members, Check out the "Pork Pioneers: Discovering the Swine Industry Youth Workshop". We've had some amazing leadership from alum and ISU grads leading the way to plan this day for you! This is a day about the swine industry not showing pigs at the county fair - so all youth are welcome!

4-H members 4th-7th grade are invited to participate in Pork Pioneers: Discovering the Swine Industry, a hands-on workshop designed to explore the world of pigs from farm to fork. This new educational event will take place on March 21 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Dallmeyer Hall on the Washington County Fairgrounds. The workshop is open to Washington, Iowa, Johnson, and Keokuk County 4-H members in 4th-7th grade, with 8th-12th graders welcome to volunteer as group leaders.

Participants will learn about swine nutrition, health, biosecurity, pork meat cuts, food safety, and cooking techniques through hands-on activities and expert-led discussions.

Whether new to 4-H or an experienced member, this workshop will provide a fun and educational experience to deepen your knowledge of the pork industry.

Thanks to generous support from the Washington County Pork Producers, the event is free for Washington County 4-H members. Participants from Iowa, Johnson, and Keokuk counties can attend for a $15 fee, payable to their local 4-H office.

Register by March 10 at https://tinyurl.com/4hPorkPioneers2025.

Do not miss this chance to become a Pork Pioneer with interactive activities, expert speakers, and delicious pork tastings.

It’s Spay/ neuter awareness month! We want to take this time to discuss Pyometra.

We see several cases of pyometra at the clinic each year in unfixed animals. Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection if left untreated. It typically occurs a few weeks after your pet’s heat cycle. It is more common in older pets, but your pet can develop this even after her very first heat cycle!

There are two types of pyometra: open and closed.

Open: Is when the uterus is infected, but there is still an opening which allows some pus/ discharge to be released.

Closed: Is when the uterus is infected, but it is also plugged. This means all the pus/ discharge is quickly building up inside the uterus. This can cause the uterus to rupture.

What are the symptoms?

· Lethargic
· Not eating
· Not drinking
· Vomiting

What to do if you think your pet has a pyometra?

Please call and consult with us right away, as a closed pyometra is an EMERGENCY.

How to fix it?

Preventative spay of your animal is best. When diagnosed, this once simple and safe surgery, is a major surgery. This uterus has now gone from the size of your pinky finger to the size of your forearm! Most of the time your pet will need additional hospitalization after the procedure.

What to take away!

Pyometra is an incredibly easy infection to prevent. Please consider spaying your pet if you are not planning on using them to breed.
