Happy Fun Days! ☀️🎉💜💛

There are so many fun and exciting things happening with our clinic this summer, and we’d like to share one today!

Welcoming Dr. McKenna Brinning Henningsen to Our Veterinary Team! 🐷🐶🐄🐈🐾

We are pleased to introduce Dr. Henningsen as the newest member of our veterinary team.
McKenna received her bachelor's degree in animal science and DVM degree from Iowa State. She is originally from Keota, IA and is excited to be returning home! She grew up on an independent farrow-to-finish swine operation and was very involved in 4H and FFA. Growing up, she especially enjoyed exhibiting swine and cattle. McKenna is excited to work with a mix of different animals, and we are confident she will provide exceptional care to our clients and patients!

We started early and ended late today! Today’s trip involved driving 3 hours one way to a farm to perform 100+ pig vasectomies. These are very important to perform to make teaser boars and takes some skilled surgeons to make it happen. Dr’s Cody and Jim have a pretty good system and can do 20-30 per hour! We can’t wait to have our other doctors trained and help with these in the near future! It’s also a good physical activity-7 hours of up down, lifting pigs (~13,000 pounds worth for Cody), no breaks and no lunch break. The Branstad’s don’t like to stop moving obviously! 🤪 Nothing a couple mountain dews can’t fix.

Bye bye front desk! If they don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Well if you’re not handy either, you should be able to demolish something. We’ve got you covered there!! Most of the staff is pretty handy, but Dr. Cody is not, so he uses sledgehammers and saws. The clinic is getting a major overhaul over the next 2-3 weeks, so we appreciate the patience as we all work through this remodel together.

When the call comes in to help with a breached calf you know you may be there awhile. You consider the time change today, the time to drive there and back, the 20-30 minutes you spend trying to reposition the calf realizing this isn’t going to work, and then finally the c-section to save the calf and cow. It’s all worth it to get that live calf! Sorry it was too cold and I was too tired to get a picture of the big thing. It was a good 100 pounds! 😅

Mondays are an important day for veterinary clinics that work with swine and poultry. It allows us “down time” away from other swine and poultry to ensure we won’t carry disease from one production system to another. Today was an early day where getting to a poultry farm in the neighboring state before 8 was needed. You may ask why does a clinic see animals so far away? Similar to human medicine, it takes people who have knowledge in an area to be able help. Luckily, our clinic is one of the few that is knowledgeable in practically every species. Fortunately, if it’s something we don’t know, we have several area clinics that can help us!

Be on the lookout for some exciting news! 2024 is going to be a year to offer patients some new experiences to better help with shortages in our area and beyond.

01/12/2024

We will have a doctor in the clinic until 9:30 this morning if there is something you need before the weekend. Emergency services are available but of course will be as weather allows, to keep everyone safe.

01/09/2024

We’re closed today due to weather. Phone calls are being forwarded to speak with a veterinarian if needed. Weather and mainly the wind later today will make it difficult for any staff to make it in and get back home.

As we head into the holidays, we wanted to make you aware of our schedule for the coming weeks.

🎄We will close at 5 on Friday, December 22 and will have emergency services available for current patients until we open for regular business again on Tuesday, December 26th at noon.

What is a current patient? A patient that has had a physical exam by one of our doctors in the past 12 months.

We ask that you please respect this policy and not call through if this does not apply to your pet. If you do have an emergency and your patient is not current, Blue Pearl of Cedar Rapids and Des Moines are open various hours to help meet your needs.

We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

12/10/2023

This is our friendly reminder that we see current patients for anything after hours. Majority of clinics definition of current is seeing the specific pet or being on farm for your livestock in the past 12 months. Please call to ensure you are current with our practice or your current practice.

If your current practice does not offer after hours care or only specific species emergency care, there is nothing wrong with that. Many practices are still and will always be sole veterinarians. If you would prefer to have a clinic that offered after hours/emergency care, then asking that question will also be very important. Do not wait until you need the emergency care to find out.

Our immediate area will be reduced by about a dozen veterinarians in the next few years. Some of those may gain new veterinarians, but many do not have any replacements and will close their doors. This will force already overloaded veterinary clinics to take on more than they can handle. This is the reality we live in. Being a veterinarian in rural area is one of the most rewarding jobs, but it is also one of the hardest. There are only so many hours in the day to treat patients, so make sure you are established with a clinic that serves your specific needs.

As I’m finishing my last call for the night an old time favorite comes on. A song that has such a different meaning/feeling being the parent instead of the child. I managed a quick phone call between calls to tell my kiddos and wife goodnight. Being a vet is by far the best job in the world, not many could beat all the things I’ve gotten to help make better. It comes at a cost on occasion, but taking a small moment to let them know you’re thinking of them is priceless. You always hope to instill all those good qualities of family, hardwork, etc. into your children to make the world a better place for everyone. Don’t forgot, they’re always watching and listening, so be sure to encourage all those important values…

But let’s leave out the naughty words until they’re a bit older..😂

2022-2023 Award's Highlight: Partner in 4-H Award = Keota Vet Clinic

The Partner in 4-H Award goes to a business or organization that provides significant financial or in-kind support to the county 4-H program. Some of our 4-H programs would not exist without this valuable kind of support. The 2023 Partner in 4-H Award is awarded to Keota Vet Clinic. Annually the Keota Vet Clinic (most often Dr. Cody and Dr. Jim) stand hand-in-hand with us at the swine barn for check-in. They are a joy to work with during that high stress time of fair unloading. They are thorough with the animals and positive to work with our members. They are here late into the night and back EARLY in the morning for those last check-ins. We appreciate the support they provide as fair trophy sponsors and also other 4-H and Extension programs throughout the year. We are fortunate to have such a great partner to call upon and to have out there in the field working with our 4-H Families. Thank you, Dr Cody, Dr. Jim and Keota Vet Clinic.

We will continue to highlight our special award winners from the November 5 Awards Celebration all week. See the complete 4-H Award Program and recipient list at https://iastate.box.com/s/0slz23zudmz3ekf93bvtpomf2p6yh0tk
