Who can relate? 🐾

I sometimes find myself thinking about how my dog pulled me through. Not in any big, dramatic way, but in the quiet moments when life just felt too heavy. He didn’t need answers or advice to offer; he was just there, beside me, every single day. When I was worn out and ready to throw in the towel, he'd give me that little nudge, his eyes saying, "You’re okay. We’ve got this." And somehow, that was enough to keep going.

He never cared about the mistakes I made or judged me for falling short. He simply showed up, steady and loyal in a way you don’t always see in people.
There are days I wonder where I’d be without him—probably lost in my own chaos, tangled up in thoughts I can’t control. But he’s here, keeping me grounded in the simplest way. And that’s how he saved me,one day at a time, just by being there, exactly when I needed someone the most.

Today is the day to call your vet and request Trazadone for your pet, not Friday.
Please be prepared and have your dogs inside your home to keep them safe during the fireworks this Sunday.

Update: Morticia has been adopted!

Hi, my name is Morticia. I am a 3.5 year old spayed/female Chihuahua mix. No fault to me I was surrendered back to the shelter. My housemate and I really never bonded. We never fought, we just wouldn’t play like our momma wanted us to. I am still not housebroken, but I will use potty pads. I do like to chew up stuff that isn’t mine. I get along with dogs and cats. I am a little too nervous for kiddos. Come by and meet me.

Available near Boonville, MO. Reach out to Second Chance if interested. Let’s share Edgar’s post!

Available near Boonville, MO. Reach out to Second Chance if interested. Let’s share Edgar’s post!

Update; Edgar is meeting several adoring fans and will have a forever home hopefully soon!

Meet Edgar.

A dog who fits his name, Edgar is a crotchety old man. He isn’t even that old, at only 7 years old, but he is committed to fully embracing the crotchety angry old man vibe.

We say meet Edgar, but here is the thing. He doesn’t want to meet you. In fact if he could never meet anyone again, he’d be thrilled. If there were an island of no humans where dog food rained from the sky, Edgar would be it's ruler.

Edgar grew up in a hoarding situation with several other dogs who mostly lived outside, so his contact with humans was limited.

He has thus grown to prefer it this way.
If you try and touch him, he will notify you of his displeasure by barking at you in an attempt to get you to leave. If the auditory assault doesn’t work, he will attempt to bite you. If you persist despite these defense mechanisms because you enjoy a thrill, he will employ biological warfare in the shape of p*e or p**p. So seriously, just don’t touch him.

He does not want to be your friend. He does not want to cuddle. He wants you to leave the kibble and back away slowly.

Edgar also potties where he pleases. He has spent plenty of his life outside, why go back? Especially not in the snow. Going out to potty is beneath him and he will not stoop to it. Your kitchen floor is fine.

Despite all of this Edgar does have some positives. He does like other dogs and likely would do fine with cats. He eats well, and he keeps to himself. He is small, so at least his teeth are small and his messes are small. And how cool is it to have a dog who p**ps when you touch him? It’s like a button, right? Right?! And… that’s about it. But we tried.

We do believe with time and patience Edgar can make some progress (and he has, as his foster has been able to catch him as pictured)and we are looking for someone very stubborn … we mean patient… to work with him.

If you love hateful little dogs, head to our website to apply for Edgar. He is not excited to meet you.

🚨Attention Kansas City Animal Lovers🚨

We're receiving a high volume of calls and Facebook messages about welfare checks tonight. **If you send these concerns to us, please also contact Animal Control at (816) 683-1373.**

We are a small team of just 5 outreach workers with 3 vans. If one goes down, we’re left with only 2. Despite these limitations, we're working tirelessly to ensure that every dog we know is tied up outside has proper shelter and straw to survive these harsh conditions.

**Important:** We don’t have the legal authority to remove dogs from dangerous situations—**Animal Control does.** This weather qualifies as exigent circumstances, which means Animal Control can act to save lives. **You are their voice. Please call them.**

We also want to take a moment to wish the Animal Control officers safety and warmth as they do their critical work tonight.

Thank you for your continued support and advocacy for Kansas City's animals.

❌️THIS IS NO JOKE. THIS IS YOUR LAST FEW HOURS TO PREPARE FOR THE SNOW, ICE. WINDCHILL AND BLOW ZERO TEMPERATURES THAT WILL KILL.❌️

Protect Your Pets!

🐾 Bring Them Inside: Make plans to bring your pets indoors. Even a basement or garage will make a big difference in keeping them safe from the cold. Set up a temporary kennel indoors if needed.

🐾 Dog Houses: If you must use a doghouse, ensure it is filled with straw, not hay or blankets. Straw repels moisture, traps heat and provides better insulation to keep pets warm and dry. Make sure that it is an adequate doghouse built for winter. Straw is available at several stores in the area. If you need assistance with straw see the Clinton Animal Shelter staff today!

🐾 Limit Outdoor Time: In these temps it will be out to potty and back inside! Elderly pets, short-haired breeds, or those more vulnerable to the cold. While breeds like huskies are more tolerant of cold weather, no pet should stay outside. ALL pets are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia, particularly on their ears, legs, feet, paws, and stomachs. Monitor them closely and limit exposure to the cold.

🐾 Fresh Water and Food: Ensure pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water and food daily to maintain their energy and warmth.

🐾 Be Their Voice: If you see a pet not being properly cared for in the cold, say something! In Clinton, call 660-885-5561 to report a pet not being cared for properly.
That call could save a life.
