Animal Welfare Society

Animal Welfare Society AWS provides humane shelter, veterinary care, education and resources to pets and community members.

The Animal Welfare Society exists to serve as the safety net for lost and homeless pets and to provide access to affordable services and resources necessary for long term wellbeing so pets and their families stay together and thrive. To achieve this mission, AWS operates a progressive animal shelter and adoption center on a 40 acre campus in Kennebunk and satellite adoption centers throughout nort

hern New England. AWS’ life-saving community programs include Pets and Survivors to Safety, Paws in Stripes and Paws Across America. AWS’ services to the greater community include Youth Programs, Behavior and Training classes, spay/neuter assistance through the Cleo Fund, veterinary and wellness care at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic and community resources through Stay@Home. AWS serves as the animal control impound facility for 21 municipalities in York County, providing safety and shelter to lost and abandoned pets. Annually, more than 4,000 animals receive care – and find new homes – at AWS. The AWS Community Veterinary Clinic provided wellness services, including surgeries, examinations and vaccinations to nearly 8,500 pets of community members, in addition to AWS resident pets. Stay@Home provides resources to families and pets, including pet food, low-cost or complimentary veterinary care, temporary boarding and supplies, in an effort to keep pets and families together during times of financial hardship. Additional community programs, such as Humane Education and Canine Training bring education, training and lessons to countless community members of all ages each year. AWS’ operations, adoption center, programs and services are supported by a staff of more than 35 full- and part-time employees and a team of more than 150 dedicated volunteers. Volunteers donate more than 36,000 hours of their time annually in the Adoption Center, in the Veterinary Clinic and in their own homes as foster families. We are able to fulfill our mission through the generosity of those who contribute through financial gifts, in-kind support and bequests. These funds go directly toward the care of the animals at the shelter and to programs that benefit the people and animals in our communities.

"Where are you going? I'm not ready to let you stop petting me yet!"

Toast is a young, friendly girl looking for a new home. There are lots of things that make Toast special. One thing especially is that she's polydactyl. That means she has lots of extra toe beans!

She's used to being an indoor/outdoor cat so she'd be happiest with access to the outdoors in her new home. However, like all pets from AWS, she has been spayed, so no more surprise litters for Mama Toast. She is a sweet and loving gal who has enjoyed attention and affection from her foster family and our staff at AWS. She'll make a sweet, lively, enjoyable and wonderful addition to her new home. Stop by and adopt Toast!

It’s not just our licensed veterinary technicians we celebrated this week.
AWS’ Community Veterinary Clinic could not operate without the work and dedication of all our Clinic staff, including veterinarians, technicians, assistants, and administrative staff. We want to honor their hard work and thank each of them for their passion, professionalism, and proficiency. They help us achieve our mission of keeping pets happy, healthy, and at home with their families! THANK YOU!

The third week of October (this week!) is National Veterinarian Technician Week. Started by the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1993, the week commemorates the vital and professional role veterinary technicians play in diagnosing, treating and caring for animals.

We’ve asked our Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) to share with us what is the best part of the job and what is something that public might not know about their work. Today we meet Dottie!

Dottie has 25 years of experience in veterinary medicine and joined AWS part-time earlier this year.
“My favorite two things about being a licensed veterinary technician are trying to make each pet’s vet visit as stress free as possible and in the operating room, monitoring anesthesia. One thing the public might not know about this career is that we do a lot of math! From dispensing medication to monitoring anesthesia, like I mentioned before, math is a regular part of our job!”

We’ve asked our Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) to share with us what is the best part of the job and what is something that public might not know about their work. Follow along all week! Say hello to Amber!

Amber joined AWS’ Community Clinic as a veterinary assistant in 2019 and because a licensed veterinary technician in 2021.
“My favorite thing about being a vet tech is seeing all the animals that come in needing veterinary care and being an integral part of them leaving feeling better than they came in.

I don’t think the public knows how hands on the vet techs are with their animal’s care. From filling medication’s to cleaning their kennels, providing gentle restraint during exams and treatments, showing each animal the same love they would receive at home and much more!”

We’ve asked our Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) to share with us what is the best part of the job and what is something that public might not know about their work. Follow along all week! Meet Carolyn!

Carolyn became a licensed vet tech seven years ago and joined the AWS Community Clinic in 2018, when it opened.
“I love being a part of the process with the vets and my coworkers of helping animals. I especially appreciate being able to work with shelter animals as well community pets and knowing our organization can help caregivers keep their pets in their homes. What the public might not know is that there is always something new to learn! While many foundational aspects of vet care stay the same, there are always new ideas and ways of doing things that challenge us to keep the best welfare of the animals in mind.”

Today we feature Peyton! Peyton has been with AWS for two years and just this summer passed her boards to become a licensed veterinary technician.

“My favorite part about being a vet technician is knowing that I am helping every pet that comes in. We are the voice they don't have. Something that the public doesn't know is that a vet tech does many things including: monitor anesthesia, take x-rays, draw blood, run lab samples, prep for surgery. There is a lot more to it that the public doesn’t see. They only see us assisting the doctor during their pet’s exam.”

We kick off the week with Amanda!
Amanda has spent her entire career in veterinary medicine. She’s been an LVT for 17 years and has worked at AWS’ Community Veterinary Clinic since 2019.
“My favorite thing about being a vet tech is that I get to help so many animals in so many different ways from helping to provide annual wellness care to providing specialized care that allows me to utilize all of my skills. One thing the public may not know about being a licensed vet tech is that it requires a lot of schooling and you can earn up to a Bachelors degree (which is what I have) and you can even specialize and earn a vet tech specialty (or VTS) in areas such as nutrition, emergency and critical care, exotics and more.”

We love partnering with our local library! Otis and Levi are the Kennebunk Free Library's current foster cats. With the library's record for getting cats adopted quickly, we know Otis and Levi will find their new home in the blink of an eye!

The cats live at the library until they are adopted, and staff happily reported no cats have been returned by their new owners.
