Karnes County Humane Organization

Karnes County Humane Organization KCHO coordinates Rescue transport & medical care for abandoned dogs in Karnes County Animal Control facilities. Fostering & Adoption available.

The Karnes County Humane Organization serves Karnes County, Texas from our facility in Kenedy, a small town 60 miles southeast of San Antonio. Through the efforts and hard work of KCHO volunteers, abandoned and abused dogs & cats are brought to the attention of rescue groups or adoptive homes through our website, www.KarnesCountyHumane.org and this page. KCHO is not a shelter facility, bu

t works to place dogs & cats in safe rescues and shelters. We have enjoyed great success in our outreach. Before the creation of KCHO, the rural town shelter had no resources, and the live release rate was typically 5% out of 275 dogs per year. Standard hold time is 72 hours. The live release rate has now increased to 99%! RELEASE TO RESCUE GROUPS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. The Karnes County Humane Organization provides each homeless pet with medical care that includes vaccinations, spaying/neutering and heartworm testing at no cost to the rescue. In most instances we are available to assist with transport! Rescue Groups, Potential Foster "Parents" and those wanting to Adopt, please call Rhonda Sheeran (830) 299-1716 for information. EMAIL: [email protected]

We always need more funding than we have! Monetary donations, as well as pet supply donations and volunteer time are always appreciated ! We are a 501c3, so your gift is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

We would like to take a moment to introduce Scooter. Scooter came to us after we received a call about a cat who had made her way onto her finders lawn and was dragging both legs. Although we don’t have the space, nor the funds to care for a paralyzed cat, Scooter appeared to be the picture of perfect health aside from the obvious so we couldnt bring ourseleves to turn her away. She has no drag marks on her skin so whatever happened to her, happened recently. We had X-rays done and were thrilled to hear that she has no broken bones. But that leaves a mystery for us. We have no idea what has caused Scooter to lose her ability to walk but she does have feeling and movement in both legs so we have hope that she will regain what she has lost. We will need to do physical therapy and red light therapy for her to see if we can help her walk again.
With all of this care will come cost.
Our rescue has put all of our resources toward hundreds of animals this year alone. We are struggling. Please donate to Scooter and her friends at kcho if you are able. We want to continue helping the innocent animals who need us.

Dear Santa, please look after every animal without a home tonight, especially the quiet ones who curl into themselves against the cold. I think of small hearts beating bravely through hunger and fear, still hoping that kindness might find them before the night grows too long. They don’t ask for miracles, only warmth, food, and a gentle place where they can finally rest.

As Christmas draws near, I hold onto the hope that love can travel farther than we imagine. Somewhere beyond the Rainbow Bridge, I believe the ones who never found safety here are finally at peace. And here on earth, I keep wishing that compassion will reach those still waiting, because no soul should have to face the cold alone.

A huge thank you to the 4H County Council members for spending some time getting our dogs out yesterday!!

A cute puppy or kitten isn’t a disposable gift that can be put away and forgotten.
PLEASE, if you’re considering gifting a pet to ANYONE, consider the daily emotional, pragmatic, logistical and financial responsibilities involved with that gift:

Healthy, appropriate and consistent food
Fresh, clean water daily
Safe, clean, dry, warm or cool (as weather dictates) shelter
Play and exercise
Appropriate vet care
Patience
Love

We need your help! This is just one of the many invoices we have had to pay for serious medical help within the last few months. Our funds are getting low and we cannot continue to help without the ability to pay for health care and general operations!
