Stay@Home provides resources to families and pets, including pet food, low-cost or complimentary veterinary care, temporary boarding and supplies, in an effort to keep pets and families together during times of financial hardship. Additional community programs, such as Humane Education and Canine Training bring education, training and lessons to countless community members of all ages each year. AWS’ operations, adoption center, programs and services are supported by a staff of more than 35 full- and part-time employees and a team of more than 150 dedicated volunteers. Volunteers donate more than 36,000 hours of their time annually in the Adoption Center, in the Veterinary Clinic and in their own homes as foster families. We are able to fulfill our mission through the generosity of those who contribute through financial gifts, in-kind support and bequests. These funds go directly toward the care of the animals at the shelter and to programs that benefit the people and animals in our communities.

Kitty and Midnight are two cats waiting to find their new families to spend their golden years with! Each of these sweet gals enjoy some good neck scratches, treats and cat naps. Either cat could be your new feline friend!
We’re still waiting for more snow on the ground, but we know that in a Maine winter there could be a snow at any point! While many dogs love to run and roll around in the snow, it can also be a great time to play some games with your dog for enrichment and training purposes.
There may not be much snow on the ground currently, but the extremely cold temperatures can still have an impact on your pets! Exposure to these extreme temperatures, dry air, sleet, snow and much more can all have negative effects for animals. Keep your pets cozy, warm and safe this winter with some of these tips.
Hi everyone! My name is Reef and my friends at AWS are letting me takeover our Facebook and Instagram stories today to tell you all about the fun ways I spend my time here!
Be sure to follow along all day to keep up with all of the fun during my Takeover Tuesday!
Hi everyone, my name is Penny. It's nice to meet you! I’m a five-year-old rabbit here at AWS who is looking for a new home. But I can be a little particular! My friends here at AWS have chosen me as the Pet of the Week this week so I can share what in particular that I'm looking for in my new home.
We're celebrating the day with our available Parakeets that are looking to find their new homes! They're one of the most popular pet bird species in the world, and for good reason. These birds love to sing, dance and spend time with their people!
"My fiancé and I adopted Flint now known as Gus back in 2020. He is a petite little guy but FULL of personality and he always has something to say! (Especially when I open the fridge) Him and I “Talk” to each other. We just love our little guy❤️"
Loui closed out 2024 with an absolutely awesome dog date. He’d love to open 2025 with a new family to love! Start out the new year by bringing home a new friend, like Loui! If your resolution is more snuggles, then Loui is the guy for you.
Hi everyone, my name is Pal and it’s so nice to meet you! I am a fun and playful eight-year-old dog here at AWS waiting to meet my new family. My friends at AWS told me that they chose me to be this week’s Pet of the Week, and I am so happy to tell you why I could be your new best Pal!

Kikyo now Oliver:
"I adopted Oliver 6/23. He is the sweetest boy ever! He loves to play fetch with me, play with his brother Snoop doggy dog, beg me for kitty treats and cuddle with me on my chest. He always has to be the center of attention, if I am watching tv instead of paying attention to him he will disconnect the internet. (Yes, he has taught himself how to do that) 🤣
Thank you AWS for making it possible for Snoop and I to enrich our lives with our bestest, beloved Ollie 💕"
Mice may not commonly be thought of as pets, but they make great ones! They offer an easy pet care experience and could be the perfect addition to your family. We currently have mice waiting to find their new homes! 🐭
A special thank you to Mrs. Rivard's 2nd grade class for supporting AWS with their wonderful donation! From towels and blankets to toys and treats, each student's contribution helps AWS continue to support the animals of our community.
During this joyful time of year, be sure to remember to keep your pets in mind! There are plenty of common items around the holiday season that can be hazardous to your animals.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
