Tuesday’s tip in the spirit of the holiday season: Should your dog open their own Christmas presents? This article explores the benefits and risks. My favorite benefit is that opening presents serves as a canine enrichment activity! Every day will feel like Christmas at Tails & Trails, as we offer enrichment-based daycare and boarding adventures for pets.

Ripping wrapping paper can be excellent canine enrichment: an activity that allows your pup to express their natural instincts! Here's how to decide if you should let your dog open their own holiday gifts this year.

Tuesday's tip is back! We are officially in winter, and while this season can be tough on our hands, it’s equally harsh on our dogs' paws. This week’s tip is about understanding dog paw sensitivity during winter. Here’s the cold truth.
Dry air alone can lead to chapped, painful paw pads. Add in the snow, and you get a whole other set of issues. Dogs walking on snow-covered surfaces might step on hidden sharp objects or debris that can hurt their paws. But those are not the only reasons you should take care of your dog’s paws. Heavily salted or chemically treated areas may result in burns on paw pads. Dogs might also try to lick or chew their paws and accidentally ingest the toxic substances in salt or deicers. It’s important to regularly check your dog’s paws for signs that indicate paw discomfort. Watch for limping, excessive licking and cracked pads. Some protective measures are dog booties, paw waxes and balms and trimming the hair between their paw pads. Winterproof your dogs' paws and winter will feel like a walk in the park! ☃️

Santa arrived early at Tails & Trails, bringing enrichment games for your furry friend.
Why will Tails & Trails be based on enrichment? Here are a few science-backed reasons why.
Enrichment mimics natural behaviors such as foraging, exploring, and problem-solving. It taps into a dog's innate instincts to keep them engaged and stimulated but not overstimulated. Enrichment builds confidence, reduces stress, and fosters trust with humans.
During a day at daycare, your dog will engage in enrichment activities alongside their friends in a group setting, ensuring there is a suitable dog-to-human ratio. One-on-one enrichment sessions with a trusted, enrichment-trained staff member are also available. Furthermore, you can include enrichment options during your dog's boarding stay!

This week’s Tuesday tip addresses a common fear for dog owners: getting sprayed by a skunk. 🦨 If this happens, it's important to know that you should not wash your dog with water. Instead, follow these steps to effectively de-skunk your dog:
1. Mix hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap in a large bowl. Stir the mixture until the baking soda is completely dissolved.
2. Use a spray bottle or sponge to generously apply the mixture to your dog’s fur.
3. Allow the solution to soak on your dog for approximately 5 minutes.
4. After the time has passed, thoroughly rinse the mixture from your dog’s fur and skin. Alternatively, you can use commercial de-skunking products.
Tails and Trails groomers will offer de-skunking products and can help de-skunk your dog after you’ve done the initial treatment. Additionally, Tails and Trails will have a 24/7 dog wash available if we are closed.

🚨All this grooming talk brings me to this week’s Tuesday Tip: How often should you groom your dog? Here is what the professionals recommend.
🪮 You should brush your dog one time a week to remove dirt, debris and dead hair, reduce shedding, and stimulate oil production to keep the dog's coat healthy.
🛁Bathing. Bathing is something that dog owners do far too much. You should bathe your dog once every 3-6 months. Overbathing your dog can deplete oils and cause them to feel itchy and uncomfortable.
✂️Haircuts completely depend on the breed and your preference.
🪥Your dog’s teeth should be brushed daily or at least three times per week. This will prevent plaque buildup which contributes to bad breath and poor health.
😒 Ugh! Cutting your dog’s nails is the worst! Thankfully, most dogs do not need their nails trimmed too often since regular walking on asphalt helps to keep nails at a healthy length. On average, a dog will need nails trimmed once every 3-8 weeks.
👂It is good to know, for most dogs, ear cleaning is not a necessary process. Dog’s ears have a way of maintaining health and introducing any foreign cleaners into the ears can disturb this natural balance.
