Today, we would love to give a heartfelt shoutout to our incredible volunteer, Heather Bauer, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.

We are beyond grateful for Heather’s incredibly generous donation of Benebones for our shelter dogs. Mental enrichment is essential for our furry friends as they spend most of their time in their kennels, and Heather’s donation is making a huge difference.

Our sweet Zayda, along with all the other dogs, is absolutely thrilled with the Benebones! Thank you, Heather, for bringing so much joy and enrichment to our beloved shelter pups.

If there are any companies or individuals who are interested in doing something similar, we'd love to hear from you! If this opportunity interests you, you can contact the shelter by reaching out to [email protected].

Summer has officially begun and we’re about to be in our busiest time of year for animals arriving. Our shelter managed a high volume of animal intake while maintaining strong adoption numbers in May, but it will be crucial that our teams continue to be diligent in engaging our community for support, managing our operations efficiently, and acting with a sense of urgency to help save lives. Reducing the average length of stay for both dogs and cats, meeting our community’s ever-increasing needs with respect, kindness, and professionalism, and completing impressive numbers of surgeries reflect how effective our teams have been at managing the daily challenges we face in this work.

Shelter Statistics for May:

🐾 Total Intake: 1,567 new animals (733 dogs, 818 cats, and other small animals).
🐾 Adoptions: 751 pets adopted (426 dogs, 315 cats, and 10 other animals).
🐾 Stray Dogs Brought in by Public: Increased by 9% in May but total year-to-date slightly lower than 2023.
🐾 Dogs Impounded by Animal Services: Up 5% in May and up 11% year-to-date.
🐾 Dog Intakes in May: Recorded the largest number of dogs arriving in May in the history of Kansas City.
🐾 Reduced Length of Stay: Average stay for dogs decreased to 18.9 days and for cats to 13.1 days.
🐾 Returned Adoptions: The rate of adopted dogs returned in the first 30 days has decreased by 24% year-to-date, thanks to improved matchmaking and post-adoption support.
🐾 Spay/Neuter Surgeries: 785 surgeries performed last month - marking the highest number of spay/neuter surgeries performed in May in our shelter's history. Included 157 low-cost surgeries for community cats and 20 free surgeries for reclaimed pit-bull-type dogs. The number of total spay/neuter surgeries are up 19.3% over last year.

Community Impact:

🐾 Animal Services Officers worked 2,190 case activities, including 232 cruelty investigations.
🐾 The Pet Support Center assisted 1,530 residents with in-person services and helped 417 animals stay with their families instead of being surrendered to the shelter.
🐾 Our Keep ‘Em Together KC programs supported 392 KCMO families with 668 pets in May with subsidized pet medical care provided by KCPP, free pet foods/supplies, and nearly $9,000 in reclaim fees forgiven.
🐾 Our Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) teams have been highly active, with the number of owned, community, and outdoor cats coming in for spay/neuter services more than doubling compared to the previous year. Specifically, 576 cats have already received spay/neuter services in 2024, reflecting a robust community engagement and a commitment to controlling the feline population.
🐾 Our Pets for Life (PFL) program provided families in the 64127 zip code hundreds of free pet supplies and pet foods, with 7 more free spay/neuter surgeries completed in May, totaling 17 free spay/neuter surgeries provided by KCPP so far this year.

Community Engagement and Support:

🐾 Pawsitive Protection Drive-Through Event: On May 11th, we partnered with Councilwoman Melissa Patterson-Hazley, the Pet Resource Center, and the City of KCMO to vaccinate, microchip, and license 226 pets from Kansas City, MO.
🐾 Extensive Media Coverage: We had 303 news stories and 86 broadcast mentions, reaching an audience of nearly 634 million people. Notably, the story of a missing 14” alligator from a local school petting zoo event gained national attention through USA Today, The Washington Post, and Yahoo News.
🐾 Volunteer Engagement: In May, 633 volunteers dedicated 3,587 hours, equivalent to 21 full-time employees. This included significant contributions of time from businesses and groups such as Lockton Companies and Farmers Insurance.
🐾 Feline Foster Care Program: We saw a 178% increase in kittens in foster homes, with 407 underage kittens going to foster last month - and no kittens spending more than one night in our shelter.

These accomplishments reflect a high level of commitment from our entire organization to improving the lives of pets and their families in our community. We are so proud of all the incredible work our teams do every day! You better run to the shelter to meet this handsome boy! Sprint was recently brought to the shelter as a stray after he was found abandoned on a property with no food or water. We don't know anything about Sprint's past, but we do know that he can't wait to run straight through the front door of his perfect home! He's dreaming of having his own backyard to race around and play in, with lots of love (and treats) to go around. Sprint would love a family who is willing to work with him and teach him how to be the best boy ever! Sprint prefers to be the king of the castle so no other male dogs in the home, please. He would love to meet any potential female siblings to ensure it is a great match.

We are still very full at KC Pet Project and are hoping for a great weekend of adoptions. The weather is supposed to be pretty warm, but luckily we have a large air conditioned lobby, a coffee shop serving up delicious lemonade, and hundreds of adorable pets waiting to meet you! So stop by this weekend and find your new best friend! Visit https://kcpetproject.org/adopt/ to see all pets currently available for adoption.

The last few weeks have been very challenging for us at KC Pet Project, and we can see why. Every day, we have struggled with no open kennels for incoming dogs, and when one dog leaves to go to a home or into foster, their kennel is immediately filled with a new dog from our intake area. We've also had multiple litters of underage kittens coming in daily.

In the past 18 days, more than 1,000 new pets have come to KC Pet Project. 401 dogs, 585 cats, and many other pets that all require care and support from our dedicated team. We are asking for your help to get through these summer months. Here is how you can get started today:

Adopt - We have hundreds of pets that are available for adoption today. It's Waived Fee Wednesday for all dogs 6 month of age and over 20 pounds, and we have cats and kittens looking for homes at 14 locations around the metro. Don't forget that all dogs on our At-Risk List are eligible for free adoptions every day - 86 dogs qualify as of today.

Foster - Taking a pet or a litter of kittens into your home temporarily will help us save lives by opening up new kennels for incoming pets. You can sign up today at http://kcpetproject.org/foster or email [email protected] to get started.

Help Lost Pets Get Back Home: If you find a stray pet, help them get back home by walking through the neighborhood, posting their photo to , and taking steps to get them back to their families before bringing them to the shelter. Visit https://kcpetproject.org/services/found-pets/ to learn about how to help lost pets get back home.

Donate: All of these pets need supportive care through sheltering, staffing, medicine, and so much more. Your donations go straight toward the care of the 1,002 pets that have come to our shelter in the past 18 days.

Our shelters are overflowing with incredible pets who are desperately waiting for their perfect homes. We are so full that we begin most days without a single open kennel. Each time a dog finds a home, we clean the kennel immediately to make room for another hopeful pup waiting in our temporary intake kennels.

Here are some of the newest faces longing for a loving home. Tomorrow is Waived Fee Wednesday, and we are urgently hoping to create some space! During this weekly special, all dogs weighing 20 pounds or more that are at least 6 months old can go home for free.

Every adopted pet is microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered. Each adoption is truly life-saving! Come by tomorrow and give one of these sweet dogs the loving home they deserve.

Join us for our upcoming Dog Fostering Fair at the KC Campus for Animal Care from June 28th to June 30th! Just like our successful event last August, we are excited to welcome potential fosters for both short-term and long-term opportunities for dogs in our shelter.

Event Details:

🐾 In-Person Sessions: Held in two-hour increments (10 AM, 12 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM), each session will provide you with everything you need to know about temporarily providing care for a shelter dog through KC Pet Project. You'll leave ready to start your fostering journey and make a positive impact on the lives of our shelter animals.
🐾 Immediate Fostering: After completing the onboarding session, you can take a dog home the same day! We also have a foster-to-adopt program, which allows you to take an at-risk dog home for two weeks to see if they’re a perfect fit for your family.
🐾 Support Provided: While fostering, we supply all necessary items—food, toys, leashes, collars—and offer behavioral and medical support to ensure a smooth experience for both you and your foster pet.

Fostering helps reduce the stress on our dogs, giving them a loving temporary home and allowing us to learn more about their personalities. This crucial step increases their chances of finding an adoptive home and improves their overall well-being.
No appointment is necessary—just choose a session time that works for you and come by to learn how you can make a difference. Your involvement as a foster parent is vital. Whether you’re looking for a short-term commitment or considering adoption, your support helps create a brighter future for our furry friends.

Visit https://kcpetproject.org/event/dog-fostering-fair/ to learn more! We can't wait to see you there.

Recently, we had an incredible visit from our friends at Zenitel!

Last year, during their annual Day of Giving, they partnered with another generous group to donate and install $100k worth of IT & Security upgrades on our KC Campus for Animal Care, completely free of charge.

This year, we were thrilled when they offered to return! Even with a smaller team, they were able to accomplish so much! Zentinel tackled a big outdoor cleanup, splitting into groups to handle various tasks: running w**d eaters and trimmers, pulling w**ds from the landscape beds in the south lot, removing large fallen branches and sticks from the walking grounds, picking up trash, and making some adjustments to our current intercom system.

We are so grateful to this amazing group for their hard work. Thank you, Zenitel, for your continued support and dedication!

🌞🐾 Keep Your Pets Safe During Hot Temperatures! 🐾🌞

As the temperatures rise, it's crucial to ensure our furry friends are safe and comfortable. Here are some important tips to protect your pets from the heat from our Animal Services Division:

🌳 Provide Proper Shelter: Ensure your pets have shelter from the elements. A dog house, shade, or better yet, bring them inside on days where we are experiencing extreme heat.

🚗 No Hot Cars: Never leave your pets in hot cars, even for a short period.

💧 Fresh Water & Food: Always keep fresh water and food available for your pets.

📞 Report Distress: If you see an animal in distress in Kansas City, MO, please call 311
or 816-683-1373 to report it. You can also report online at https://kcpetproject.org/animal-services-division/animal-services-report-form/.

One of the most impactful ways we save lives is through fostering! We have countless wonderful dogs who would thrive in a foster home. Many are scared or stressed in the shelter environment, and a foster home can help them blossom. Plus, fostering allows us to learn more about their personalities and behaviors, making it easier to find their perfect homes.

Today, we’re featuring some easy-to-care-for dogs that are perfect for first-time fosters. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the perfect time to start!

06/08/2024

On May 27th, our dedicated Animal Services Officers responded to a report of two dogs in a backyard that appeared emaciated and without shelter. Upon arrival, they found two dogs chained to a fence, visibly skinny with their ribs showing, severe flystrike on their ears, and no shelter. The animal owner agreed to surrender the dogs and they were immediately impounded and brought them back to our shelter, where they were admitted to our vet clinic for treatment.

Despite their flystrike and weight issues, the dogs were otherwise healthy and soon became available for adoption. With a refeeding plan and medicated spray for their ears, these sweet pups are on the road to recovery. The dogs, now named Daphne and Simon, are slowly getting accustomed to the shelter environment. While both appear unsocialized in play groups with other dogs, they are gradually learning to open up and come out of their shells.

Daphne and Simon are perfect examples of the incredible work our departments do to save and change lives. We are thrilled to watch them blossom into the wonderful dogs they are meant to be. If you are interested in meeting these adorable doggies, visit them today at the KC Campus for Animal Care.

Let’s help Daphne and Simon find the loving homes they deserve!

🐾 Happy Foster Friday from Sumo! 🐾

This handsome hunk has been in a foster home for a while now, and unfortunately, his fosters only have a couple weeks left before they can no longer foster him. They would love to see this boy find his perfect home before then!

At 7 years old, Sumo is 125 lbs of tail-wagging, butt-wiggling, big-kissing goodness who is always up for a good belly rub. Sumo is definitely meant for the indoor life! When Sumo sits down, pins his ears back, and smiles at you with those big, beautiful brown eyes, it's very hard to resist his charm. He seems to have figured out that this pose usually results in a treat, so he does not hesitate to use it—this boy is a charmer!

Sumo knows commands like "stay," "lay down," "no," "get upstairs," and "let's go outside." Next to sleeping, eating is Sumo's favorite pastime. He loves his treats and will sit and take them gently from your hand. Don't let his age or size fool you—Sumo is a very happy, healthy, and youthful boy who will thrive in a safe, loving, and caring environment.

After being in a foster home, Sumo has his confidence back and shines like a star. All he needs is love, understanding, and patience, and he will be your best friend for life. He has previously done well with both cats and kids.

Sumo's foster family is offering 3 months of dog food, a $100 Petco gift card, and a bag of toys and treats to Sumo's adopters. If you are interested in meeting or adopting this amazing guy, email [email protected] today!

Did you know that our veterinary team performs around 40-50 spay/neuter surgeries a day? Yesterday, our amazing vet clinic team accomplished an incredible feat by performing 63 spay/neuter surgeries in just one day at our shelter! With the recent surge in intakes, our dedicated staff has been working tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of every pet that comes through our doors.

Our vet clinic staff works incredibly hard to spay and neuter every pet that is adopted from our shelter, performing around 10,000 surgeries a year. In addition to these surgeries, they handle medical emergencies, perform other types of surgeries, provide routine care for all the pets living at the shelter, manage their stress with medications, and so much more!

Today, we're asking for your help to continue providing these essential services. In total, 63 surgeries costs $6,804 and our goal is to raise an equivalent amount in donations for just one day of our work.
