panic, be proactive rather than reactive, I decided to was time to just let the ball go and the dog deferred to my judgement. Plus, I didn't feel like going for a swim.

Have you and your dogs felt a little cooped up the last two days? Well, group class at Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption starts tonight at 7pm. It's a great way to get some much needed activity and stimulation, dog and human alike!
We'll be meeting behind the main shelter if the rain is kept at bay...
The class is FREE for first-timers and UPR foster guardians. $13/dog or $10/dog for families with more than one!
This is Pandoro (as opposed to Pandora) ;)
He's a special dog and he needs a special owner. Look at this great obedience session with volunteer handler, Steven!
FREE PRIVATE LESSONS!
Tomorrow (6/6/14), at Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption, for anyone who has adopted a dog from the shelter. 3pm-7pm. (We will stay later if we have to!)
We will also be doing dog training demonstrations with some of the dogs that live there. Show up with any questions about your dog or if you're interested in adopting any of the dogs that live in the shelter.
This video is volunteer handler, Carrie, working with Ingrid. Carrie is teaching Ingrid the "down" command. Ingrid has been living in the shelter too long and would love a home where she can be active. Ingrid is very sweet, smart, and sassy and is waiting for YOU!
(*Group class charge for those who attend group class regularly)
Ellie with Lily and Monday
Lily and Monday build confidence in Ellie with calm play.
Here is volunteer apprentice trainer Steven demonstrating Praline's finish to the heel position.
Steven's been working with us for the last few months and as a natural dog handler, he has developed great technique and skill. He works with some of the dogs at UPR that need extra attention. He does all this while having a full-time job and he has wife Katie have just become new parents (to a human!). Good work, Steven!
Praline is a special pup. She would do great with a single man or woman looking for a companion in their home. She likes to work, exercise, and cuddle.
Contact Unleashed Pet Rescue or us to talk about adopting her.
See Duke run! A very nice distance recall like this can be practiced and utilized in real life scenarios. In Duke's case, he's a very insecure dog, yet he excels in obedience. Duke's been learning that his Mom can control him in any situation using basic obedience. Therefore, in Duke's eyes, because Mom controls him, she controls the entire world and hence, he doesn't have to be so nervous.
We will talk about all of these things and more tonight as we host group class at Unleashed Pet Rescue in Mission, KS at 7pm.
FREE for first-timers. $13/dog or $10/dog for families with more than one furry family member.
See y'all there!
Is your dog reactive to other dogs on a walk? Sometimes, when a dog hasn't had much impulse control work, the desire to socialize can cause frustration. Thus, a false display of aggression. Here are the steps to leash aggression or barrier frustration:
1.) Stimulation: "Hey! A potential new friend!"
2.) Frustration: "Let go of my leash, man! I gotta go smell this dog! I promise I won't do the crazy thing!"
3.) Drive: "He's not letting go and neither am I...!!"
4.) Aggression: "AAAHHH!!!!"
Many of my clients were afraid to let their dogs socialize with other dogs because of leash/barrier frustration. If you're having this problem, please send us a message!
"Vader" has had the same problem. With a little impulse control training, he's been more trustworthy for socialization and easier walks around the neighborhood. Here he is playing with #MentorMonday
