A massive congratulations are in order for LSF student Stella and our own bay beauty, Charm! They tackled both of their first shows EVER, together, and had a fabulous time doing it!

Proud is an understatement, one, because Charm and Stella are a fairly new partnership, but more so because they both rose to the occasion, and really put all the skills they've been learning to use today!! Having students who enjoy the journey and are eager to do the work makes my heart so incredibly happy!

Thank you to the DRPC for putting on a show that's both safe and fun. It's a valuable one for our area!

We need additional weekend stall cleaning/setup help!

The work typically takes about 3 hours, generally stalls are fairly neat, and we have a very efficient setup to make the job easier!

We pay a day rate, and are happy to offer perks such as riding lessons or riding time. Please message us or Tanya Moths directly if interested!

We are always complimented on how calm, quiet, and HAPPY the horses are here at Lone Star Farm, and this is why!

They spend most of their time outside in actual fields, with a group of friends... they eat, play, socialize, and rest together.

Yes, we have stalls and use them nightly, but they're set up and organized to keep pasture mates together and allow for socializing if the horses choose.

We have a little bit of room here in paradise, if you're looking for lessons or training in addition to wonderful horse-first care!

Send us a message if you're interested!

“I can’t find any good places to board where they put horses first-“

This is a huge problem. In just about every consult I have where we are seeking a solution for a behavior problem, i ask about husbandry and we almost always find a major problem there. Not to blame the owner- often it is near impossible to find a good place to board where horses get the kind of care they need

To me, it’s non negotiable that horses live outside, in herds, with forage. Yes they’ll be dirty, be in the elements, and interact with horses. This is what they were perfectly designed for -

But I’d like to offer you some perspective from someone who has cared for other people’s horses for fifteen years in some capacity -

For the entire time I’ve been caring for horses where I’m in charge and able to make these choices for their needs and putting them first, I have-

-had clients pull their horses out of training when the first superficial scratch happens (I have had people cuss me out as they load their horse in tears with one very small scratch on their coats from socializing )

-fielded texts from worry stricken owners at ten pm, midnight, 3 am, 5 am, you get the idea… panicking over a light rain, a minor drop in temps, a little heat, some bugs etc. You never get to be “off duty” because at any hour someone’s concern over their horses minor discomfort means your great discomfort

-play musical pastures trying to placate every owner so they can all have the ideal pasture set up (for their desires, not the horses) and just about p**s off everyone in the barn

-had clients livid I didn’t put the horses in stalls for every minor weather event

-had plenty of drama between owners over who’s horse they don’t like for “bullying” their horse in the pasture when it’s usually simply herd dynamics at work

You get the idea. I’m sure every boarding barn owner can back me up on this

I’ve had excellent clients so this is in no way generalizing ALL of them. The excellent ones took me forever to find and I will seriously miss them, but - But the ones I’ve had that were a headache were a SERIOUS headache, the kind that can make you miserable living in your own home.

When I worked at other barns and we had all horses in stalls or in private, tiny paddocks I had barely a husbandry related complaint (plenty about behavior though). Everyone was happy to have their horses “tucked in safely.”

So my point is - doing it right for the horse is not profitable, a huge pain in the rear and a ton of stress (hope you love texts at 3 am), and a giant liability.

I don’t agree with keeping horses separate or confined but I totally get it from a business perspective

So what’s the solution?

We live in a worry stricken, obsessive, results driven, and very litigious society. We’re losing land quickly , losing touch with animal sense, and good places are just harder to come by every day. Everyone is pressed from all angles and there’s no clear villain or hero here -

I think everybody could get a little chiller, personally. But maybe we’re looking at a total societal overhaul. Again, one of those things I don’t see a simple solution for.

We couldn't have said it any better! 💙🥰

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

With summer in full swing, we wanted to share a quick hot weather training safety reminder!

🔥 How HOT is too hot?!🔥
Check out this handy chart to determine whether it's too hot to ride safely.
🚒🧯👨‍🚒📛
🥵 Keep in mind that older animals will have a lower tolerance to heat
💧 Make sure your horses have fresh water and a place to catch a breeze or get shade.
🚿 Give them a rinse with the hose to cool them off and help the sweat evaporation process
🍉 Cold treats like apple dunking in the water trough, and watermelon can be a fun way to get horses to take additional fluids. Double check that whatever you choose is safe for horses!

You could ride anywhere... so why ride with LSF?

We don't have "traditional" school horses.

We have incredibly kind, smart, willing, SAFE show quality horses for you to learn on! Learning on a horse who will patiently wait for you to "get it right" instead of allowing riders to simply be a passenger, is so valuable, and, in our opinion, makes for more skilled riders!

If you happen to fall in love, we do offer these same superstar teachers for lease and occasionally for sale to the right match!

Whether you bring your own horse or use one of ours, we offer the same high-quality instruction and training. Our focus is on the dressage scale and rider biomechanics, creating happy, healthy horses and quiet, kind, correct riders!

We would love for you to join us! Message today to find out how we can help you reach your goals!

One of the consistent compliments we hear is how quiet and good-natured the horses we work with become!

We make sure we don't scare horses on purpose, but we also don't keep them in a bubble and shield them from things they might not like. The horses here see it all, tractors, farm equipment, dogs, kids, cows, water, natural obstacles, and even traffic... it makes them well-rounded citizens and helps us teach them how to safely handle new things they're not quite sure of!

If you didn't know, we work with horses destined to do western riding also! Send us a message if we can help get your horse better broke for you, too!

What a fabulous morning with these ladies! They used all of the skills we've been reviewing to play with riding jump courses, and got to see 4 very different types of horse do the same job. We had a very forward, eager jumper, a steady veteran, a green but willing youngster, and a very quiet but on the lazy side young horse. We finished off with some fun in the water too!
Riding in a group can be SO educational if you choose to pay attention to each rider and how they need to do things vs how you do, especially if you ask questions! These four did a great job, and I'm excited to see the progress continue!

How fun it is to have a student so excited to learn! Rebecca and her gorgeous boy Zeppelin are enjoying some training and lessons to make their summer more fun!

Zeppelin is learning to be softer through his body while also learning to be a "self going horse." If you've ever ridden a self going horse you know, it's just lovely! No need to nag for every step, or repeat yourself a bunch of times before your horse reacts!

Because Zep is starting to respond to the lightest aids, Rebecca gets to work on herself and become a quiet, soft, easy to carry rider, which we all want to be!

I just love this work, and seeing partnerships flourish is truly so rewarding! 😍

How cold is TOO cold for riding?

Studies have shown that working in temperatures under 20 degrees F° (wtc) can have lower respiratory immunological effects for up to 48 hours after exercise!
If you MUST ride in temps below 20°, Our advice is this:
Gently and gradually warm up, 15 minutes of walk at LEAST, then keep the ride short and focus on the basics. Take your time cooling down (including drying off!), check and be aware of the footing if you’re riding outside so that your horse doesn’t slip or isnt working on super hard uneven ground, and respect your horse’s current fitness level. Meaning don't make them run around or pull you on a sled if they've been doing very little work lately!

We like to enjoy gradually built, long slow walks in the winter,, it builds fitness, gets you both some fresh air and the endorphins flowing! Building your base of fitness at the walk in winter let's you get going sooner come spring!
Need help making a safe winter riding plan? Send us a message!

We had a fabulous evening celebrating the holidays with our barn family and lovely horses last night! Too much food, great company, and lots of fun was had! The horses painted for their people in exchange for bribes, all the canvases turned out amazing! We feel incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful group of people and horses gracing the aisles of our barn these days!
