YAY Margaux

YAY Margaux Margaux was a standard poodle who became critically ill at eight. Her can-do attitude has inspired people from all corners of the globe to say YAY Margaux!

In August of 2016, our Poodle Margaux had both eyes removed, and we learned that her hearing was gone. We didn’t know what to do at first. She’s 12 and has had a great life. But my wife and I decided she deserved a chance to continue on so long as she had some quality of life, which we decided was possible. We realized this would take a lot of work. Margaux is a Standard Poodle born in 2004. She r

ecently became blind and deaf due to an autoimmune disease she’s battled for the last 3 years. Her nickname has become “The Awesome and Amazing Margaux” thanks to her inspiring nature and persistent attitude to learn something new every day. She loves to dance to Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke” (even though she can’t hear it) and loves going on hikes with the Jordan family. You can follow her progress learning how she has learned to adapt to being blind and deaf. I am documenting her story here “Root for Poodle Margaux” so you can follow her progress. She is truly awesome and amazing, and that’s why we call her that! She takes everything life gives her, in the darkness and silence, and says “Is that all you got? I can handle this. I just need a little help.” And she does it with this HUGE smile on her face at all times. She is inspiring me and causing me to slow down a bit and dedicate myself to her needs. For those of you with kids, you will understand this. My wife Laura and I don’t have kids but our 4 poodles, Chloe, Margaux, Susie, and Rhonda!, are our children.

A great memory of Laura and Margaux from December of 2006.

I am sorry. I owe you an explanation regarding Rhonda‘s health. Frankly, things were very bad for a period of time.

In mid February, we noticed that Rhonda could not hold her tail up. We didn’t think much of it until shortly thereafter she had problems going to the bathroom and had some blood in her stool.

The x-ray showed nothing.

They didn’t know what to do. They suggested we got a CAT scan and shown below is the result of the CAT scan.

Basically, the area in yellow is a tumor in her sacrum. It’s about the size of my fist made into a ball; the tumor was in location that they could not biopsy it so we didn’t know if it was cancerous or not.

We just knew it was huge and growing.

We were told she had little time and it would likely be a very painful death would lead to hurt slowly, losing control of her legs and ability to go to the bathroom.

It was excruciating.

It is truly a miracle that she is with us today. We brought her to Colorado State University veterinarian hospital in Fort Collins in the Ferrari of course. It was a 14 Hour Dr. that I did in two separate days.

We went through intensive radiation therapy for one week and brought her home with the hope that we had contained the tumor and stopped it from growing.

The biggest concern was that they would somehow reduce the size of the tumor which was now providing structure for her sacrum and without it would die in a similar fashion. We were told this would likely buy us about three months.

That was in March. Within two weeks after coming back from her radiation treatment, she got noticeably better almost to the point of being practically normal.

We then spent the month of April in St. George Utah and she hiked everywhere and was freaking awesome. She even avoided the rattlesnakes that scared the s**t out of me.

In any event, we thought we were in the clear until when we got back about a month or so ago, she had problems with her rear leg. We have no idea what caused it other than Sabrina knocked into her.

Well, for the past month, we’ve been scratching our head trying to figure out and magically she seems to have gotten much better. It varies from day today, but she seems to be doing great for now.

Taking every day one day at a time trying to maximize all moments.

So that’s the Rhonda story. There’s a lot more to it and I have a lot of great videos and pictures from our adventures that someday perhaps I will share with you.

Sorry about over posting today.

Life is just so good that I wanted to share with you. More later.

Yay Rhonda.

To be clear, Rhonda is very sick, but she doesn’t show it much like Margaux and Chloe and even Susie.

We are contemplating another puppy, but don’t think that is a good time.

En route home now and reflecting on the epicness of the trip. The river cruise was spectacular, although due to high waters, we were stuck in Austria for the entire trip, which wasn't so bad. Met a lot of great people, including Jaymie Klauber and her mom, Nancy. Felt like traveling with family.

My strange man, David Anson, was an exceptional traveler. He was up for anything, so we did everything, truly. We were constantly going and doing, without much rest, which is precisely how I love to travel.

While it is hard to select a favorite moment, since there were so many, I think the drives around the alps were the highlight. We did that for the last 6 days. Each day, we'd agree generally on the route for the next day, then go to sleep, only to wake up and change the route completely after talking with the hotel owners. We made lasting relationships as a result. ALL the hotels and restaurants were family owned, many for generations. It was nice to avoid chains like in the USA. They were truly appreciative of our business, and our personalities. We tried hard not to be the ugly Americans, and believe we succeeded in spades.

It was interesting being back on Facebook. I have truly enjoyed my hiatus, and likely will continue it when I am back home, although I could possibly see a way to post something infrequently, or at least much less than I used to do. Let's face it, I had a real problem. I have found that living life is much more enjoyable than reporting life to all of you.

I have enjoyed all the relationships made on Facebook, and miss you all, but living in the moment is much more enjoyable. The good news is that I have been recording my life as before, just not posting in real time like before. I hope to find an editor to help me figure out how to post more refined videos and images, although I hope to upload the poodle welcoming.

On that front, I am sorry to report that Rhonda is very ill. In March, we discovered a very large tumor in her sacrum. I drover her in YAAAAAY to Fort Collins for Colorado State University to get special radiation treatment which shrunk the tumor and extended her life, by how much, we don't know. She seems ok for the time being, although we know her time on this earth is not terribly long, so we are trying to maximize it. It is very sad, but she is super happy, and we don't think in pain, although recently she lost use of her hind leg, for reasons unknown. I would share her journey with you as usual, but candidly, it is too hard this time around. I hope you understand. I promise to report back when there are significant events, but the days of live-streaming her every moment are in the past.

Well, that's enough for now. I will try to update you more later, but trust me, the fun and adventures have continued, without you, and someday I will share them in a much more consumable format. Frankly, my travels this past year have been better than ever.

So, stay tuned. I am living life to the fullest, and doing it EAR2EAR, which just happens to be the license plate of my new Apple Green 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider, which I purchased on Bring A Trailer and drove home from Vancouver, B.C. taking the most circuitous route imaginable, recording most of the journey in 8k video, 360 like the snippet below from my recent trip.

I'm outta here.

Scott - thanks for your interest in my life and adventures.
