Having access to forage 24/7 is not only ideal it is a healthy option we personally recommend for the majority of horses.
Health issues definitely can arise if a horse lacks access to forage for the time period of 4 hours or more.

More than four hours without feed is fasting for a horse and can lead to issues.

Meet Beautiful River

River is a Grade 14 yr (vet aged) Sorrel Roan Quarter Horse Mare. Approximately 14.1 Hands and physically healthy and sound.
She has been vetted and is current on all vaccinations, deworming & farrier care.
She and another mare were purchased/rescued by us. She was hours away (being held in Texas) from her final destination of a Mexico slaughter plant.

She will be/is starting our trauma informed rehabilitation training program. This has been chosen for her after careful evaluation, training progress/regression and getting to know her needs.

River has unfortunately had past abuse, neglect and trauma and at the hands of “horse people”.
She has huge trust issues with new people and places.

When she knows she is safe she is a “in your pocket” type horse. She is the first to meet you at the gate. She will stand “forever” receiving love and affection.
She has never shown us a mean gesture.

She has had 60 days of professional training. She is now going into a more structured trauma informed training and care plan.
Current status as of 1/1/2024:
She stands quite good for her feet/farrier, grooming, etc.
She leads, lunges, ties and trailer loads.
Vices: can become very very anxious and nervous in new situations and with new environments. Can become anxious if left alone in pasture.
Does not ride and will try and buck a saddle off.

River will be available only to a qualified loving permanent home that can meet her needs and willing to sign a contract.
The new must be will be willing to follow her ongoing trauma informed care and recovery plan.

Because she is a special needs rescue she will stay with us and continue training and care until we are certain she has been matched with the right home.
We will be very selective in her adoption.

Her rescue and rehabilitation has been financially supported by us privately.
We are not a 501c nonprofit.

However, we are hopeful that there are other individuals like us who want to help these animals who are in danger and need.

PM us for opportunities to financially sponsor River.
The funding will be for her ongoing boarding, feed/hay, healthcare, training, transportation, etc.
You can support animals at risk for abuse and neglect by donating to specific funds.
Please pm if you have a preference to where your donation goes. We will do everything to ensure it is used for that specific purpose.
If an area of support is not specified we will use the funds for the most needed area.

Our mission and journey becomes reality as we try & help horses, donkeys and mules live free from abuse, neglect and a “death sentence” by slaughter.
These two beautiful horses were destined to be destroyed as they awaited their grim fate at the Texas-Mexico border.
They amongst so many others ended up in the slaughter pipeline into Mexico.
We got them out in time!
We look forward to updating you on their journey!
