As a dog lover and avid sportsmen I have spent my whole life around hunting retrievers. My early experience stems from the first Platte Valley Retrievers, a large kennel my parents operated throughout the 90's. They specialized in well bred retrievers including Labradors, Chesapeake's, and Golden's. My passion for working with these animals grew over time and now I am doing it professionally. The

facilities are safe, clean, and about 30 yds from my house so the dogs are under constant supervision. I specialize in gun dog training and hunt test training. Basic gun dog training is a minimum of four months, maybe longer depending on the individual dog. By the end of the training program the retriever will be obedient to the command and to the whistle. They will retrieve marked birds up to 100 yds away and will deliver them to hand. They will also be able to pass a HRC Started Hunt Test. My fee is $650/month for a minimum 4 month training program.

Retriever training that focuses on the basics. Including; obedience, retrieving desire, and delivery to hand. Located near Kearney, NE we are a small kennel that focuses on quality over quantity. We only take on six gun dogs at a time so that you can be confident your retriever will get the attention it needs to build the hunting companion you want. Mallie is working her way through the double T drill. In this run she was supposed to stop and take a “ back” cast and then stop and take a left “over” cast. As you can see she needs more work on “back” cast. But this is normal progress through this drill. She is doing very well. What we want most is to maintain “momentum” while refining “precision” and getting the correct casts.

Moved from the T drill to the Double T. One of my favorite drills. After a few weeks of this their handling skills really start to reach another level

Labs are tough. This is one of my personal dogs that gets to run part of our acreage with underground wire fence collar. Started running drills with her and she was so energetic, excited and acted like nothing was wrong that i barely noticed this wound. Don’t know how it happened. Probably caught on a fence while she was making circles around our chicken coop.

On the plus side the veterinarian said my emergency staple job was so good that they didn’t even need to do anything just gave me some meds and sent me home. she still doesn’t act like there is anything wrong

This is my favorite method for introduction to the gunshot. Once we have finished “delivery to hand” training and have gotten a little progress on steadiness we introduce the gunshot. I use bumper launcher that uses .22 caliber blanks to launch the bumper. It is very load and is just like a gunshot. I am able to start a long ways away from the launcher where the sound is much less and depending on the dogs reaction I will slowly get closer during the training session, until we are able to be right next to the “gun”. Sometimes this takes a week, sometimes a couple days. Just depends on the dog.

Morning routine, boys go out in one yard, girls in another. Empty water buckets, scoop up solids, hang up beds, pick up food bowls, spray disinfectant, rinse out kennels, fill water buckets, and let dry.
