As we exit Senior Wellness Month and head into Dental Health Month, our last topic of discussion is Dental Disease! 😺🦷

While a cat can develop dental problems at any age, studies report that between 50 and 90% of cats older than four years of age suffer from some form of dental disease. We see this often in our senior patients.

"The three most common dental diseases in cats are gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth resorption, and the severity of each of these conditions can vary significantly. Dental disease in cats can cause serious pain and discomfort, which can impact a cat’s quality of life. In many cases, dental disease causes a cat to stop eating, which leads to a variety of health problems."

Teeth brushing, dental treats, and regular dental cleanings can aid in the prevention of dental disease.

Unbeknownst to many, acupuncture is an effective way to treat diseases/illnesses and provide comfort to your cats! At our clinics, Dr. Pair offers 3 different types of acupuncture.

Dry needle technique
This technique involves the use of very small sterile needles inserted at acupoints. It is the basic form of acupuncture and although basic, is very effective.

Electro-acupuncture
The same needles are used as in dry needling, but an electroacupuncture unit (similar to a tens unit) is used to provide a deeper response. Special cords are connected to the needles on the body, and electrical impulses are sent through them, providing a more profound response. Some cats do not tolerate electroacupuncture because it is too much stimulation for a sensitive feline. It is not an appropriate treatment for cats who are aggressive, extremely worked up, or extremely nervous at the veterinarian's office.

Aqua-acupuncture
Involves injecting a sterile liquid (often Vitamin B) into an acupuncture point to provide a longer-lasting effect. This is a great treatment choice for cats who don’t tolerate sitting with the needles in for the whole treatment.

Schedule an acupuncture consultation to see if any of these would be a good option for your kitty!

As we continue providing information on common diseases we see in senior cats, the next topic to cover is Heart Disease!

Heart disease can be a difficult disease to find in cats. In some cases, the signs are obvious to the trained eye. In others, a serious heart disorder can remain hidden for years before finally expressing itself in a sudden, perhaps fatal, deterioration of function.

Having your senior cat examined every 6 months is the best way to stay proactive about their health, especially their heart health. While examination with a stethoscope cannot detect all feline heart diseases, it’s the perfect first step in deterring if other testing is warranted.

Check out the article below for more information on heart disease and be sure to schedule an appointment at either Kentwood Cat Clinic or Cat Clinic North if you have concerns or want to get your senior cat examined!

It’s National Answer You Cats Questions Day!

“Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day doesn’t require you to do anything outdoors or expensive. It’s all about sitting down with your cat and thinking about what questions they could be asking you in different situations. You then try to answer them and see if it helps you understand how you could improve your cat’s life and make them happier. It’s an exercise that encourages you to learn more about your cat, its behavior and how you can help them be happier.”

Imagine exploring new places from the perspective of a curious feline, and noticing things you've never seen before.

It’s National Squirrel Appreciation Day!!

As many of our Cat Clinic North friends know- squirrels are an ever present source of entertainment around there! The squirrels are often around checking in on our patients and helping themselves to the bird feeders outside of the windows. Soleil is squaring off with one of the more confident squirrels in the picture below.

Many times our senior cats need fluid therapy to help keep their kidneys hydrated when managing chronic kidney disease. Cats may also need fluids under their skin if they are sick, dehydrated, vomiting, or having diarrhea.

Below is a link that explains fluid therapy and provides a video by Dr. Margie Scherk showing how to give subcutaneous fluids.

**Note - while this video discusses warming the fluid bag by using the microwave, we recommend using a warm water bath to help avoid uneven distribution of warmth within the fluid bag.

What is Fluid Therapy? Like humans, all animals need to drink or take in water and/or other fluids every day. More than half of a cat’s body weight is water! Your veterinarian may recommend that your cat needs specially formulated liquids to help treat feline disease and prevent problems. The mana...
