Both of these young pups will be with me for 4 weeks!

First we have Wrigley (shepherd/Great Dane cross). He is 11 months old and is guilty of using his size to get his way. He’s already proven to be a fast learner and I can’t wait to see his transformation over the coming weeks!

Secondly we have Coltrane (Terrier mix) who is about 16 weeks old. He’s your typical young pup that is in need of some guidance. Nothing he can’t handle!! He’s a ball of energy and is keeping me on my toes.

Welcome fellas!

Hello everyone and welcome to the MLK9 North Carolina dog training page!

I am Maddie Austin and grew up being an animal lover and any opportunity to interact with one, I did. I got started in the dog community in 2013 when I took my personal pet to a local trainer wanting to learn basic obedience and discovered the trainer’s focus was working dogs. My personal dog became a human remains detection dog and the rest is history. During this time frame, I was also employed with a veterinary office as a tech assistant and kennel manager. As my time working with my personal dog ended, I shifted my focus and started working with Training Canines LLC, which focused on puppy developmental learning and behaviors for two years. When I met my husband, Aaron, we worked as a team to foster dogs that needed medical attention and were able to rehabilitate them so they could be adopted.

While getting my bachelor’s degree in criminology and minoring in American Sign Language at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, I reached out to the university’s police department and began volunteering with their K9 Unit. It was during this time that I was introduced into law enforcement and found a new passion. Once I graduated from college, I became a police officer in 2017 and I am still in service today. In 2020 I achieved my goal and was selected as a K9 handler for the department.

I am well connected within the dog community and committed to learning as much as possible to be a well-rounded trainer. I am passionate about dog behavior and enjoy utilizing modern training techniques to set your dog up for success. Not only do I want your dog to be empowered by quality training, but I want owners to feel confident that they can be the best they can be for their pets.

I look forward to bringing you all along on this journey with me. Stay tuned to see all the cute faces that I get to work with in the future!
