Some helpful reminders to keep your pets safe this Easter.

It is getting close to the "season of the lost birds". Many inexperienced finders receive a lot of information from folks meaning no harm or they may even volunteer to take the bird off their hands. This causes delays in getting the birds care they need. While you may think they are fine, they look fine, or "they are so nice!", they are lost and need remedial care and a safe place (safe place refers to no predators, no car or house scents, etc) to be while the parents are located. So we are putting together our first stab at where the bird may be in stages based on how you find them. We started with the worst one first, on the ground. They have a very short amount of time to get them help. Try not to handle the bird once retrieved. Bird rescues are better options for birds rather than shelters.

On World Animal Reiki Day, I'm pleased to announce that we now offer Animal Reiki! What is Reiki you ask? Reiki is as form of energy healing that was founded in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922. Studies have shown that Reiki aids in relaxation and healing for both animals and people. Reiki is life force energy that is channeled through a healer that has gone through special certification and attunement. I received my Reiki training and attunement last year. When I was younger, our family had a Golden Retriever named Shelby. She was good natured, intelligent and one of the most loveable dogs I've ever known. I loved running my fingers through her thick double coat. One of her favorite things to do was take a dip in the kiddy pool on hot summer days. I still think about her gentle heart often. In honor of Shelby, here are some fun facts about Golden Retrievers for National Golden Retriever Day.

Today we recognize the exemplary and necessary work of assistance dogs. These spectacular dogs not only love their owners, but they provide essential care. They perform a broad range of specialized tasks that keep their owners safe, healthy and independent. Since their primary function is to assist their owner, please don't approach an assistance dog without the owner's permission. If you see an assistance dog without their owner, be on the lookout. A lone assistance dog could be trying to alert someone that their owner needs help.
