Giving Grove

Giving Grove We help communities re-establish green space and provide free produce through urban orchards.

Our mission is to provide healthy calories, strengthen community, and improve the urban environment through a nationwide network of sustainable little orchards to dramatically increase access to healthy food. We envision:

-thousands of little orchards in food insecure urban neighborhoods across the nation;
-a system of local food production that feeds people for decades;
-a national network of

neighborhood stewards trained in holistic methods for growing fruit; and
-urban neighborhoods transformed by their own work and generosity. History:
In 2011, our founders tired of emergency food distribution embarked on a year of study to identify an alternative approach to building food security. They crafted a simple approach designed to make a big impact in neighborhoods that have the least access to healthy food. The โ€œlittle orchardโ€ concept was unveiled in 2012 as a program of Kansas City Community Gardens enabling us to share resources, jumpstart production and tap into an existing network. Having demonstrated successful orcharding locally, The Giving Grove became a separate charitable organization and piloted expansion regionally in 2017. The Giving Grove now has five affiliate cities and plans expansion into 15 more.

Did you catch this quarter's issue of The Serving (Giving Grove's quarterly newsletter)? This quarter, our Marketing & Communications Manager Sarah Sikich shared why June is the best month of the year and why her fellow orchard stewards should feel the same way. Here is a snippet...

๐ŸŒž"June is the best, and itโ€™s not because school is out and pools are open. Itโ€™s because June sits beautifully on the cusp between planting season and harvest season. Itโ€™s a time when new orchards have set their roots, and established orchards are beginning to bear fruit. The excitement of checking on our โ€œfruit babiesโ€ every day as they ripen is almost irresistible. It is a glorious time when pests are still at bay, and temperatures havenโ€™t quite soared yet. While it is easy to be anxious for fall harvests, learning to sit in this blissful anticipation is a gift to any orchard steward, especially to me."

๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ Apple and pear growers, beware! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Thanks to all this rain, fire blight is rearing its ugly head. We've heard from program managers and stewards about the symptoms to watch out for:

๐Ÿ” Tips of branches blacken and wilt, forming the shape of a shepherdโ€™s hook
๐Ÿ” Watery, light tan bacterial ooze exudes from cankers on branches, twigs, or trunks
๐Ÿ” Shriveled and blackened fruit

Found fire blight in your trees? Here's what to do:
โœ‚๏ธ Prune out all cankers from limbs over 1 inch in diameter. Cut apple limbs at least 8 inches below external evidence of the canker and 12 inches below for pear limbs.
โœ‚๏ธ If the infection reaches the leader/trunk in small trees (1-3โ€ diameter), remove the tree.
โœ‚๏ธ Pruning/removal should take place on the coolest and driest days possible.
โœ‚๏ธ Sanitize pruning equipment between trees and remove all pruning wood from the area.

Stay vigilant and protect your trees! More information can be found on our website.

Some useful advice from our partners in St. Louis. Thinning your fruit is one of the most important tasks to ensure a good harvest.

๐Ÿ It's time to get out there and thin the fruit on your fruit trees! Thinning should be done on pears, apples, and any stone fruit. Why thin? This is definitely a quality over quantity situation! If you don't manually pick off the excess fruit you will end up with very small fruit with very little of the flesh that you actually are going to eat.

๐ŸŽ A general rule of thumb is to leave one fruit per every 6 inches on the branch. Below you can see a comparison of apples from the same tree. The larger apple was on a branch where the fruit was thinned. The smaller apple came from a branch that had been missed when thinning. As you can see it can make a big difference!

June is almost here, and that means berry season! But keep an eye out for Spotted wing drosophila, an invasive fruit fly that targets soft fruits like berries and cherries. The larvae feed on ripening fruit, causing brown spots and a sour smell.

Here's how to protect your harvest:
๐Ÿ’ Remove old or damaged fruit to cut off their food source.
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ Prune plants to increase air circulation.
๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ Monitor with traps and refrigerate or process fruit right after harvesting.

Spinosad is an insecticide with the least environmental impact, if you need it. For easy-to-print guides on identifying and treating Spotted wing drosophila, visit our website! ๐Ÿ’

Last month at the American Academy of Family Physicians, board member Dr. Todd Moore facilitated a conversation with The Giving Grove, Special Olympics, and TRIO called โ€œEmpowering Family Physicians: Strengthening Community Engagement Through Strategic Partnershipsโ€. We were excited to share our experience as a growing organization and our unique collaborative partnerships. The goal of the presentation was to help chapter leaders and attendees engage their region and local communities to collectively contribute to the advancement of family medicine.

Thanks, Todd, for always advocating for the connection of community-based programs to all fields and uplifting the importance within health equity!
