Established in 1965, the Animal Welfare League (AWL) of the Northern Neck has been tirelessly committed to promoting the humane treatment of animals and preventing animal cruelty in Lancaster, Northumberland, Westmoreland, and Richmond Counties in Virginia. As a non-profit organization, we take immense pride in being an all-vol

unteer driven force dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. At AWL, we believe that every furry friend deserves a chance at a better life. We operate independently, not affiliated with any shelters, and do not receive funding from county or state governments. Instead, we rely on the unwavering support of compassionate donors, generous grants, and the funds raised through our very own Thrift Shop in Kilmarnock, VA. We strive to prevent animal cruelty and provide education on responsible pet ownership to the community. Our dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly to deliver veterinary care, spay/neuter services, and facilitate loving adoptions, ensuring each animal finds their forever home. We're honored to have earned Candid's Platinum Seal of Transparency, a recognition of our unwavering commitment to being open and accountable in our operations. Our transparency speaks to our dedication to our cause and our supporters. At AWL, we envision a humane community where animals are respected and treated with compassion. The 4th of July is fun for us—but frightening for pets. Help your animals stay calm and safe with these quick tips from AWL:

1️⃣ Keep pets indoors – Loud booms can cause panic. A quiet, secure room is best.
2️⃣ Create a safe space – Add cozy bedding, toys, and calming music.
3️⃣ Check ID tags & microchips – Make sure your pet can be identified if they run.
4️⃣ Skip the fireworks shows – They’re no place for pets, no matter how well-behaved.
5️⃣ Talk to your vet – Ask about calming options if your pet gets anxious.

Gizmo is a handsome 7 month old Australian Shepherd / Bernese Mountain Dog mix who's ready to find his forever home! He is incredibly intelligent and eager to learn, making him a joy to train.
This clever boy would thrive with an active owner who is dedicated to continuing his training and giving him plenty of mental and physical exercise. He'd also excel if given a "job" to do, which could be anything from advanced obedience to agility, or working around the farm with proper training.
Gizmo is already neutered, microchipped and has all his shots, so he's all set to go home with you and embark on some fantastic summer adventures!
His adoption fee is $175.
