On January 19th our Animal Services Officers found Horton unresponsive and abandoned in a home during the coldest part of our winter. He was found with another dog who unfortunately did not make it.
After being rushed to our shelter, our vet clinic team jumped into action to save Horton’s precious life. Hair dryers, blankets, and even slippers were placed on Horton to help his body temperature rise to a normal level. Little by little we started seeing signs of life. From slightly blinking, to making eye contact with one of our vets as she spoke words of encouragement to him, Horton was showing us that he was ready and willing to fight.
As time progressed, Horton not only regained consciousness but also eagerly consumed food, even though being still weak. After he was stable enough, we placed him on the floor of the vet clinic to closely monitor him throughout the rest of the day. Just a few days later, Horton is showing us his sweet personality and is well on his way to a full recovery.
We will fight for Horton just as he fought for his own life. Our Animal Services Division is pursuing criminal charges at the highest level.
You can help Horton during his recovery and all the pets in our vet clinic by donating to our Roadrunner Medical Fund. Visit https://donate.kcpetproject.org/give/60389/#!/donation/checkout to donate.

Pretty is loved by the community that she lives in. On Wednesday, Pretty was shot in the face at close range and arrived at KC Pet Project for emergency medical help. Our vet clinic team jumped into action to slow the bleeding and determine just how extensive the damage was. Her lower jaw was shattered and the bullet was still inside. They were able to get Pretty in stable condition, but her medical journey is far from over. She has been taken to Companion Animal Dentistry to undergo a specialty surgery to rebuild her jaw. This surgery will cost around $6,000. Our Animal Services team is investigating the case and are asking for the community to report any information on who did this to Pretty. We are currently asking for donations for our Roadrunner Medical Fund to help Pretty and all the pets that are currently in our vet clinic.
