We are happy to share that our co-founder, Dr. Sohaila Maleki, will be writing a monthly column for the Idaho Mountain Express called The Pet Perspective.

This column will explore the science, heart, and art of pet care in a way that feels clear and easy to understand. Dr. Maleki will cover topics that matter to pet families in our community, including preventive care, emotional wellbeing, aging pets, and how to be a collaborative partner in your pet’s care.

Each month, she will share what she has learned through years of private practice and her lifelong work of advocating for pets and the people who care for them. We hope it offers a grounded, practical perspective in the busy world of veterinary care.

Keep an eye out for The Pet Perspective here each month. If there is a topic you would love to see covered, let us know.

Our phone provider has confirmed it’s a known outage caused by a hardware issue. They’re already working on the repair, and service should be restored within the next hour or two.

Thank you for your patience while we wait for the fix — our team is still here and ready to help however we can! 💚

🌿 The Art of Adaptation 🌿

Dr. Cleveland had the honor of caring for this brilliantly colored panther chameleon, a patient who proves that nature really does know best. 🌈✨

Those dazzling shifts in color aren’t just for fun: they’re how chameleons communicate, regulate body temperature, and blend into their environment. Pretty amazing, right? 🌿🦎

From chameleons to tortoises, dogs to cats — every patient has something to teach us. 💚

Just in case you needed a little LOVE today… here’s Ernie and his six toes, rolling his way right into your heart. 🐾💚

Fun fact: a cat’s purr vibrates between 25–150 Hz — frequencies that research suggests can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even promote healing. 🔊Turn Volume UP 🔊

Ernie would say: science or not, purring just makes the world a little bit softer. 💚

🌿 One Year Later 🌿

One year ago, just days after our annual staff retreat, our world at Habitat shifted. Dr. Baker had a stroke — and our path forward was suddenly filled with uncertainty, challenge, and change.

We were tested, but we didn’t break down. Instead, we chose connection and community. We came together in ways we never imagined. We stretched. We scrambled. We supported one another. We learned what it means to truly be a team...rising to the moment, day after day, even when it wasn’t easy.

, , and their daughter have shown us what strength and courage look like. And our team? They come in as a strong second! That’s why this year’s Habitat Annual Retreat was especially meaningful. To relax in the mountains together and celebrate the incredible progress Dr. Baker has made was a blessing. Having him there reminded us of how far we’ve come and how strong we are when we stick together. 💚

To our clients, we are so grateful for your patience, your support, and your kindness over the last year — especially on the days that weren’t as smooth as usual. Your compassion made all the difference.

Thank you for being part of the Habitat community. We’re so lucky to have you. 🌿

🐾 Meet Rachel Germundson, CVT!

Originally from Portland, Oregon, Rachel's deep connection with animals started early. That passion turned into purpose when she chose a career in veterinary medicine—one where she could make a difference every day.

Now part of our Habitat Ketchum team, Rachel brings a quiet strength and a gentle heart to her work. She has a special gift for comforting nervous or sensitive cats, helping them feel safe, seen, and cared for.

Since moving to the Wood River Valley, Rachel has found her happy place—surrounded by nature, community, and four-legged friends. Outside of work, she’s usually riding her horse, Bitty, or adventuring on the trails with her dog, Hank.
