Winston turns 6 today! If you’ve had private lessons with us, chances are you’ve seen him before! He helps all of our fearful clients gain confidence, shows the reactive dogs how to be neutral, and much more. Winston is one of the many dogs that have made me the dog trainer I am today. Happy birthday Winnie🥳❤️

Why we DON'T visit dog parks...

Choosing not to visit dog parks can be a wise decision for the safety and well-being of your beloved dog. Dog parks may seem like a fun place to socialize, but they can also pose risks such as potential aggression, disease transmission, and lack of supervision. Further down the line this can cause issues in your dog such as frustration, reactivity and even aggression.

Instead, opt for controlled playdates with known dogs or explore alternative activities that promote both exercise and socialization in a safer environment.

We recommend a service called "SniffSpot" which creates a safe, welcoming space on someone's property for your dog to run freely and play!

Greeting a dog the right way is key to a positive interaction. Approach calmly, let the dog come to you, avoid direct eye contact, and speak to the owner; not the dog!

Let the dog approach you and create the interaction they would like, which could mean no interaction at all!

Always respect their boundaries, and remember, not all dogs are equally sociable, so be mindful and considerate in your approach. A respectful greeting sets the stage for a happy encounter for both you and the dog!

✅ DO:
• Get on their level
• Turn sideways to the dog
• Let the dog approach you

❌ DON’T
• Shove your hand in their face
• Tower over the dog
• Make direct eye contact

Puppies are like sponges, eagerly absorbing the world around them. That's why puppy socialization is a crucial aspect of their development. It's not just about playdates and making cute memories (although those are important too!), but rather a foundational step in creating a confident, well-behaved, and emotionally balanced adult dog.

👦🏼 Early Exposure to People: Expose your pup to a variety of people, young and old. This helps them learn that the world is full of friendly faces and builds their confidence.

🐕 Other Dogs: Encourage positive interactions with other dogs that you trust (not dog parks). This teaches them valuable social skills, like how to communicate and play appropriately.

🏡 Environmental Exploration: Introduce your pup to different environments, from urban streets to rural trails. This broadens their comfort zone and reduces fear of new places.

🚗 Car Rides: Take your puppy on car rides to help them get used to traveling. This can prevent car anxiety in the future.

🛁 Grooming and Handling: Make grooming a positive experience. Regularly handle your pup's paws, ears, and body to make vet visits and grooming less stressful.

💡Novel Experiences: Introduce your puppy to new sights, sounds, and objects. This teaches them to adapt to change and not be fearful.

⭐ Positive Interactions: Reward your puppy for good behavior. Use treats and praise to encourage them to repeat desired actions.

👁️‍🗨️ Obedience Training: Start basic obedience training early to establish good manners and a strong bond between you and your pup.

Remember, the critical socialization window typically ends around 16 weeks of age, so start early. Always prioritize safety, and ensure that interactions are positive and gentle. A well-socialized puppy is more likely to grow into a well-adjusted, happy adult dog.
