In Memory of Dolly Parton: A Beautiful Legacy for the Avian World

Parrot Trust Scotland deeply mourns the passing of Dolly Parton, a beloved global icon whose boundless compassion for feathered creatures matched the brilliance of her musical legacy.

While the world celebrates her as the queen of country music, our charity remembers Dolly as a fierce champion for birds - and most notably, for her profound love of parrots. Dolly was captivated by their bright plumage, high intelligence, and expressive, social nature. She adored these magnificent birds, seeing in their vivid colours and talkative spirits a beautiful reflection of her own larger-than-life personality, love for vocal expression, and flamboyant flair. Whether admiring exotic species or supporting sanctuary spaces, Dolly consistently championed the welfare of companion parrots and the protection of their wild counterparts.

Dolly never forgot her roots as the self-described "Smoky Mountain Songbird," a moniker that bridged her mountain heritage with her lifelong kinship to the avian world. Her childhood nurtured a deep bond with nature, inspiring her to use her immense success to give back to animal welfare and conservation causes worldwide. She understood that parrots are complex, highly intelligent animals that require specialised care, devotion, and love - the very values that drive our rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming work across Scotland.

Her legacy of giving also extended deep into our own Scottish communities. Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which actively provides free books to thousands of children across Scotland, she inspired the next generation to learn about the world around them, fostering a lifelong empathy for nature and all living things.

Dolly Parton will be remembered for the warmth she shared with every living creature. Her music will continue to play, her stories will continue to be told, and her kindness will forever inspire protection, rescue, and care for the beautiful parrot lives she held so close to her heart.

And while we might be a little biased, here are just a few reasons why we love parrots:

• Found across the world in a huge range of ecosystems
• Complex and fascinating social bonds
• Over 400 species, from budgies to kākāpō

They’re also important indicators of ecosystem health, so when parrots are in trouble, it’s often a sign that entire ecosystems are too.

But despite all the reasons we love them, parrots are among the most threatened birds on Earth, with nearly one in three species at risk. Protecting parrots isn’t just about saving one group of birds, it’s about protecting the natural world they help sustain.
