A friend recently asked if Falls Creek Outdoors would be interested in helping in a small way, with the celebration of the grand opening of the Big Bro Joe Foundation’s new facility in Kennewick. Having been involved with mentoring for years, I happily agreed to assist. The event had a great turnout, with a couple hundred people enjoying the sunshine, good food and lively music. Dancing, laughter and camaraderie filled the air. There were bouncy houses, face painting, snow cones, French fries, hair cutting, basketball and new friends mingling. Inside, kids played volleyball with balloons, had access to computers and spun away at the foosball tables. In a small corner, FCO set up a display of fishing fly drawings and encouraged kids to share their artistic abilities by sketching a select pattern. Drawing out the talents, ( no pun intended), of youngsters is one of the more rewarding aspects of mentoring. Here’s a sample of sketches from Saturday’s event. 😊

An often selected favorite of fly fishermen the world over, the Muddler Minnow resembles a grasshopper if fished dry, on the surface, or a small sculpin bait fish if fished wet. This sketch is a 5th grader’s rendition a few years back! Look at the size of this Kanektok rainbow who chomped on a “mud!” Sweetness!!!

Chinook Salmon, or as they’re referred to in Alaska….KINGS!…. start to enter the rivers in June. By mid-July they’re still coming in and you stand an excellent chance of hooking into these bad boys! None of the Pacific salmon feed once they leave the salt on their spawning migrations upriver. But with persistence and patience, casting over a school of large shadows lying in a deep run, the bite has been known to light up for 45 minutes or more, where everyone fishing the pool hooks into these hard-charging wonders! Our permitted floats begin July 12th. Join us on the hunt! Text KINGS to 509-539-8855 for more info.

Our Story

Falls Creek Outdoors operates wilderness float trips and provides fishing, hunting and back-country guide services in Washington and Alaska USA

Spring and early summer floats are on the Yakima River, a Blue Ribbon trout stream in eastern WA. where groups of up to 4 will enjoy nature’s beauty while drifting through stands of old growth cottonwood trees. These provide excellent cover for deer, elk, c***s, coyotes, beaver, otter, ducks & geese and many species of raptors and shore birds. You will float several miles to a secluded riverside camp where enthusiastic, fun-loving and outdoor-minded staff will greet you with welcoming smiles and a cold beverage. A gourmet meal is prepared as you fly fish, spin fish or don’t fish! It’s the perfect location to just kick back and enjoy the surroundings, with intimate, calming river flows accompanied by fresh, gentle breezes. After lunch we’ll continue drifting through braided island sections where downed trees pepper the waterscape, creating a unique sense of excitement only visible from the wild, water side!

Mid-summers find us in Alaska, where we planted our roots seasonally more than 40 years ago! Falls Creek Outdoors operates seven to ten day float trips on a variety of Bristol Bay area rivers, famous for large runs of salmon, distant bear viewing, day hike and exploring opportunities. These trips are perfect for families, business associates or a group of girlfriends just wanting to escape the hustle bustle of city life and get out to enjoy the best of what mother nature has to offer! FCO guides thrive on shareng our intimate knowledge of the fun, traditional and soulful/back-to-nature sport of fly fishing. It’s the perfect place to learn, whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced fly fisher! Casting lessons, line control, mending, fly tying, reading water, valuable knots, wading tips, entomology, boating safety and more are all learned on a trip with FCO! Loads of fun and lifelong friendships created!

Fall swings into hunting mode with waterfowl and antlered game on the agenda. If Harlequin ducks are on your bucket list, we offer opportunities in AK before we head south. WA offers unique hunting for species such as Roosevelt Elk and Blacktail deer, but we also have a healthy population of Whitetail, Mule deer and Black bear. Remember.... your great-grandfather HAD to hunt for subsistence purposes! Keep the tradition alive and take a kid hunting! We offer great opportunities at success through mid-December!
