This dog is so excited over visitors that he barks, jumps up and even nips at clothing. We need him to understand that only if he is quiet and either sit or lay down will he get attention (and a cookie) from me the visitor. We have reinforced a down a lot as a dog in down position is less likely to jump. I use either a leash the owner holds on to, or a barrier so the dog can’t reach me the visitor. If he did, he would jump and nip. #if I will only walk up and hand him a cookie if he is in a down position. #politegreeting #antijumpexercise #dogtraining #jumpingup #gentlewaysdogtraining #gentleways #dogschoice #behaviorconsultant

With a shelter dog, we often have no information about how a meet and greet with a stranger dog will go, and it can also be stressful for the residence dog to have a stranger dog in its home. And when you don’t have an extra human body to work the distance on leash in a neutral area, you can try something similar to this setup. The sheet on the floor was originally covering the shelter dog Minnie’s gate. I led my German shepherd out on leash to watch her reaction. Once I see loose body language, no lunging or barking, I place myself between the two barriers and start tossing treats away. This eliminates any of the dogs to be too focused on the other dog. Staring can be rude.
I’ll call this a success for a first meet and greet inside, second day in on the board and train for Minnie.

Shiva foundation loose leash skills
Shiva is a new learner when it comes to
Loose leash and she has a lot of spring in her legs. Here is the beginning on loose leash for this young pup.
Remember, there are times during the walk when you work these skills and there are times you let the dog just be a dog, and that includes important things like sniffing and learning about the environment- but regardless - if the dog hits the end of the leach, stop and let her adjust her position so the leash becomes slack. Slack means walk and that’s an important goal for the dog.
