Hi, Kimmie here to share some important cold-weather reminders! Winter is in full force, and the next few days could be tough. Stay safe and remember to keep your pets warm and cared for!

🚨Good morning friends—Kimmie is here to report an important winter weather advisory and share a few tips too!

A cold weather advisory is in effect all week—That means we need to be extra careful to protect all animals from the cold. Kimmie heard someone say they saw snow flurries this morning so she wants everyone to be prepared! 🥶

Remember: If you’re cold, they’re cold too!

So here are a few tips to keep pets safe in freezing weather:

Limit outdoor time as much as possible, especially for bathroom breaks. Frostbite can develop quickly on exposed areas like paws, ears, and tails.

Know the Signs of Frostbite & Hypothermia:
•Hypothermia: Shivering, weakness, and lethargy.
•Frostbite: Pale, cold, or gray skin (especially on ears, paws, and tails).
•If you notice these signs, bring your pet inside ASAP and contact the vet.

For the outdoor kitties: If you’re providing outdoor shelter for community cats, always use straw—never towels, blankets, or any cloth material. Fabric can absorb moisture from the air or get wet, freezing overnight and putting the cats at risk of hypothermia.
And don’t forget to check their water bowls regularly to prevent freezing.

Cats also love to search for warm spots, so before starting your car, please check under the hood—they sometimes hide there for warmth! A quick tap on the hood can give them a chance to move along safely.

WE ALSO REMIND EVERYONE, PLEASE DO NOT TRAP ANIMALS IN FREEZING WEATHER!

Trapping animals in extreme cold is both dangerous and illegal. If you see an animal caught in a trap during freezing temperatures, contact Kerr County Animal Services immediately.

And last don’t forget the wildlife;
Wildlife, like birds and squirrels, still need water to drink in the winter. Make sure birdbaths and water sources are kept free of ice so they can stay hydrated.

Consider putting out birdseed, suet cakes, or nuts for squirrels and birds. This can provide a much-needed energy boost during harsh weather.

Let’s keep everyone safe this winter—stay warm and look out for each other!

****ATTENTION KERR COUNTY RESIDENTS****

IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY HEARD, NEXT WEEK IS EXPECTED TO BRING SOME MORE FREEZING TEMPERATURES. THE OVERNIGHT LOWS BETWEEN SATURDAY (1/18/25) AND FRIDAY (1-24-25) ARE PREDICTED TO BE THE 20s AND THE TEENS.

START PREPARING FOR YOUR PETS NOW!!
WITH COLD WEATHER EVENTS SUCH AS THIS, PET OWNERS SHOULD PROVIDE EXTRA CARE FOR THEIR OUTDOOR CATS, DOGS, AND OTHER PETS.

- MAKE SURE TO HAVE PLENTY OF FRESH WATER FOR BOTH YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PETS. PIPES MAY FREEZE, SO PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR PETS WHEN BUYING WATER OR FILLING UP YOUR WATER JUGS.

- BE SURE TO HAVE PLENTY OF FOOD AVAILABLE TO GIVE YOUR PETS. COLDER TEMPERATURES REQUIRE MORE FOOD FOR PETS TO SUSTAIN HEALTHY BODY TEMPERATURES. FOOD = ENERGY = WARMTH

- MAKE A SPACE SOMEWHERE INDOORS WHERE YOU CAN BRING IN YOUR OUTDOOR CATS AND DOGS TO PREVENT HYPOTHERMIA. LENGTHY EXPOSURES TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES LEAD TO LOWER BODY TEMPERATURES WHICH MAY RESULT IN DEATH.

- IF YOU PLAN ON USING HEAT LAMPS, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE DESIGNED FOR THE LOCATION THAT YOU ARE USING THEM IN. NEVER LEAVE PETS UNATTENDED WITH HEAT LAMPS.

- MAKE SURE TO USE STRAW, NOT HAY, FOR YOUR OTHER OUTDOOR PETS (HORSES, GOATS, PIGS, SHEEP, ETC.) DO NOT USE HAY FOR BEDDING AS IT SOAKS UP MOISTURE AND BECOMES A SOGGY MESS THAT CAN HARBOR MOLD AND FREEZE.

- BE SURE TO LIMIT ALL OUTDOOR TIME FOR ALL YOUR PETS TO PREVENT HYPOTHERMIA AND POTENTIAL DEATH!

OPTIMALLY IT WOULD BE BEST FOR OWNERS TO KEEP THEIR DOGS AND CATS INDOORS, BUT SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DO SO. FOR OWNERS THAT DO NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO KEEP THEIR OUTDOOR CATS AND DOGS INDOORS, LOVING TEXAS PET ASSISTANCE HAS GRACIOUSLY DONATED 5 BALES OF STRAW FOR KERR COUNTY RESIDENTS TO USE DURING THIS NEXT COLD FRONT.

STRAW IS AN EXCELENT MATERIAL TO USE IN DOG AND CAT HOUSES, AS IT HELPS KEEP THE ANIMALS WARM AND DOES NOT ABSORB MOISTURE LIKE HAY OR BLANKETS WILL. DO NOT USE HAY OR BLANKETS AS BEDDING IN OUTDOOR SETTINGS BECAUSE THEY WILL ABSORB MOISTURE AND THEY CAN FREEZE AND ICE OVER IN LOW TEMPERATURES CAUSING THE PET TO ALSO FREEZE AND POTENTIALLY ICE OVER.
HAY IS FOR EATING - STRAW IS FOR SLEEPING!!

ALL KERR COUNTY RESIDENTS IN NEED OF STRAW FOR THEIR OUTDOOR PETS ARE WELCOME TO COME BY OUR FACILITY (KERR COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES / 3600 LOOP 534, KERRVILLE) TO GRAB SOME FOR YOUR PETS (WHILE SUPPLIES LAST). PLEASE TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED, SO OTHERS IN NEED MAY ALSO HAVE A CHANCE TO PROTECT THEIR PETS. OUR GATES WILL BE OPEN UNTIL 5:00 PM TODAY AND WE WILL SET THE STRAW OUTSIDE OF OUR GATES THIS EVENING, AS WE ARE CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND AND MONDAY HOLIDAY (1-20-25).

AS A REMINDER….

TX Penal Code 42.092 requires ALL owners to provide necessary food, water, and SHELTER to the extent required to maintain the animal in a state of good health

TX Penal Code 42.092 defines “torture” as any act that causes unjustifiable pain or suffering

Charlie and I want to give a shout out to the Freeman Fritz Animal Shelter in Kerrville, Texas for his care and meds today. They generously wrote off the entire invoice and gave me meds to bring home for him.
He needed a chest X-RAY and they unfortunately, do not have one. Anyone caring to donate a little to this Shelter I'm sure it will be appreciated. Also sharing this post to get the word around.
These people cared enough about me and my animal to care for him above money. All the other vets , I didn't call ALL but quite a few, cared more about the $$.
We're back home, my baby is settled back down from his "tramatic" afternoon.

It’s Kimmie here, bringing you the latest from Kimmie’s Korner.

Today, I want to talk about a purr-fect opportunity to welcome a barn cat (or two) into your life. Currently, we collaborate with Kerr County Animal Services to help place socially challenged kitties, into working cat homes. These are cats that truly have no other option but death. These impounded cats are not available for public adoption and this is their only chance at a better life.

However, times are changing and we need your help more than ever!! In years past, we had an excellent working relationship with an outside organization that had a thriving Barn Cat Program. They accepted our fully vetted, socially awkward cats, into that program. Hundreds of lives have been saved over the years!

Sadly, we received notice last week that they may focusing their efforts on other communities and may not be able to help as much. We were devastated!!!

If we want to continue this positive life saving trend, it’s now imperative that we establish a program of our own!

Barn cats are natural hunters, adept at keeping pesky rodents like mice and rats (and even snakes) at bay.

This makes them a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to chemical pest control methods.

Plus, they’re low-maintenance companions, requiring minimal attention—ideal for those seeking a furry friend without the demands of a high-maintenance pet.

Beyond their pest control prowess, these working cats offer companionship, bringing comfort and a sense of security to those around them. Their presence can promote relaxation and help alleviate stress.

For families, adopting a barn cat provides an educational experience, teaching both children and adults about animal behavior and care.

By choosing to adopt one of these cats, you’re giving a second chance to an animal in need. Their life literally depends on it!

All our barn cats are fully vetted: vaccinated, spayed or neutered, ear-tipped, microchipped, and treated with Bravecto before joining our barn cat program.

To adopt, you’ll need to provide shelter, food, water, and necessary veterinary care.

Suitable shelters include barns, outbuildings, factories, and warehouses.

We offer relocation setups and guidance throughout the entire process, partnering with you to ensure a smooth transition for your new feline friends (we usually recommend adopting in pairs).

If you’re interested in adopting a barn cat, please reach out to us at AWS Freeman-Fritts Animal Shelter & Clinic by calling 830-257-4144.

Let’s work together to find these wonderful cats the homes they deserve!

💫Saving lives through rescue, adoption, outreach, and education!
