If your dog ate candy and you act quickly, there is nothing to worry about. The first thing you need to do is keep your pup near you so you can monitor them in case of an emergency, even if they are not showing any symptoms. Signs of a major problem include choking, vomiting, tremors, or intestinal blockage, which isn’t noticeable at first. If you know what kind of candy your dog got into, you can look up any toxic ingredients in it to be aware of. If they ingested chocolate, call the poison control hotline or us immediately. Keep them hydrated with plenty of water only after talking with us. Be sure to bring them in to see us so we can check to make sure they are in top shape. Call us at (816) 741-8600.

We all want our homes to smell nice and clean; however, as pet owners, we have to be extra careful that whatever we are using isn’t harmful to our fur babies. Incense is dangerous to cats as their sense of smell is 14 times stronger than that of humans and the smell can be too intense for them to handle. It also produces smoke, which can be bad for their respiratory system and increase the risk of your cat developing asthma. Opt for cat-friendly methods of keeping your house smelling fresh and clean by dusting frequently, using baking soda to absorb odors, having fragrant plants such as rosemary or sage, or simmering a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, apples, or vanilla. Stay current with your cats' healthcare needs and schedule their appointment by calling (816) 741-8600.

One of the key reasons for the increased longevity of altered cats is their reduced risk of certain types of cancer. Intact female cats have a greater chance of developing pyometra (a potentially fatal uterine infection) and uterine, mammary gland, and other cancers of the reproductive system. Neutering male pets eliminates their risk of testicular cancer and eliminates the possibility of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia, which can affect their ability to defecate. Questions? Similar to humans, dogs need regular exercise to stay in good and healthy condition. Canines are active animals – especially as many breeds were bred for high activity levels. A lack of exercise can lead to decreased lean muscle strength and weaker bones. Keep your pup healthy by incorporating regular exercise into their lifestyle and don't forget to schedule regular check-ups with us! Contact us at (816) 741-8600.

Kittens require a large amount of energy – almost two to three times that of an adult cat! They also need about 30% of that energy to come from protein. Make sure that the food you are feeding them is specifically formulated for kittens to ensure that they are receiving all the important nutrients your fur baby needs to grow strong and healthy! Your kitten will need to eat kitten-specific food until it reaches maturity at about one year of age. Not sure what is best for your cat? Contact us at (816) 741-8600 to set up a health plan purr-fectly tailored to their needs!

Our Story

Platte Woods Animal Hospital was opened in 1971 by Dr. G.T. Barrows. The original building was a vacation cottage and was remodeled by Dr. Barrows by adding on a new addition in the late 1980’s. In 1993, Dr. Ron Armstrong purchased the practice and moved here after spending 11 years in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1996 Platte Woods Animal Hospital became fully accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, thus becoming only one of a small handful of Kansas City Hospitals to be honored.

In 2017 we retired the original building and built a brand new state of the art facility at the same location. Our hospital offers state of the art medicine, grooming, training, and boarding. It has been the long-time dream of Dr. Ron Armstrong to expand his hospital, and we enjoy giving tours whenever possible.
