Al Robertson might be the first police recruit at KCPD nicknamed “Grandpa.” In fact, he might be the first actual grandpa.

At 58, Robertson is in our police academy training to be an officer. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving 28 years, but his duty to community equals his commitment to his country.

“I can’t sit there and complain about crime being bad if I’m not willing to do something about it myself,” Robertson explained. “I know I’m just one person, and I can’t do everything, but I can do something. This is my community.”

Growing up in Kansas City’s Columbus Park neighborhood, Robertson admired the officers who served his area. It was a newer officer more recently, however, that encouraged Robertson to fulfill his lifelong goal.

“You’re never too old,” Robertson said. “Put your mind to it and your heart into it.”
