Life can get hectic sometimes, leaving you with less quality time to spend with your #woof. Whether there are health-related issues or another pressing matter. We’ve all been there. 🐶
You may feel guilty about it but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed with some extra lovin and a treat once things quiet down again! 🥰

Grab a pen and paper, we’re about to throw a big vocabulary word at you! 📝
Vomeronasal
(Say that 5 times quickly!!)
Class is back in session with Professor Barkman! He’s going to explain what the heck Vomeronasal means. We know that’s a mouthful so we’ll just call it the Jacobson organ.
The Jacobson organ detects pheromones which play a part in attracting mates, communicating feelings of distress, and even strengthening bonds between mother and pups. Dogs can even detect certain diseases, oncoming seizures, and low blood sugar which makes them fantastic service animals, police companions, and assets to search and rescue teams!!
Did you know that a #dogs smelling power can extend to up to 1.6 miles away? 😳

In the kingdom of dog senses, the olfactory bulb reigns supreme! 👑
As promised, Professor Barkman is back to continue our lesson on our #woofs sense of smell! 📚
Neuroscience tells us the olfactory bulb is a piece of tissue within the brains of humans and dogs that helps us to collect information via smell! A dog’s olfactory bulb is 40 times larger than a human’s. While humans mostly perceive the world around them through sight, dogs perceive things through their sense of smell.
However, all noses are not created equal! 👃 Not all dog breeds have the same smelling power! Brachycephalic (short-nosed dogs such as bulldogs and pugs) have a weaker sense of smell though it is still stronger than humans.
That’s all for now! Stay tuned for part 3 of this lesson!

Part 4: 5 Reasons that We Should Avoid Adverse Training Devices.
🦴 Why take the unnecessary risk of creating NEW unwanted behaviors?📚
Studies have shown that adverse training devices can cause your dog to develop new unwanted behaviors such as aggression. You want to avoid this as it puts you AND your dog’s lives at risk. In your research you may find contrary information but why would you want to risk it? We’re looking up training methods so that we can bring out the BEST version of our woofs!

From fetching sticks to army fatigues! Sergeant Daphne has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? 🫡
She even finds time in her busy schedule for freelance videography with that GoPro! 🎥

Part 3: 5 Reasons that We Should Avoid Adverse Training Devices.
🦴 We do our best with the wisdom we have now, and redirect toward better paths as we learn more! 📚
When choosing to add a new fur child to our pack we do a lot of preparation and research on how we can give them the very best. Sometimes we do believe we are doing what’s right for them and then realize that there are better options out there! This is why we call them Wise Woofs, they help us learn along the way!

Part 2: 5 Reasons that We Should Avoid Adverse Training Devices.
🦴 These devices teach your dog to suppress behaviors out of fear instead of addressing the underlying reasons causing the behavior.
Did you know that your dog experiences complex emotions just like you do? Your dog’s behaviors come from these emotions that are driven by their perceptions and thoughts. Happy emotions lead to the production of dopamine and serotonin( linked to the brain’s “reward center”) which aid in long-term learning. Rewards while learning lead to happy feelings while pain leads to a stress response.
Serotonin and dopamine pave the way for top-notch #doggy learning!! 📚
🎊 Special recognition to @denise_fenzi for helping teach us more about this important topic!!
