It’s important to us to create a home environment so we don’t kennel our rescues. This helps us know what they

need from a home environment, so they can find a forever home. Thank you to our donors, adopters, or fosters for giving all dogs a fair chance at a happy life because all days should be Dog Days!

Update on our newest little guy with a bit of an attitude issue. His name is Benji, we aren't big fans and may change it but we're calling him Ben since he does know it.

We're also going to work on socializing to keep that fear to a minimum and not put him in situations that will put him under undo stress. Can you imagine being a "Christmas puppy" to a noisy house with kids most likely fighting over you, pulling at you, poking, yelling, so much going on then being tossed into a scary shelter? That's the definition of being set up for failure. We've got you now though!

He's had a few days to decompress in a quiet and relaxed foster home. He's come to trust his foster mom enough for her to do most everything, including cleaning his ears, without biting and great deal and his foster dad a good bit as well since he's the fun one that plays with him and his favorite ball or octopus stuffy!

It's pretty clear that someone has allowed Ben to rough play, not aggression but play, with his mouth. Certain playstyles and hand movements while playing make it obvious though that mouthy wrestling was definitely a thing at some point. He's a smart boy and is learning that that's not ok though!

When he first arrived, there was definitely some fear aggression. It was clear that Ben had Ben through some hectic, rough times and was terrified because of them. He needed someone to move slowly and calmly with him. Luckily we can appreciate slow and calm. We let him come to us on his time. He's got a safe area with a comfy crate, he's tethered when he's out and we're watching him so he can't get startled at a weird noise, hide behind something and get stuck out some crazy scenario like that. He's earning more freedom each day as his trust in people and his environment builds. He enjoys running in the backyard (on a long training lead) when the weather permits and he LOVES to play with toys!

He's not quite sure of the other dogs, we feel sure he's just not been socialized so we've started working with him on that. They're all bigger than he is, after all he's just 11 pounds, so things can be intimidating!

Now that he's comfortable with his foster, he'll see our partner vet on Monday. We think there's a possibility he may have a uti so we want to get that checked out and he's been rubbing his ears on his cot (that's why they got cleaned). We wanted to give him a few days to trust his foster before going straight to the vet though so it wasn't thoroughly traumatizing.

Thank you to everyone who donated toward his care. Hopefully he won't need anything special and we can get him neutered soon. We'll continue to work on his mouthiness but as of now, with us, it's all playful and he's responding to putting his mouth on toys instead of people well. Sometimes you can even see him stop and redirect himself. Smart little cookie!

We would like to wish everyone a SAFE and happy New Years Eve.

Reminder- today is the last day to make a tax deductible donation for 2024!

Don't forget that fireworks are likely to start early and go late. Please make sure your babies are secure, only go out to potty on leash even in fenced yards and have a comfortable calm spot to hide if fireworks upset them. If they get medicated, make sure to give it to them before the fireworks start.

If you go out and drink, please do not drive! Many companies offer free rides on New Years Eve.

Take a look at Will being a goofy as he usually is πŸ˜†

Christmas puppy has already landed in the shelter :'( . At just 6 months old and 11 pounds this baby is so terrified he's lashing out and won't let anyone touch him. We want to help him. Can you PLEDGE toward his vet care and possible behavioral or training needs?

He's safely in foster to decompress with us now!
We'll post an update when he's had a little time to decompress and we know more. For now he's fearful and mouthy. He'll get the calm, quiet time he needs to get his bearings.

Christmas eve and day were really hard for Rosa. Back to the vet we went this morning.

We discovered that she's been having seizures without us knowing. She's quiet and they've been short. We couldn't figure out why she randomly just started compulsively circling, walking into walls, falling down, etc. until we finally saw her have one. Rosa is a very aloof, keep to herself kind of girl, always has been and sleeps a lot as most older gals do.

The seizures and backlash were unforgiving for her Christmas eve and day, she had to be sedated to rest and keep from hurting herself while compulsively wandering in circles. It seems she's unable to see during this phase.

We're starting her on seizure medication and praying it works but we have a concern that she may be suffering from a brain tumor since this came on so suddenly and so fiercely.

Her foster family loves her dearly and she is particularly fond of her foster dad. Rosa had a very difficult time adjusting to being in a home when she came to us but he seemed to be a calming spot in her world.

We are so thankful to everyone in the that's helped with the care of our babies and hate to continue to ask but if you're able to donate a dollar or two toward Rosa or any of their care we would be so very grateful as we continue to work to catch up our vet bill (which continues to climb) by the end of the year.

Don't forget, many employers now match donations dollar for dollar. Please check with yours!

Tis' the season.
3 of our hospice/sanctuary dogs aren't doing well and have needed urgent vet care. The 4th photo, the tiny senior Chihuahua came to us because her owner wasn't able to care for her.

Fundraising hasn't been very successful lately and we need to get our vet bills caught up by the end of the year. Christmas is just a few days away and we know that money is tight for everyone but these babies had no idea what time of year it is or what it meant when they got sick. Please, if you're able to give just a dollar, that will help!

Each of their stories is below followed by ways to donate.

Twyla came to us as a baby, just a couple of days old, with her mom and sister. You may remember their story. Mom and sister were healthy and adopted into wonderful homes. Twyla immediately needed help thriving, she had to be syringe fed, she couldn't suckle from mom or a bottle. She didn't grow a fast as he sister. She was just a little different in many ways. We soon found out that Twyla suffered from malformed kidneys. We knew she'd have a shortened life but we've promised to make that life the best we possibly can. Fast forward to almost 2 years later and Twyla has enjoyed the life of luxury with her incredible foster family. Recently our vibrant, wild, active little girl has started losing weight. 2 days ago she showed us a vet different side of herself, she was wobbly, lethargic and not interested in doing anything. She was immediately seen by our partner vet, bloodwork done and a treatment plan put together. He diet has been changed, supplements added, daily fluids to address dehydration and we're reevaluating her daily.

Rosa came to us all the way from Baton Rogue as a senior on the euthanasia list. We were able to save her last minute. She was ok health wise but had trouble adjusting and interacting with her foster family. It took her nearly a year to truly adjust, apart being a nervous senior we decided it was best she become a Dog Days sanctuary dog. She's done well being aloof and living her life on her terms. Yesterday she had a scary episode at her foster home, it was as if she'd had full blown dementia when she had no signs in the past. She was inconsolable for several hours, stumbling, walking in circles through the house compulsively, leaning on walls to not fall and almost dragging a back foot. She was taken in for a full physical and bloodwork. The physical found nothing or of the ordinary and we're waiting for the bloodwork results.

Charlie hasn't been with us for very long but we love him dearly just the same. He came to us having cluster seizures. We ran tests, got medication established and got the seizures under control. At least for a time they were. Charlie had another bout of cluster seizures again early in the week. His foster parents have been able to catch them quickly and he's come out of them safely, though extremely taxing on him and needing attention after each. We've been very fortunate at this point that he's been able to bounce back from the seizures without any lasting damage.

The last picture is a little girl that came to us yesterday, her name is Lilo. She's 13 years old and her owner found himself in hard times unable to care for her. As you can see she got a wound on her cheek, it actually goes all the way through her cheek. She saw the vet today, she got bloodwork, her cheek addressed and medications, her ears were really bad so those cleaned and medicated, her a**l gland were very impacted so they were emptied as well. She has a mammary tumor, needs a dental with extractions and too be spayed. She needs a good groom as well. We'll see what he bloodwork results are to proceed.

Again, if you're able to donate a single dollar, it will help! All of the dogs in our care have had and continue to have costly medical needs.

Donations are 100% tax deductible.

and our end of year fundraising. Please remember, all donations are tax deductible and many employers now match donations!

Our goal is $35,000.
We need it to be successful more this year than ever before a it may be the determining factor in us keeping our doors open or having to sadly close them.

We've taken in as many dogs as we've been able that have needed us most but we've had to say no more than ever. That is beyond heartbreaking for us. Our fundraisers haven't covered the costs of any of the dog's medical needs fully. We have senior special needs dogs that aren't adoptable that we treat daily and monthly with routine meds, vet visits, bloodwork, etc.

Ethan is still healing his broken leg and we'll be more xrays. His surgery balance is still outstanding.

Percy has healed well abs is ready to find his home. His surgery balance is still short.

Last week Will started limping, he's still healing from his burns and awaiting surgeries when they heal. The limp is requiring some special imaging, nothing is normal for our warrior, and his funds are empty.

These are just a couple of things we have going on right now. We can't thank all of our village enough for all of the support that's been shown to us and the dogs in our care. Without each of you, none of this would be possible! Done of the beautiful babies that have been with us this year. Done still are.

We are asking against for your help with Giving Tuesday and our year end fundraising. We need to catch up our current be bills, buy supplies (preventatives, crates that need to be replaced, puppy pads, food, etc), hopefully renew or upcoming licenses and insurance, get an emergency fund restarted and definitely get funds into Will's fund. We were blessed that his fund lasted a long as it did without us having to ask for anything too be added to it!

Ethan would like to wish everyone a happy weekend! He's sad because he is still on crate rest as his leg is still healing but he's happy to be getting all of the one on one attention he can handle! We're still working on catching up his vetting bill so of you're able to donate a dollar or two we'd be grateful!

UPDATE: He's safely out with us. There's a lot going on that we're trying to unravel to figure out what's going on with this sweet boy. We have him on seizure medication as well as a few other medications. We're waiting on some test results to return.

Please continue to share for donations, he's got a ways to go for us to get him where he needs to be. πŸ’š

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This sweet senior was surrendered to the shelter because he suddenly had 5 seizures in one day.
The shelter has witnessed 2 seizures since he's been with them. The shelter gave medication to stop the seizing and put him on medication to hopefully stop, or at least lessen, the seizures to get him out to safety so that he can get a proper workup.
Sudden seizures, especially so many, is concerning and needs attention sooner than later. The owners didn't leave vet records or other information. We want to help this baby but need your help to do so.
If you're able to help with this sweet, handsome boy, we're only asking for pledges to see if enough funds are available for his workup, testing and treatment. Please post in the comments how much of you're able to help so we know if we're able to bring him into the Dog Days family πŸ’š.
Thank you for being a part of our village! Please share!
Ethan is responding well to physical therapy. He's using both back legs, it's not the prettiest walk but he's walking. He's starting to regain control of his bladder and bowels as well. So he's making making positive progress overall.
Soon we'll redo his bloodwork to recheck his liver values, which were elevated before, and start to prepare for his surgery or surgeries. We're hopeful we're able to take care of everything with one sedation.
We are still requesting donations to help cover his upcoming surgery and therapy. We're extremely thankful for everyone has and continues to support us and the wonderful deserving dogs that come into our care, we can't do it without you!
Will and Percy met while at our partner vet! They weren't quiet sure why we wouldn't let them rough house though. Silly boys, you're both still healing!
Both boys are doing well.
Will continues to heal at his own pace, as he does everything, the world is his oyster and he knows it! He's a happy, spoiled, goofy boy.
Percy is healing at a quicker pace. The sutures have been removed from his eye and we've decided to not do a second surgery on it. His eye is no longer in jeopardy of damage so it would just be a cosmetic procedure to do a second surgery. His burns are healing well and his spirits are much higher! He's a happy, energetic, playful puppy! We will start taking applications for his adoption by the end of the month most likely!
Percy's bills are not quite covered and Will's care is, obviously, ongoing. We appreciate everyone who has donated and continues to support our efforts to help these babies who need us most. πŸ’™
Now named Ethan (means strength), formerly Snickerdoodle, saw our vet partner again this morning after getting his pain under better control.
He still hadn't had a bowel movement so we helped him out with that. There was a LOT in there that no one wants to hear about that had been there for a bit. That brought undoubted relief.
We did a little more with his back legs since his pain is better managed and he does have some positive responses! Pelvic xrays didn't show anything to note, so that's also good news.
We believe that he has some muscle weakening and possibly atrophy so we are starting physical therapy right away.
He's got a horrible urinary tract infection and is on antibiotics for that. We are still waiting on bloodwork results.
After some more fluids and B12 he perked up some and finally ate for us.
Things are looking more promising today than they were yesterday. We're much more hopefully for young Ethan.
He's got quite a road ahead of him but we've got directions now!
Thank you to everyone who has and continues to donate and share our babies in need. You're a critical part of our village!
Our sweet little boy that was hit by a car isn't doing well. At our visit today we got blood to send out for a full blood panel which will be back tomorrow.
He's got a cherry eye (a condition where the eyelid turns inside out). He also has a ruptured mass. That will need to be removed and biopsied when he's healthier.
He got xrays and an ultrasound.
His abdomen was really tight so we wanted to rule out any free fluid or internal bleeding, the ultrasound showed nothing.
Xrays showed he has a right rear leg fracture. It's a clean break and should hopefully heal with crate rest. They also showed a bowel packed with p**p.
He was painful so we didn't want to put him through too much.
Upon getting him to foster, we noticed that he didn't seem to have bladder control nor could he stand on either back leg. This could also explain why his bowels are so full, he may not be able to empty them himself.
We will see our vet again in the morning for further evaluation with more pain meds on board but it looks like a specialist visit is in our near future.
This poor boy is so sad. He wants to be held and touched but also to just rest. 😞
Donations are needed, welcomed and appreciated.
This tiny boy was found on the side of the road, appears to have been hit by a car and left.
A kind person saw him and took him to an ER. The ER was unable to do anything because there was no owner to sign off on treatment. He was transferred to their county shelter.
The county shelter had a rescue line up to take him when his stray hold was up (today). They had him on pain management and stable during that time. The other rescue was not able to get him to them for another week or so. The shelter wanted to get him out and into medical care as quickly as possible.
That's where we come in. We're headed to our incredible vet right now! We don't have a name yet, he'll let us know. In the meantime, we appreciation help in any form; donations, shares, good thoughts, everything!
As always, thank you 🫢
Apologies for the overdue update. Percy's surgery went well. He was neutered, the debridement went well, his ear was cleaned and packed with medication and his eye surgery went smoothly.
Now we wait to see how the skin heals above his eye to determine if a second surgery will be needed or not. The skin that was there to use wasn't the best quality since it had already been damaged so there's a chance it will heal in a manner we aren't anticipating. We're hopeful that isn't the case though.
It's been a very long and busy 3 days for our insanely sweet little boy. Now his job now is to rest and recover while we continue to treat his skin and monitor his healing.
Thank you all who have and continue to donate towards Percy's needs. We can't thank you enough for your help but Percy is worth every bit of it. πŸ’™
