Finally a break from the blankets!!! Even my old girl is just wearing a sheet, that will come off for a few hours when it gets about freezing. (Don't mind the devil eyes from the flash, it's the only time we see the real them lol). The dogs had theirs removed last night but they're too cute not to share!

Here’s to the owners who are checking waterers for ice.
Here’s to the owners who are constantly outside to monitor their horses health in this weather.
Here’s to the owners who are switching out blankets to keep horses warm. Here’s to the owners who don’t blanket because their horses are staying warm.
Here’s to the owners who worry if their horses are warm.
Here’s to the owners who have frozen fingers but make sure the hose has been thoroughly drained before leaving. And here’s to the owners who have to keep the hose inside their house to make sure it doesn’t freeze.
Here’s to the owners who run a boarding facility and don’t sleep because they are constantly checking on everyone’s horses.
Here’s to owners who board their horses wishing they could have them home during these scary temps.
Here’s to the countless headlamps and heated vests needing charged, wet gloves drying on countertops and duct-taped snow boots trying to make it through one more season.
Here’s to the sewing sessions to repair horse blankets.
Here’s to the gate latch CPR sessions trying to heat it up by breathing on it so it can be opened.
Here’s to the countless bales of hay. Countless flakes tossed. The countless times of asking “where are the scissors?!”.
Here’s to the frozen p**p piles that get tripped over, ankles rolled over, toes stubbed over.
Here’s to the shows being rescheduled, the rehearsed patterns and hours of showmanship practice being put on hold.
Here’s to the layers of pj pants under snow coveralls.

Here’s to the part of horse ownership that isn’t so glamorous. Thank you for all YOU are doing for the safety and wellbeing of your horses during this time. ❄️💙

As a storm threat of freezing rain and snow marches across the U.S. and Canada ❄️🌨🫧🌬, below are some tips for keeping your horses safe during extreme winter weather events:

1. While lots of hay is ideal for horses to eat to keep warm, now is NOT the time to introduce a round bale if they’ve never had access to one before. It may be more work, but keep throwing them their normal hay source—just more frequently.

2. Similarly, if your horse is not used to being locked up in a stall now is NOT the time. The stress of a major change and the decreased activity can be risk factors for colic. Be sure your animals have access to shelter, hay, and drinkable water but let them move around if they choose to do so.

3. Horses that are thin, older, or fully body clipped are those most at risk in extreme weather.

4. Well fitting blankets are great but be sure horses do not get sweaty under them or that the blankets don’t soak through if snow or rain covered. Wet, cold, and covered is worse that dry, cold, and naked.

5. Some of the highest risk times are when the temperatures hover right around freezing, as that can result in sleet/freezing rain/ice that can make horses wet and therefore colder. Slippery footing is a concern, too.

6. If using electric water heaters, be sure they are functioning and not shocking horses. Take your gloves off and stick your hand in the water (briefly!) to double check.

7. “Trick” your horses into consuming extra water by flavoring a bucket, adding electrolytes to their meals, or soaking their meals in warm water. If you’ve never fed beet pulp before, be sure to add LOTS of warm water. Dry beet pulp is a common source of choke.

8. Tips of ears can be at risk for frostbite. Putting a jumper-style ear bonnet or other ear cover can protect them from wind chills.

Stay safe, friends!

Seems on these cold, wet days the question I always see is to blanket or not to blanket? My answer is it depends on the horse and is the decision of the owner. 1 of mine is typically blanketed if it's cold, 1 gets a sheet normally if it's just cold and a blanket if it's going to be wet, the other 2 don't need more than a sheet unless we've got negative numbers and even then it's more for us than them unless it's wet. I'll follow your blanketing guidelines per horse because they're all different and so are we.

This is why we can't take nice pictures! The phone smells or tastes good or something lol must investigate

Some horses are just an accident waiting to happen, this one is mine and she gives me lots of practice in wound treatment. From getting stuck in a wire fence and proud flesh to mysteriously cutting open her face and needing sutures to now we have an open stone bruise to go with the thrush. She is the reason I inspect every horse every time I see them. I want to find these things before they get bad if possible and treat them asap

Just some of the precious babies I've had the pleasure of taking care of (full disclosure most of them are ours lol)
