Meet Cooper. He’s a GORGEOUS Czech-line German Shepherd struggling with some big feelings about humans and some dogs.
Overall he’s very insecure and unsure of his job in this world, so he reacts to feel like he has some control.
His breed plays a giant part in his behavior as well so we have to make sure we’re satisfying his needs if we want him to even care about our needs. So i’ll be adding in some mental/physical athleticism into his daily routine to give him some relief as well as teaching him how to cope with his big feelings.

3 things I never do as a dog trainer:
Let any dogs greet on leash, stranger or not. If you let your dog greet another dog on leash, you better know how to break up a dog fight.
Play with laser pointers with dogs. I have met so many dogs whose quality of life is diminished because they can’t just relax and be a dog. If you want to play with laser pointer, get a cat.
Mess with a dogs food while they’re eating. You are not teaching the lesson you’re meaning to. This does not prevent resource guarding, it causes it.
Just because you did any of this with your dog and none of this happened or cause anything, does not mean that you can or should keep doing it. You’re still allowing your dog to practice unhealthy behaviors. The more they practice a behavior, good or bad, the better they’ll get at it.

Excitement always has it’s place in this world, just not always the time. I am all for a good zoomies session, but if it happens when there’s 3 toddlers and 2 elderly people walking around; You need to be able to control it. You cannot control it when people are around, if you haven’t perfected it when they aren’t there.
I know we want to play with our dogs. You probably want to give your kid everything they want, but it doesn’t mean it’s healthy or the best thing for them. It’s not everytime, but make sure you have control over your dogs intensity level with and without distractions. Practice, proof, & pattern.

Your dog doesn’t need you to be all-knowing of dog training or psychology. If they did, I wouldn’t have a job.
However, it’s not fair to bring them into our house and world, and not delve into theirs at all.
Hire the trainer. Learn to better understand and communicate with your dog. They don’t need or want your perfection, just your presence and effort.

I figured a little reintroduction post was in order since we’re adding to the team now!
Hi. I’m Skylar, but mostly everyone calls me “Aunt Sky”. I’m 22, I love coffee, traveling, and pretty much any animal except birds. I specialize in Board and Trains and I am in love with every step of it, but Individual Sessions and Group Class are my favorite services to do!
I started working with dogs almost 6 years ago at an animal hospital. On my 2nd day at that hospital, we didn’t have the correct information on a boarding dog, and I got bit. Neither of us knew it then, but that bite changed my life.
Before that my only experience with dogs was love and affection. Moses made me realize that isn’t exactly the formula for a balanced, healthy dog. I spent the next year trying to figure out what made those dogs tick, what they needed from me, how could I help them?
The next year I started mentoring under a trainer, and begged to soak in every bit of dog training and psychology I could. With every piece of information I got about them, I was learning about me too. I finally understood why I related to these dogs so much, we all needed balance and guidance. So together we grew and healed. They helped me get better instead of just feeling better, like I had been for years.
So now my goal is to return the favor to them and their humans. I know what it feels like to be in a rut with your dog or to feel like you’re not capable of being what they need.
I also know what it feels like to come out on the other side of that having a healthier mindset and relationship with your dog. Thats all I want for every dog and human I get the pleasure of working with. I’m incredibly grateful for every one of you that i’ve gotten to work with. I look forward to working with more of you❤️

Anna has such a calm, intentional energy and she does so well with the dogs. She’ll be doing Pack Walks, Individual Walks, Group Classes, and she’ll be assisting me with some sessions to continue her training. I’m so excited to bring her energy, brain, and friendship to this team.

Meet Jack and Brute; Two brothers that are absolutely about to steal my heart.
They’re both here for a Board and Train, but for opposite reasons.
Jack is a happy-go-lucky, goofy boy but he has a tendency to counter-surf, jump on people, chew things, and just generally doesn’t know how to relax. The biggest thing we’ll be teaching Jack is how to be okay with doing nothing, and neutralization.
Brute is an insecure, sensitive soul and he’s very timid around new people. Over the next few days i’ll build my relationship with him, i’ll teach him not to worry about the people or decision making. I’ll deal with it for him. Then we’ll start teaching him neutralization with other people by guiding and advocating for him.
There’s a lot going on in the dog training world right now, so I want to open my training world up to you guys and show you more of an hour-by-hour, day-by-day look of my board and trains while Brute and Jack are here. When your dogs are with me, whether for a board and train, pack walk, etc. They’re my own flesh and blood, I would do absolutely anything to protect them from every kind of harm. I’m honored to know and learn from every single one of them.❤️
4 years ago today, I walked into a pack of dogs for the first time. I was unstable, unbalanced, and in a pretty dark place. Those dogs ended up saving my life in more ways than one.
They saw the good in me when I couldn’t, knew things about me before I did, they called me out on my s**t, and they made me get better so I could help them get better. But I didn’t get better by giving them a ton of affection or cuddles. I got better because if I wanted their trust to be able to lead them, I had to be worthy of it.
I gained their trust and respect. I would have taken a bullet for any one of them and they knew that. I’ll take that kind of bond anyday over one mostly built on affection. The people in your life who love you will correct you, guide you, and want you to be better because they love you. Be that for your dog, you’re the only one who can do it for them.
P.S the hardest part of my job is still getting dogs to pose for pictures🙃

Sometimes dogs with separation anxiety get enabled by the AMOUNT of direction they get. They rely on it fully and never learn to make good decisions on their own. I tethered her so if she got off, she couldnt follow me around. She’d get off, and feel the leash guiding her back to bed before I had to step in. She learned how to make the decision that makes her feel good WITHOUT me. She gains confidence in that decision and independence.

Practice makes progress🐾
A structured 30 minute walk with your dog will do them more good than the dog park, playing, or running rampant around the backyard could ever do. They can take physical exercise all day and get back up, asking them to follow direction throughout a stimulating walk is actually tiring. Our dogs are migratory creatures and they crave direction, fulfill that need first. Then play and run.
No matter what your training journey looks like, you’re doing what is best for your dog and that is what matters. Progress isn’t linear!
Explaining the “Contrast of Feeling Exercise” This is a great exercise to do with an anxious/reactive dog. You can do this how i’m doing it with Ember by my side, or you can also use place to bring them back to. Remember your dog should have 3 safe spaces; their crate, place, and by your side! Pack Walks are good for the soul, theirs and mine❤️
We had a big group today for a Pack Walk & it was a blast! Pack Walks truly help your control your own energy and think outside the box. It’s also amazing socialization to learn how to just coexist with other dogs. (Ignore the vet leashes, I accidentally sold too many and just ordered more the other day😂)
I’ve been working with Ember and Vader for a while now. Mom and I noticed that they tend to have a lot more stress walking down the street at their house, rather than a trail. Their street is busy and loud, but if we teach them to be calm, they realize it feels a LOT better to be calm. Barely any words were spoken during this video, but the conversation we had was huge. I gave them both long leashes and we walked, until one of them would come close to passing me. When they would do that, I would use spacial pressure to take a step into them. They quickly started understanding what I was asking of them. Vader (white) doesnt understand spacial pressure as well as his sister, so I applied very slight leash pressure to help him out as well. Not everything works for every dog, which is why it’s important to have all the tools you can under your belt. They did fantastic and I cant wait to teach Mom how to do this with them! If you watch to the end of the video, you’ll see me completely forget my phone and walk away😂Are you really working with a dog if you’re not completely focused on them?
