Poor nutrition can significantly impact your dog's heart and overall health. A poor diet can lead to obesity, high cholesterol, and increased inflammation, all of which strain your dog's heart. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can help protect the heart and prevent heart disease and other health issues. We highly recommend contacting us at (816) 741-8600 so we can guide you in choosing high-quality food that meets your dog's specific needs.

With the busy pace of life, our dogs can't always be with us. We often have to leave them at home and return to them later. As a result, some pets may develop separation anxiety. Fortunately, there are effective ways to help them overcome this. You can train them to understand that you'll be back soon and that there's no need to worry. Techniques like counter-conditioning, gradual desensitization, increasing physical stimulation, and creating a safe space can help. If you need more guidance, please call us at (816) 741-8600.

Certain dog breeds are significantly predisposed to heart disease, and one of these breeds is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is particularly susceptible to Mitral Valve Disease (MVD). This condition can lead to heart failure due to the degeneration of the mitral valve in the heart, causing leakage that results in fluid buildup in the lungs and enlargement of the heart. MVD often affects older dogs, with symptoms potentially appearing as early as age 5 or 6. If you own this breed, regularly monitoring their health and watching for signs, including coughing, lethargy, and difficulty breathing, is essential. Remember to schedule their wellness check-ups with us at (816) 741-8600 so we can evaluate their heart and overall health.

When your dog's dental health is neglected, there's a significant risk of developing gum disease, which can progress to periodontal disease. If bacteremia occurs, bacteria from the infected gums can enter the bloodstream and spread to other organs, including the heart. Over time, this can damage the heart's structure and function, potentially leading to heart disease. Maintaining your dog's dental health and other health efforts is a vital step in protecting your dog's heart health. Contact us at (816) 741-8600 to evaluate your dog's dental health!

It's, in fact, TRUE! Even though your pet looks healthy, getting routine blood work during their wellness exams is always recommended. There may be underlying conditions that aren't detectable by the naked eye. Detecting potential problems is one of the essential reasons dogs need blood work, especially for seniors, to monitor their organ health and age-related conditions. Have you scheduled your pet's routine wellness exam? Contact us at (816) 741-8600.

Different breeds of cats mature at slightly different rates. Depending on your kitten's breed, it might take them somewhat longer to mature. Maine C***s, for example, aren't considered mature until about 3 or 4 years old. Some cats never even really outgrow their kitten phase! Looking for more fun facts about your cat? Follow us for more. Our Story

Platte Woods Animal Hospital was opened in 1971 by Dr. G.T. Barrows. The original building was a vacation cottage and was remodeled by Dr. Barrows by adding on a new addition in the late 1980’s. In 1993, Dr. Ron Armstrong purchased the practice and moved here after spending 11 years in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1996 Platte Woods Animal Hospital became fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, thus becoming only one of a small handful of Kansas City Hospitals to be honored.

In 2017 we retired the original building and built a brand new state of the art facility at the same location. Our hospital offers state of the art medicine, grooming, training, and boarding. It has been the long-time dream of Dr. Ron Armstrong to expand his hospital, and we enjoy giving tours whenever possible.
