It is with a heavy heart that I announce that BJ passed away in the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve. She lived a long life full of love and snacks (but not as many as she would’ve wanted lol). Our lives and home already seem empty and silent without her large voice and spirit. We miss you Beagle.

This cutie pie is Pixie. This video shows her taking treats from my hand, and seems like such a small moment. However, this is misleading. This video does not show all the hard work done behind the scenes! Pixie is an adorable angel who is very anxious around new people. When her family set up drop in appointments, we all knew it was going to take some time for her to adjust to having me around. Pixie’s family is committed to her training program with a certified dog trainer, Pawsitive Foundations, and her veterinarian is on board as well. (It takes a village y’all!)

Training Troubleshooting: Training Multiple Dogs
Most households in America have more than one dog, so it isn’t a stretch to imagine that a lot of my training inquiries involve training more than one pooch.
But how do we train more than one dog? The answer is simpler than you may think. To train two dogs together, we first must train each dog on their own. Once the dogs are consistently performing well with the cue or task by themselves, then we can put them in pairs or more!
In the video, Ivy and Joker are walking very well together. (They also walk wonderfully with their sister, Ziggy, who isn’t shown in the video!) To accomplish this, their mom, Rachel Keaton, put in a lot of work making sure each dog was walking nicely on their own before putting them together to practice.

Leash reactivity is the most common concern that pet parents reach out to me about. Dogs that are leash reactive may bark at, lunge at, pull towards, etc other dogs and/or people on their walks.
When we work with reactive dogs on their leash skills we want to set them up for success. We want the dog to remain under threshold during the training session so that we can prevent negative behaviors and reward more appropriate ones. These sessions may seem “boring” but that is exactly what we want! A relaxed dog that is able to perform the cues we are asking them to do is going to learn much faster and retain better than a dog that is stressed and uncomfortable.
See Daisy in the video below. When Daisy started a private training program with me a few months ago, she would start barking at other dogs almost as soon as they were visible to her. It was also basically impossible to redirect her towards anything else. With lots of hard work and practice by her mom, Marge, Daisy has come a long way! She is able to calmly look at the other dog in the video and disengage on her own to refocus on Marge. I feel confident that with continued practice things will keep improving for this duo. Way to go ladies! 💪🏻

Training Troubleshooting: Muzzle Training
Muzzle training isn’t something most people think about being necessary for their dogs. As a society we tend to assume that dogs with muzzles on are aggressive and that they are wearing the muzzle to protect others. This certainly can be true, but isn’t always the case. Being aggressive isn’t a personality trait and ANY dog can behave aggressively in different situations, especially situations that are stressful or painful for the dog. All dogs have the potential to bite or behave unpredictably.
I highly recommend desensitization and counterconditioning ALL dogs to wearing a muzzle to prevent future anxiety and to protect our dog as well as other people and animals from the consequences of a bite.

Fun And Games Friday: Retrieving Rover
Not all dogs are natural born retrievers (we are looking at you Labradors), and that is okay! Even if your dog wasn’t born with a fantastic fetch instinct, it is totally teachable if you put in the time and effort! It’s as easy as breaking the behavior down into smaller and more easily digestible steps for your pup. What will your dog consistently do if you throw their favorite toy? Start rewarding for whatever this is, even if it is just watching the toy land on the floor. 😂 Now start rewarding for a little bit more, watching the toy and standing up as it hits the floor. Then taking a step towards the toy. And so on! Happy training!
