Happy Friday! It’s getting cold outside but that doesn’t mean fall is over quite yet! We still have thanksgiving coming! We want our animal companions to enjoy the holidays but we want them to remain safe, here’s a few tips to help. Do your best to make sure your pets don’t get the holiday food. There could be choking hazards as well as toxic foods and foods that are hard for them to digest. Keep trash in a safe area. Trash can be choking hazard also. Especially during the holidays our trash can have tasty food drippings that our pets love and being extra cautious could be a life saver. Lastly, be on the look out for those festive decorations. Decorations are pretty to look at but we all know that one pet that tries their hardest to play and maybe eat them and no one wants that. Hope this helps and that everyone has a safe and fun Thanksgiving!

Happy Halloween! Is everyone ready to have a scary good evening?! Halloween can be such a fun time for us but it isn’t always fun for our furry friends. There are some things you can do to make sure they have a fun and safe night. One way is to keep the sweet treats away, most of the candies aren’t safe for them to consume. If you want to treat them consider making or buying some treats. Another way to keep our pets safe is to minimize their excitement, if your pets aren’t good with loud noises and startling objects you can keep them in a safe quiet area to minimize stress. Lastly if your pets startle easily consider moving outside to greet your trick-or-treaters, this way the constant knocking and doorbell ringing doesn’t make your pets more anxious. We want everyone to enjoy their evening and have a super spooky time!!!👻🎃👻🎃👻

Today September 26th is Remember me Thursday. This is a day to remember those pets who never got a second chance and bring awareness to the millions of pets still waiting in shelters to be adopted. One positive of spreading awareness is that the amount of adoptions increase, puppy mill sales decrease, and euthanasias decrease. Let’s help spread the word! If you or a friend are looking for a new pet, check out your local animal shelters. There are plenty of animals in need of a good home! Have a great day and don’t forget Remember Me Thursday! 🐾

Hope everyone has a happy and safe Labor Day! Here are a few tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday!

Guard the grill:
Keep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches in order to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.

Protect your plate:
Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day such as corn on the cob, grapes, onion, chocolate, and alcohol can be toxic to pets or a choking hazards.

Beat the heat:
Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your canine companions to stay cool.

Forego the fireworks:
Not only can fireworks spook pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Make sure you have a safe and quiet area where they can go to feel safe.

Everyone wants their pets to stay safe and sometimes getting overheated happens faster than you think. There are many ways we can keep our pets safe on those extra hot days this summer. Here’s a few tips! Taking shorter walks in the cooler parts of the day is one way to keep your pets cool. Another is to make sure they are staying hydrated. In the heat it is much easier to get dehydrated, especially if they aren’t keeping up on their water intake. If possible you can keep your pets indoors on those extremely hot days and never leave your pets in the car. Even when weather isn’t severe, cars can overheat quickly leading to deadly temperatures this can be life threatening to our furry friends. A few signs of heat stress for you to keep an eye out for include: abnormal tongue/gum color, restlessness, anxiousness, excessive drooling/panting, and unsteadiness. Just remember to stay safe and stay cool!

Just as a reminder the clinic is closed now through the 4th of July. We will reopen on Friday, July 5th for calls and purchases with appointments resuming Monday morning. Have a safe and Happy 4th!

Everyday pets go missing, you see flyers up for missing pets everywhere. Right now it’s someone else’s pet but it could be yours next, so let’s talk about National microchipping month. National microchipping month brings awareness to the benefits of getting your pets microchipped such higher chances of being reunited with your pet and piece of mind. A small electrical chip called a microchip is inserted under the skin. This microchip gives an identification number when scanned that is linked specifically to your pet when registered. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and the needle used to insert it is only a little larger than a regular needle used for injections. Microchips can be placed in the office and require no anesthesia. Make sure if your pet goes missing you never have to feel that feeling of possibly never seeing them again. If you have questions or would like to schedule your microchip appointment give us a call at (816)453-2154.

Breathe in that fresh air, listen to the wind, and absorb some warm sun rays because today is Earth Day! 🌎 What a beautiful day to enjoy our planet! Here are a few ways you can participate. If you see some trash on the ground pick it up, not only is it bad for the planet but it could be bad for our pets as well if they were to ingest it. Another way you could participate is by planting some plants or a tree, plants and trees are good for creating oxygen for us to breathe and could be a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. Lastly you could take your pets out to play or for a walk, what better way to celebrate Earth Day than to enjoy all the earth has to offer including our fur babies! Have a purrrfect Earth Day!

Thump thump, thump thump. That’s the sound of a healthy heart! ❤️ April is National Heartworm Awareness Month. How do our pets get Heartworms? Heartworms are spread by those pesky insects no one cares for, mosquitoes 🦟. How do we prevent our pets from getting Heartworms? First, you get your annual heartworm test to make sure they don’t have Heartworms. After a negative heartworm test there are many different types of heartworm preventatives you can give your pets to keep them protected. Lastly keeping them on the preventative you have chosen is key to keeping them healthy! If you are out or running low stop by the clinic to get your prevention. We now carry Nexgard Plus. It covers fleas/tick, Heartworms, roundworms, and hookworms if your interested ask our staff about it today.

Hoppy Easter! Easter is an egg-citing holiday! Have you given your animal companions their Easter baskets yet? If not there is still time! We all want to keep our babies safe on this colorful holiday so here are a few tips. Although Easter egg hunts can be fun for both kids and pets, it’s a good idea to keep pets away from them. Pets can ingest the plastic eggs which can lead to internal blockage and they are also choking hazards. Easter is a nice time for those beautiful lilies, but they are extremely toxic to cats. Even just a small amount can be fatal, so if you have them keep them out of your cat’s reach. Keep all candies and chocolates out of your pets reach, chocolate is toxic to pets and other candies can be choking hazards. Let’s all have a safe and fun filled holiday!

March 28th has been chosen for Respect your cat day. You’re probably thinking we should love and respect our cats everyday but this day is very special to our feline friends. Although today cats are primarily companion animals they have a very interesting history. From being worshipped by ancient Egyptians, assisting in keeping pests down in the trenches of WWI, and now our furry friends. The history gives us great reason to spoil them a little extra with some new toys and some treats. A few ideas to show them some extra love is respecting their hunter instinct & their need to scratch by getting them a new feather toy or scratching post to satisfy these instinctive behaviors. A couple other ways to participate is to respect their desire for human interaction, your cat’s health, and snooze time. Not all cats enjoy snuggles and scratches but if they do, give them some extra love for their special day. Keeping their health in mind by getting them to the vet for their annual wellness exam and vaccinations is a great way to show you care. Lastly a cat’s sleep is very important to them, as they need more sleep than we do and their predator instincts to hunt then rest and conserve energy. If you see them snoozing respect their natural habits and love on them when they wake up. Enjoy Respect your cat day and get some snuggles!

Good morning everyone! March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month. There are many different substances that can be considered harmful to our pets, some you may realize and others we may not think about. When your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t have it’s important to act as fast as possible, poisons can work quickly. Call your veterinarian, go directly to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital, or call either ASPCA animal poison control center or pet poison helpline. If your pet has been poisoned tips to help your veterinarian include: knowing how much and what they have consumed, bringing the container or picture of the item with full ingredient list, being honest about what they have consumed, and keeping track of their symptoms. Signs of poisoning may include any of the following: vomiting, diarrhea, collapse, lack of coordination, unusual behavior, excessive drooling, or weakness/lethargy. Below is an image with the top 10 pet toxins of 2023. There are so many potential hazards for our animal companions. This is why we have to stay vigilant to make sure these hazards are less accessible so our pets are less likely to get into them. Stay safe and have a wonderful day!
