With all this snow this is a good reminder to make sure to keep your dogs brushed & combed out after coming in from the snow. Those snowballs can cause a lot of trouble!
Snow Day PSA: Comb out your doodles and other dogs with high maintenance coats each time you come back indoors from playing in the snow!
When your dog gets snow in their coat and then comes back inside, that snow melts, getting their hair wet, and then dries... locking in each and every knot and mat a little bit more every time. If this happens frequently, mats can become so tight that they continuously pull on your pet's skin causing pain, bruising, etc.
Have you ever accidentally washed and dried a knot into the drawstring on your clothes? Picture that, but all over your pet's fur! OUCH!
Make sure to run a comb through your pet's fur when it is still wet to get any tangles out, and then use a slicker brush to grab any dead fur out of their coat.
If you can't easily run a comb through your pet's fur from right next to the skin to the very tip of their fur... it's probably matted or tangled somewhere in there!
If this sounds overwhelming, try breaking down your pet's coat into sections. Give a quick once over to the areas that are immersed in the snow or have a high amount of friction (under your pet's collar/harness) and then comb one section of your pet's hair each day until you've gotten through their entire coat each week!
Need help? Head to your local groomer for a cut so you can get a fresh start... but don't be surprised if your pet needs a shave down for their safety and comfort!
Do you have a pic of your freshly combed out pet? I'd love to see it!
Have fun and stay warm! Share this tip with all your doodle friends!
