Karnes County Humane Organization

Karnes County Humane Organization KCHO coordinates Rescue transport & medical care for abandoned dogs in Karnes County Animal Control facilities. Fostering & Adoption available.

The Karnes County Humane Organization serves Karnes County, Texas from our facility in Kenedy, a small town 60 miles southeast of San Antonio. Through the efforts and hard work of KCHO volunteers, abandoned and abused dogs & cats are brought to the attention of rescue groups or adoptive homes through our website, www.KarnesCountyHumane.org and this page. KCHO is not a shelter facility, bu

t works to place dogs & cats in safe rescues and shelters. We have enjoyed great success in our outreach. Before the creation of KCHO, the rural town shelter had no resources, and the live release rate was typically 5% out of 275 dogs per year. Standard hold time is 72 hours. The live release rate has now increased to 99%! RELEASE TO RESCUE GROUPS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. The Karnes County Humane Organization provides each homeless pet with medical care that includes vaccinations, spaying/neutering and heartworm testing at no cost to the rescue. In most instances we are available to assist with transport! Rescue Groups, Potential Foster "Parents" and those wanting to Adopt, please call Rhonda Sheeran (830) 299-1716 for information. Every year, about 100,000 dogs die because they ride in the back of trucks. And that’s just the number of dogs that die—even more get badly hurt.

Truck beds don’t protect dogs from the weather. On hot days, the metal floor can get so hot it burns their paws or skin. If a dog is left in the sun without water or shade, it can get heatstroke very quickly.

Even though dogs might look happy with the wind in their faces, dirt, dust, and other stuff in the air can hurt their eyes, ears, and lungs.

Never tie your dog to the truck bed. If the dog falls or jumps out, it could get strangled by the leash. This can happen in an accident or even if the dog just tries to jump out.

If your dog has to ride in the back of a truck, put it in a crate. Make sure the crate is tied down tightly so it can’t move around or fall out. Cover the crate with a weather appropriate cloth to protect your dog from the wind and weather.

We come to you today asking for help
Meet Linus.
Linus was surrendered to us along with his two sisters after his elderly mother was no longer able to care for them and then they were left with someone the family trusted but clearly were not cared for the way they should have been.
All 3 are very overweight and have severe matting (a lot of their fur had to be shaved to help with the matting.) Each cat was very, very nervous when they first came to the reacue. His sisters have come around and done fairly well so far but Linus is struggling. He’s very shy, and very nervous but extremely sweet.
We are looking for a foster who is willing to work with him. He will need someone who is willing to be patient and give him the love, time and space he needs.
As much as we are able to love each animal in our care, Linus needs someone who can give him some dedicated one on one time.
We would prefer a home quiet home with no dogs or gentle dogs as we are unsure of how he will react to a super active dog. And we would prefer he either be the only cat in the home or atleast have a quiet, comfortable room he can be in while he is worked with.
He has been fully vetted and all foster supplies will be provided to you.
If you feel you are a good foster fit, please reach send us a direct message.

*Linus is not currently up for adoption*

We have had a few of our babies find their FURever home recently and we wanted to share their success with you.
They are finally able to snuggle up in their very own beds and expericence love from their forever families.
This all happens because of those who volunteer, foster and donate to our organization.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for continuing to support our cause. It’s not always easy but it is always worth it. 🤍
