Great Pyrenees!
I absolutely adore these dogs, but sadly, cringe when I see them on my schedule.
When their coat is out of control it is an absolute nightmare and unfortunately this is the time I usually get to see them.
IF you have a Great Pyrenees, it IS possible to keep them maintained with a little effort ( maybe an hour a week, but more is better) and 3-4 trips to your groomer a year.
They are sweet, loving & gentle creatures who deserve love too. They will be protectors of your flock even if you love on them.
I often hear that if you love them they won’t do their job. GARBAGE! Do not fall for that!
You CAN pat them and love on them and they will still be protectors. I believe without love their spirit is broken and confidence gone.
BACK TO MAINTENANCE ~ the reason for this post.
I often have to shave the Great Pyrenees that walk through the door of my shop because I do not want to torture the dogs that visit me.
Their coats are their protection from ALL weather. Cold and believe it or not, the heat as well.
The undercoat is the insulation like the insulation you have in the walls of your home.
They don’t sweat, so there is no way for them to cool themselves other than to lie on the tiles of the floor or to find a mud hole to lie in.
This way the coolness of whatever they lie on
is transferred to the main arteries that cools their blood and cools their bodies.
This goes for every double coated dog.
YOUR JOB is to maintain their coat so it functions properly so it can do its job.
When the coat gets matted it loses its ability to do its job and can cause skin issues, hide injuries and cause a myriad of other problems thus affecting your pocketbook and emotions.
Twice a year they will blow their coat & more than likely your mind as well, when you see the mounds of hair they blow!
Brush them! This will help them & you.
I will be happy to show you how!
An hour a week will keep their coat in working condition and the good news is, if the coat is working properly, their hair will repell dirt and you won’t have a giant mud ball roaming around.
You will be able to brush it out with little effort when they do find that mud hole.
A metal comb & long bristle slicker brush is really all you need on your end with a few trips to your groomer during the year.
Love your Great Pyrenees ~ they will love you back and be the most loyal friend you ever had.
That is all!

PUPPIES AND GROOMING

So you have a new puppy! She is so cute, fluffy and adorable 🥰
If she is a longhaired breed, She needs regular grooming.
“ i bathe her at home” you say?
If you are not brushing/combing her tangles out before your bath, you are creating matts.
If you are only brushing the top hair, you are missing the tangles close to the skin.
If you are the only person to handle her, she will most likely be terrified when you bring her in to be groomed and the grooming will not be a pleasant experience.
If she is white, her skin is more sensitive than a dark haired dog.
As a groomer I can’t stand to see matted babies.
De matting can be painful and the last thing I want to do is ruin your babies grooming experience.
Have your babies groomed EARLY and once a month for 3 months before they are 6 months old.
This way they become accustomed to being handled by someone other than you, and more than likely won’t have to be shaved when you do bring them in.
They are living breathing little beings, not dolls.
It is my job to take care of them the best way I can and sometimes, if they haven’t been properly groomed it may mean that they come back to you naked.
Invest in a metal comb. If you can’t get a comb through their hair, they are matted.
Don’t blame your groomer who was thinking of your puppies welfare.
Humanity over vanity.
