Happy Friday! ☀️Today's Aquatic Species Spotlight (A.S.S.) is focused on Percula Clownfish.

Percula Clownfish
Amphiprion percula, or the common clownfish, is a very popular fish in the aquarist hobby. They are brightly colored and are very active swimmers making them fun to watch move around the tank. Percula clownfish are native to the indo-pacific region.

Here is everything you need to know to care for your Percula clownfish:
Lifespan- 10+ years
Size- 2-3 inches
Temperature- 74-80℉
pH- 8-8.4
Diet- omnivorous
These clowns will enjoy flakes or pellet foods, but they also enjoy frozen or live foods as well.

Tank requirements- minimum 20 gallons
Bigger is usually always better when it comes to fish keeping, but the Percula clownfish can do quite well in a relatively small tank. As long as they have a host anemone they should be happy.
In the wild Percula clownfish require an anemone to live, but captive bred species do not. Providing one in your tank is still beneficial to them as they will have a place to hide and possibly lay eggs.
Given that these fish prefer a host anemone ample water movement and lighting is required.

Tank mates-
Percula clownfish are very versatile and can go with most saltwater fish as long as they are not too big or aggressive. Damsels, tangs, wrasses, blennies, angelfish, and dartfish are just a few that make good tankmates for them.
Clownfish can be kept together, however this is said with caution. While many times clowns will pair up as mates, they can still be aggressive to one another if the introduction is not done well.

Kribensis Cichlid
Pelvicachromis pulcher, is a dwarf cichlid that was named for its brightly colored underbelly. These beautiful fish are native to areas of Nigeria and Cameroon in Africa. In their natural habitat these fish tolerate a variety of water parameters, making them a relatively versatile and hardy fish.

Here is everything you need to know to care for your Kribensis cichlid:

Lifespan- up to 5 years
Size- 3-4 inches
Temperature- 75-77℉
pH- 6.5-7
Diet- Omnivore

Kribensis cichlids are not picky when it comes to eating, and therefore they should be given a variety of foods. Fish flakes or pellets, frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, or even vegetables like zucchini will do.

Tank requirements- minimum of 20 gallons

These fish love dense vegetation and plenty of places to hide. In their natural habitat they are cave dwellers.
They may dig in the substrate so consider this if including live plants in the tank.

Tank mates-
Kribensis cichlids are generally peaceful, but still should not be housed with slower moving fish as they can nip their fins. Likewise they should not be housed with more aggressive cichlid species.

Avoid housing them with other bottom dwelling or cave dwelling species to avoid territorial behavior.

Happy Wednesday! ☀️Today's Aquatic Species Spotlight (A.S.S.) is focused on Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi)

Neocaridina davidi are native to China and Taiwan and get the common name, cherry shrimp, for their bright red coloration. Because they eat leftover fish food and algae, they make excellent clean up crews! Cherry shrimp are relatively hardy and can tolerate a range of parameters. Here is everything you need to know to care for your cherry shrimp:

Lifespan- less than 2 years
Size- 3-4cm
Temperature- 72-76℉
pH- 6.5-8
Diet- detritivores

Cherry shrimp will naturally feed on algae and other decaying matter in the tank, but it is important to also feed them shrimp specific diets. This ensures they obtain all the necessary minerals they need for their exoskeletons.

Tank requirements-
Cherry shrimp are ideal for nano tanks 2 gallons or larger, but a breeding colony could also thrive in tanks much, much larger as well making them very versatile pets.

Cherry shrimp love plants and wood in their environment.
These shrimp are very sensitive to metals, especially copper, so be aware when adding chemicals to the tank.

Tank mates-
Most fish will prey on baby or smaller sized shrimp. If cherry shrimp are to be housed with fish it is important to only house them with other “nano” or small fish. Chili rasboras, otocinclus catfish, or pygmy cory cats should be okay to house with cherry shrimp.

Snails and other small shrimp species are the best tank mates for cherry shrimp.
