Did you know that dogs learn through repetition? Cause and effect?

When you repeat something over and over again, the same way every time, they learn to repeat a behavior in order to gain what it is they want. So, if every time your dog sits you toss them a treat, they will learn that sitting = treat and will do it again and again as long as the result is the same.
“Because I did this, I got the result I wanted (treat, toy, etc), therefore I will repeat that.”

In order to get a dog to NOT repeat a behavior you give them a result from a behavior that they don’t want (punishment) and again, the result must always be the same every time they perform that wrong behavior.
“Because I did this, I got something I didn’t want, therefore I will not be repeating that.”
Using this very simple method, you can get your dog to do ANYTHING. Amazing, right?

Probably one of the most useful things you can teach your dog since it is a foundational exercise to teaching a ton of other commands.
.
So here’s a free tip on getting your dog started on the right paw with luring - practice having your dog PUSH into your hand! Once you feel any slight pressure towards your hand, use your marker (click or yes), and then release the food from under your thumb. (Timing these steps correctly is VERY important)

Rules of tug:
Control, Engagement, FUN!
.
First and foremost, it is crucial that you have control of your dog during play. That means starting and ending g the game on command, being able to tell the dog when to let go and when to perform other commands in order to keep the game in control. This makes it so that it is not only fun for your dog but fun for the handler as well!
.
Next, your dog must be actively engaged with you during play. No checking out, when the tug is not in the handlers hands, the dog must be actively trying to re engage with the handler by bringing the tug back (no chewing on it somewhere else).
.
Last but definitely not least tug needs to be FUN! The handler should be making themselves exciting! Thats what dogs want and need in active tug play. The above aspects make it fun for you, but it’s your job to make it fun for the dog! Don’t be boring!
