She picked a hot and humid night to lay eggs! At least I found them. This is her second year picking this rocky area to lay in. Now the waiting begins! Redfoot tortoise named Shelly! 😀

This is a lesser tenrec, originally from Madagascar. Although they look like a hedgehog, they are more closely related to elephants and aardvarks. They love to climb with their amazing grasping feet. I gave my little friend a new piece of cork bark to play in and very quickly he turned into a little demon! Not really! Males produce a secretion in their eyes when they become excited! It’s just a little creepy looking!

This guy looks so disappointed! He loves crawling under the deck so much, that he broke through the lattice work! I fixed it so now he’s looking for another way in. He’ll make one! strong!

Made a nice naturalistic enclosure for one of my young Dominican Red Mountain Boas and all he does is crush the plants and rearrange everything! Glad he’s making himself at home!

As my large snakes get older, I like to start raising up younger snakes to work with. This beautiful Suriname red tailed boa is not quite 1 year old and doing great. Also a yearling hypo Burmese python is really outgoing. These two are awesome in person!

How appropriate for International Women’s Day! We had the opportunity to share some exciting animals with the all-Girls school, Sion High School. What a great group of students and a lot of fun…and a lot of pink! Definitely not my color but so great seeing their interest!

The next time you pick up a shoe to kill a creepy crawlie, keep this in mind. This is a pair of harmless Emperor scorpions I bred several years ago. They just had babies. They give live birth and mom will protect them by letting them ride around on her back. She will defend them and even kill prey and hold it over her head to let the babies come down and eat. Both parents were very agitated at me when I took this picture! They sound like awesome parents don’t they? Next time, just help your creepy crawlie back outside! 😀. Maria McNerney Knowles

This girl has an entire yard full of flower gardens and she chose this rocky corner to lay her eggs! And it was so dark! But the eggs are pretty big. The wait begins! My poor wife was out there helping me with a headlamp on. For better or for worse! 😀

These are such a cool lizards! You can certainly see how they got their name!😀 Blue tongue skinks range throughout parts of Indonesia and Australia. One is a Kei Island Blue Tongue, Tiliqua gigas keyensis, that doesn’t look too happy being outside for a picture. They are found only on a small group of islands and are unique. The other is a Northern Blue Tongue, Tiliqua scincoides intermedia, showing off her tongue. This species is found in Australia and this girl was produced by Cheryl Matula several years ago. Very friendly and great ambassadors for reptiles!

Happy World Snake Day! I hope everyone has an awesome day and learns just a little about our legless friends. Most are harmless and all play an important role in the environment. They control lots of pests and are important food for other predators. We are also producing valuable medicines from some of their venom. So put that shovel down and give them a hand! Because the don’t have hands!😀
