Karnes County Humane Organization

Karnes County Humane Organization KCHO coordinates Rescue transport & medical care for abandoned dogs in Karnes County Animal Control facilities. Fostering & Adoption available.

The Karnes County Humane Organization serves Karnes County, Texas from our facility in Kenedy, a small town 60 miles southeast of San Antonio. Through the efforts and hard work of KCHO volunteers, abandoned and abused dogs & cats are brought to the attention of rescue groups or adoptive homes through our website, www.KarnesCountyHumane.org and this page. KCHO is not a shelter facility, bu

t works to place dogs & cats in safe rescues and shelters. We have enjoyed great success in our outreach. Before the creation of KCHO, the rural town shelter had no resources, and the live release rate was typically 5% out of 275 dogs per year. Standard hold time is 72 hours. The live release rate has now increased to 99%! RELEASE TO RESCUE GROUPS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. The Karnes County Humane Organization provides each homeless pet with medical care that includes vaccinations, spaying/neutering and heartworm testing at no cost to the rescue. In most instances we are available to assist with transport! Rescue Groups, Potential Foster "Parents" and those wanting to Adopt, please call Rhonda Sheeran (830) 299-1716 for information. KCHO wants your Rummage Sale Items!

KCHO will be holding a Rummage Sale to raise funds for our continued mission and helping the cats and dogs in our care! As you do your spring cleaning, please keep us in mind.

Drop-off items you would like to donate at Dynasty Enterprises 105 S Sunset Strip in Kenedy Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:00 pm.

The criteria for donations are simple: clean, unbroken, sellable items and if possible, boxing like-items together would be helpful (for example, tools in one box, kitchen items in another, etc.)

Thank you for your continued support! 💚🐾💚

🌧️🐾 Public Service Announcement: Attention, Pet Owners! 🐾🌧️

Dear community members,

As we anticipate the arrival of severe weather conditions, including tropical storms, this week, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of our beloved furry friends - our pets.

During times of severe weather, it is imperative that you take proactive measures to ensure the protection and comfort of your pets. Please remember to bring them indoors to provide them with proper shelter and security.

Our pets rely on us for their safety and care, especially during challenging weather events. By bringing them inside, you can shield them from potential dangers and keep them safe and secure throughout the storm.

Let's come together as a community to show compassion and responsibility towards our pets. Remember, they are not just animals; they are cherished members of our families who deserve our love and protection.

Thank you for your attention and for taking the necessary steps to safeguard the well-being of your pets during this period of severe weather. Together, we can ensure the safety and happiness of our furry companions.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and keep your pets close!

We would like to take a minute to address a few things that have been brought to our attention.

The Karnes County Humane Organization is a donation based RESCUE.
We are limited on funding which comes from DONATIONS.
We are not funded by any kind of local government, we just run on donations from kind people who support and believe in our cause.
We work incredibly hard to help the innocent animals who help in our area.
WE ARE NOT A BUSINESS WITH A STEADY INCOME!!!!
We do our best with the limited resources we have.
We don't need bitter people bashing us while ewe are trying to save innocent lives.
Many of us have full time jobs, families and other things we deal with in addition to DONATING OUR TIME AND MONEY to keep this rescue going and to keep saving lives.
If you don't like what our organization represents or how we operate, keep it to yourself or maybe you could find something better to do with your time.

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO SUPPPORT OUR MISSION AND RESCUE, WE LITERALLY COULD NOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Have a great day!

Our cat intake is closed. We have absolutely no more room left. If you find a cat or kittens and ask for help from us, be prepared to foster. We understand that it’s difficult for many people to do, but we don’t have a choice right now.
There is only so much we can do sometimes and we are at the point where we need to put the safety and health of the cats who are currently in our care, first.
Thank you for understanding.

Faith- 1 yr old Kelpie mix - 50 lbs.

Hi my name is Faith! With a medium energy level, I love being outside and rolling around in the grass enjoying the great outdoors. I am happy to sit next to you and take in the views. I didn’t let it stop me when I had to have my front leg amputated from an old injury. I walk great on a leash, am dog friendly, love playing with toys and I’m okay with cats as long as they're not left unattended.

I am a healthy girl, current on all my vaccinations, negative heartworm test and I have been spayed! I am a happy go lucky girl seeking a forever home where I can show my unconditional love and devotion every day to my new best friend, possibly you!

“With warmer weather, many of us will spend more time outdoors with our pets. Camping trips, pool parties, beach days and barbecues are just a few of the ways people might like to enjoy the heat—and often times we want our furry friends to join us. To give you and your best pals the best summer ever, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has created a list of four Summer Safety Tips so that you can safely enjoy your summer activities.” ~ ASPCA.org

“Never, ever leave a child alone with your new dog. Not even for a second to turn your head and answer the phone. The type of relationship we see on TV between children and dogs is a fantasy, and not a reflection of what real dogs can be like with children.

No one in the family should be encouraging rough play, wrestling, or the dog to play with his mouth on human body parts or clothes. This is especially relevant when an adult member of the household plays with the dog in this manner, because when the child next excites the dog, the dog may be stimulated to play in the same rough manner, thereby putting the child at risk for injury.

Your dog should be fed his meals in an area completely protected from and away from children, as much for a bit of peace and privacy as it is to prevent guarding behaviors. The dog should also be fed portions that are quickly finished, so there is nothing left in the bowl for the dog to linger over and guard. Empty bowls should be taken up and put away, so the dog won’t consider guarding the feeding area.” ~ National Rescue Dog Day

05/20/2024

“Once home, take him to his toileting area immediately and spend a good amount of time with him so he will get used to the area and relieve himself. Even if your dog does relieve himself during this time, be prepared for accidents. Coming into a new home with new people, new smells and new sounds can throw even the most housebroken dog off-track, so be ready just in case.

From there, start your schedule of feeding, toileting, and play/exercise. From Day One, your dog will need family time and brief periods of solitary confinement. Don’t give in and comfort him if he whines when left alone. Instead, give him attention for good behavior, such as chewing on a toy or resting quietly” ~ National Rescue Dog Day

05/20/2024

“We know moving is stressful — and your new dog feels the same way! Give him time to acclimate to your home and family before introducing him to strangers. Make sure children know how to approach the dog without overwhelming him.

When you pick up your dog, remember to ask what and when he was fed. Replicate that schedule for at least the first few days to avoid gastric distress. If you wish to switch to a different brand, do so over a period of about a week by adding one part new food to three parts of the old for several days; then switch to half new food, half old, and then one part old to three parts new.“ ~ National Dog Rescue Day
